My first dog Bear (female chow x) was named by some homeless people she was living with before she hopped into her rescuer's car. When we started fostering her, I was going to change it, because Bear was "such a boy dog's name..." We never did change it, in 10 years. She wasn't the girly-dog sort anyway.
Penny came named, also. Her rescuers named her that because she has tan points, and the tan is close to a penny's color. It was a perfectly fitting name for her. Plus, then I get to be a big dork and lift her up saying, "Find a Penny, pick it up, and all the day you'll have good luck."
