Anyone see this show?

http://www.showbuzz.cbsnews.com/sto...89.shtml?source=RSSattr=Entertainment_3676889

I only saw the new episode because it was a free download onto my iPod from iTunes and I wanted to test video's with it.

But I watched the first episode. I must say, though I like the overall idea of self-confidence and a higher self-esteem and comfort level with your body, some of the things they said I just was shocked at.

Basically they said being overweight like she was was her "natural body weight." I'm sorry but I disagree. Or that that's what a "real" woman looks like. Um, .....No. Sorry, again I must disagree. Being overweight doesn't make you a real woman, just like being underweight doesn't make you a real women.

Too many comments like that made me really not like that show, but again, I agree with the overall aim.

what do you think?

How to look good naked...?????

I'm with you. Promoting obesity as healthy and normal is as much of a no-no for me as condemning people for it.

BB... was the woman featured very overweight or something like 20lbs? That would make a big difference in my interpretation.

I'm not a good judge of weight, but I'd say around 30 lbs overweight or so. Her back had a few roles to it if that helps? She wasn't severely severely overweight, but she was more than just a little overweight.

That is the first I've seen of that show... hm. It's great to love your body and such - but that doesn't mean that you shouldn't be at a healthy weight IMO. We have a show here that helps men & women accept their looks, but also shows them a healthier life style so that they can have a healthy weight.

I don't think they are saying that it's healthy to be overweight. I think the main focus of the goal is to build self esteem. If you've never been significantly over weight you probably don't know just how severely damaged your self esteem is. I've struggled with weight for most of my life. And it's hard when you see yourself in the mirror or in pictures and you just cringe. My poor self esteem had had such a negative impact on my life that I've missed out on a lot. And it definately contributed to my phobia of the GYN doctors.

I haven't seen the show or even heard about it. But from what's been described just sounds like they are trying to be the stepping stone in changing people's lives by teaching them how to love themselves no matter what weight they are. Once you can love yourself and have a decent self esteem the whole losing weight thing probably falls into place. I would imagine once you feel good about yourself you would then want to look good and take the steps necessary to do so. That's just my opinion. I think they may be onto something good with the theory behind the whole show.

I personally loved the show. It's not about losing weight, it's about being happy with yourself. And her being what a "real woman" looks like, I think the woman was just talking about the fact that the only women you see in commercials etc are a size 0. The woman on the show looks more like an average woman, she's not teeny tiny like the ads. She hasn't been air brushed. It was just her in her natural beauty. I loved it.

BB, while I agree with you, what Nancy said was pretty much the exact response I was gonna have...

The days I feel crappy about myself are the days I skip the gym...the days I am really loving how I look are the days where I have my best workouts...

I havent seen the show, but ive seen commercials and was curious about what kind of message they were going to be putting out...until I see it for myself, I cant really have a good opinion though.

You know... it is funny how when you feel good about yourself you tend to do more and care more. I think I've had a inner peace come about me and I can feel my whole life changing for the better. I was dreading waking up everyday and would just lay around in the bed or on the couch ALL day long and was waited on hand and foot by TJ.

Now... I'm venturing out places. I went out new years eve and even got dressed nice with the whole jewelry, make up and hair. I felt pretty for once in my life.. and I NEVER feel pretty. No one made fun of me or stared and snickered which is what usually happens when I go out places like that. I guess I sort of felt like a Diva...lol

I bought all these new pretty clothes that I absolutely love. They look as good as clothes can look on a person my size. I can't say my self esteem is where it needs to be because I've got major issues with it. But I can definately notice a change.

I think that is why I am taking an interest in wanting to really try and lose weight so I can feel really pretty one day. I think I am trying harder this time because I felt what it felt like to be normal for a change.

So... I totally think that helping someone who is overweight believe in themselves and to feel beautiful definately contributes to that inner peace and strive to want to be beautiful from within and to be healthy.

very very well put :hail: I am sure you did look like a diva :) When people love themselves they really just radiate beauty, it really is amazing!

hehe, thats also why I looove shows like "what not to wear"...the difference that putting someone in flattering clothes and giving them a good haircut & makeup makes is really cool...I know its just TV, and obviously I dont know how much is true, but it seems like it sets up a lot of people to make more very positive life changes.

I've never even heard of it, so I'm commenting on something I know nothing about. I was just thinking that it's probably not that healthy for a lot of young girls who think the way some of these super models look is the perfect image of a woman's body, so having a few women with a different body type than the hard-to-attain super-thin being shown in a favorable light is perhaps not a bad idea.

This coming from the mother of a 23 year old stick-thin daughter. She is naturally thin, and sometimes I worry about how thin she is, but she's not trying to be super-model thin (which is when it becomes a problem, I think). She would probably have to work at putting weight on. She's always been very thin, even as a baby, not the baby-fat type. I just worry now that she's working 12 hour shifts as a nurse that she's not taking time to take care of herself and eat enough. She recently was treated for anemia, so I really don't think she's eating properly at times.

Well, if it weren't that, there would be something else to worry about!!

I watched the show and thought it was good. The poor girl had been on diets since the age of 12. She had such poor self esteem, she cried when she had to look at herself in her underwear. I don't think the message of the show was "be fat" or "it's great to be fat". I think the message was "learn to accept yourself as you are now". It doesn't mean you can't go on and improve and work to live a healthy lifestyle. But no matter what your weight, you shouldn't have to hate yourself.

I'd like to point out not everyone who carries extra weight is unhealthy. Many are active, eat right and are in the progress of loosing weight or have difficulties shedding pounds. Don't write them off as unhealthy.

