Ok,
again, I think the overall aim is a good idea. That having a higher self-esteem is wonderful and liking yourself is great! I thought it was great showing them what types of cloths to wear to make them feel better about themselves. I know what it's like to not like how you look and how certain clothing can just make you feel so much better about yourself when you look int he mirror and actually see someone that is not completely hideous.
I'm in NO WAY saying that the show's comments overthrow all of the positive aspects of it. I really think it's great they are showing them how to dress and feel good about themselves. But those comments in the show make me question wither they think they are even overweight. I wonder, honestly, how many people think that is her natural, healthy fat amount?
But a lot of the things they said (like that's what a real woman looks like, when it's NOT) is not something I think is right. She's not just carrying a little extra weight, she's carrying quiet a bit of extra weight. Some of the women on their opening are carrying a LOT of extra weight. I'm not saying they shouldn't like themselves because they are overweight, but I really don't like the message that being overweight is normal or good.
Uh what is wrong with helping these women feel good about themselves? I think the show is good.
Have you seen the show? I never once said I don't think they should feel good about themselves, in fact I made it a point to say I think the overall aim of the show is great.
ReRead my first post. I said that liking themselves is great, that the overall aim of the show is great, but those comments make it seem like they are saying being overweight is absolutely "normal" and healthy.
I don't think they are saying that it's healthy to be overweight. I think the main focus of the goal is to build self esteem. If you've never been significantly over weight you probably don't know just how severely damaged your self esteem is. I've struggled with weight for most of my life. And it's hard when you see yourself in the mirror or in pictures and you just cringe. My poor self esteem had had such a negative impact on my life that I've missed out on a lot. And it definately contributed to my phobia of the GYN doctors.
I haven't seen the show or even heard about it. But from what's been described just sounds like they are trying to be the stepping stone in changing people's lives by teaching them how to love themselves no matter what weight they are. Once you can love yourself and have a decent self esteem the whole losing weight thing probably falls into place. I would imagine once you feel good about yourself you would then want to look good and take the steps necessary to do so. That's just my opinion. I think they may be onto something good with the theory behind the whole show.
Like I said, overall, the aim of the show is great, as far as being happy with who you are and not having a low-self esteem. If you actually saw the show, you might (*might*) know what I mean about those comments. It seemed to be saying being overweight was normal.
I'm going to try and post the full show and point out the comments I didn't like. I don't know if it will work though *crosses fingers* Maybe you guys can make an opinion after seeing the show.
I personally loved the show. It's not about losing weight, it's about being happy with yourself. And her being what a "real woman" looks like, I think the woman was just talking about the fact that the only women you see in commercials etc are a size 0. The woman on the show looks more like an average woman, she's not teeny tiny like the ads. She hasn't been air brushed. It was just her in her natural beauty. I loved it.
I see what you mean, about the air brushing and stuff. And I agree as far as air brushing and not everybody being a size 0.
But I don't think that's necessarily what a real woman looks like. I mean, yes, many are overweight and it seems to be the standards of "normal" are a bit higher in most people's minds, but I think she was carrying a bit more weight than what would be considered a healthy weight for her. What i mean is there's carrying a bit of extra fat, having a normal fat percentage that may be just a bit higher than a lot of others but is completely normal for you, but then there's being overweight. I think she'd be healthier maybe loosing a bit of fat. I just can't imagine that much extra weight being truly healthy.
Does that make sense? I'm not saying being overweight means you should be horribly ashamed or feel bad about yourself, but I'm not willing to say that it's all that.......healthy. Not having that much fat. And by "overweight" I really maen having too much body fat, not your actual weight.
Like being 240 means nothing to me if you are built like a horse with a ton of muscle, but have little fat or healthy fat levels. But being 240 and 25% body weight is probably not that healthy. Make sense?
Something I just was thinking, maybe the way she was "dieting" for 12 years was unhealthy in the first place? I'm just thinking cause I don't know, but maybe the way she "dieted" messed up her matabolism a little anyways. I'm not sure much about that stuff, but I've heard of people who "dieted" the wrong ways and end up messing up their matabolism real bad causing a larger gain in wieght later in life. If that was true though, that would mean she's still unhealthy and was unhealthy then. But that's only if that was how she did the dieting.
My main gripe in this show, is they do nothing to show them a healthyer way to live. I really wish along with making them feel good about themselves, they gave some health tips as well.