Ok, again, I think the overall aim is a good idea. That having a higher self-esteem is wonderful and liking yourself is great! I thought it was great showing them what types of cloths to wear to make them feel better about themselves. I know what it's like to not like how you look and how certain clothing can just make you feel so much better about yourself when you look int he mirror and actually see someone that is not completely hideous.

I'm in NO WAY saying that the show's comments overthrow all of the positive aspects of it. I really think it's great they are showing them how to dress and feel good about themselves. But those comments in the show make me question wither they think they are even overweight. I wonder, honestly, how many people think that is her natural, healthy fat amount?

But a lot of the things they said (like that's what a real woman looks like, when it's NOT) is not something I think is right. She's not just carrying a little extra weight, she's carrying quiet a bit of extra weight. Some of the women on their opening are carrying a LOT of extra weight. I'm not saying they shouldn't like themselves because they are overweight, but I really don't like the message that being overweight is normal or good.

Uh what is wrong with helping these women feel good about themselves? I think the show is good.
Have you seen the show? I never once said I don't think they should feel good about themselves, in fact I made it a point to say I think the overall aim of the show is great.

ReRead my first post. I said that liking themselves is great, that the overall aim of the show is great, but those comments make it seem like they are saying being overweight is absolutely "normal" and healthy.

I don't think they are saying that it's healthy to be overweight. I think the main focus of the goal is to build self esteem. If you've never been significantly over weight you probably don't know just how severely damaged your self esteem is. I've struggled with weight for most of my life. Like I said, overall, the aim of the show is great, as far as being happy with who you are and not having a low-self esteem. If you actually saw the show, you might (*might*) know what I mean about those comments. It seemed to be saying being overweight was normal.

I'm going to try and post the full show and point out the comments I didn't like. I don't know if it will work though *crosses fingers* Maybe you guys can make an opinion after seeing the show. ;)

I loved it.
I see what you mean, about the air brushing and stuff. And I agree as far as air brushing and not everybody being a size 0.

But I don't think that's necessarily what a real woman looks like. I mean, yes, many are overweight and it seems to be the standards of "normal" are a bit higher in most people's minds, but I think she was carrying a bit more weight than what would be considered a healthy weight for her. What i mean is there's carrying a bit of extra fat, having a normal fat percentage that may be just a bit higher than a lot of others but is completely normal for you, but then there's being overweight. I think she'd be healthier maybe loosing a bit of fat. I just can't imagine that much extra weight being truly healthy.

Does that make sense? I'm not saying being overweight means you should be horribly ashamed or feel bad about yourself, but I'm not willing to say that it's all that.......healthy. Not having that much fat. And by "overweight" I really maen having too much body fat, not your actual weight.

Like being 240 means nothing to me if you are built like a horse with a ton of muscle, but have little fat or healthy fat levels. But being 240 and 25% body weight is probably not that healthy. Make sense?

Something I just was thinking, maybe the way she was "dieting" for 12 years was unhealthy in the first place? I'm just thinking cause I don't know, but maybe the way she "dieted" messed up her matabolism a little anyways. I'm not sure much about that stuff, but I've heard of people who "dieted" the wrong ways and end up messing up their matabolism real bad causing a larger gain in wieght later in life. If that was true though, that would mean she's still unhealthy and was unhealthy then. But that's only if that was how she did the dieting.

My main gripe in this show, is they do nothing to show them a healthyer way to live. I really wish along with making them feel good about themselves, they gave some health tips as well.

(asteriks are to emphasize the *Difference between your weight and your fat percentage*)

There's also a difference between a few extra lbs, and being more than a little overweight. I mean, everyone needs fat, some carry more than others, but I can't imagine how 20% body fat is healthy?

I'm going to try and post the video so people can watch it and I can point out the comments I didn't like easier. Maybe that will make it easier for people to show me how they took those comments.

I agree, hating yourself is never a good thing, but I don't think the show really said anything about living a healthier lifestyle. It seemd (To me only apparently lol) that she (since there's only been one episode) was at a healthy body weight for her, that that was what a normal *healthy* fat percentage was for her.

Which again, I just can't imagine how if she was truly eating healthy, exercising, and living a healthy life style how that was a truly healthy body fat weight for her.

I thought some of the comments made were hurtfull to those who are a size 2 or somewhere around there, NOT because we are starving ourselves, but because we are that way, and then there are people saying we should be wider because people who are a size two arn't real women...? ((Sorry for horrible spelling and such its 2 am :D )

I don't think ANYONE no matter what comments were made would think that being overweight is healthy.

people who are overweight certainly don't feel that it is normal and OBVIOUSLY the people that snicker and poke fun at them don't think it is normal either.

I understand your issue with the show... but I just don't think THAT show is going to make ANYONE believe that being overweight is normal and healthy. Except for maybe the completely ignorant... and there is really no getting through to peopel like that anyway.

Have you seen the show?

I'm just asking because it seems many haven't seen the show, but are commenting on it. So I want to see who saw the show and are making comments on the show and not just what I wrote or that small section of the show.

Yeah I guess that's true. I still don't enjoy those comments. But I see what you mean, most people aren't going to think being overweight is normal just because of those comments. But they do make it seem like it's her healthy weight. That being overweight is healthy. Those comments do bug me. I think I'll see about watching at least the next 2 episodes, and see about how they deal with it more before completely not watching the show. But those comments really make it seem like they are saying being that overweight is healthy. Not that she's horribly overweight or anything.
