How often do you REALLY wash the food dish?

Gypsy's food bowl gets rinsed out in the morning and scrubbed at night. If we don't rinse it, it smells like garlic because its home made food so it can get rather icky. Her water bowl is cleaned at night & she is given fresh water twice a day.

prob not as often as they should...

Oakley gets free-fed, so there is like ALWAYS food in his bowl, which just makes it harder to wash, since yeah...there is food in it? And its just dry kibble, so it really doesnt get that dirty. They prob each get wiped down once a week.

::shrug:: when I eat popcorn out of a bowl, I re-use it, so yeah...

water dishes are rinsed and filled 2x per day. I put them in the dishwasher every other day. Food dishes (dry kibble) get put in the dishwasher each evening.

Dry food dishes get washed every 2-3 days at my house. Wet food dishes get washed after every use so they don't attract insects. Water dishes are rinsed and refilled every morning, and washed once or twice a week.

Daaang,.. I'm a bad dog owner.

My dogs' dishes hardly ever get washed, as embarrassing as it is to admit it. It's a habit that we've had since before becoming more responsible dog owners once I got into dog showing, and have not yet changed. Heck, the dishes in our house hardly ever get washed!

I don't see how its a sign of irresponsibility. My dogs have never gotten sick from a dirty food bowl that is typically spotless anyway. Daily they encounter many worse things than a left over crumb of dry dog food and some dog drool.

I think its definitely a case of anthropomorphism, WE don't like dirty dishes, so why should they have one? Well, it does not seem to make difference to them.

PS, if I have dry cereal, I am not washing that bowl!

I have to admit, the outside dishes pretty much never get washed, although the water dish gets rinsed and re-filled twice daily, or more if it is very hot out. The inside dishes go in the dishwasher whenever they start looking icky, which is maybe once or twice a week. Only dry kibble goes in the food dishes so, like others have said, they don't get too gross.

My dog's eat horse crap, I don't think they mind a little dirt in the water :p

I rinse out their dishes after the PM feeding, actually wash them about once a week. My dog's have NEVER left anything to clean up, lol!

All of our dishes get washed by hand every few days, unless of course they are noticeably dirty.

That's a good idea Tosca's Mom. Mine have rubber around the outside wonder how they'd do in the dishwasher.. I have 2 down as side by side water bowls.. and two others one for each dog when he gets here..
Silly, you pull the rubber thing off and wash it in some hot water as well. I wouldn't advise the dishwasher, though, just in case.

Sounds like everyone uses only one food bowl. The secret is, have three. Used ones get into the dishwasher regularly and there is always a fresh clean bowl for each meal.
ONLY three????? :yikes: Kitties get fed 2-3x a day.. I need more bowls than that, LMAO! I just washed 12 this afternoon and still had 4 in the cupboard. Found two I had missed, so 18 bowls is good. (we have these little cheap ones that are shiny and white from wal-mart.. at $2 a bowl that I can use for myself as well, they are nice.)

These cats have me well-trained.

i usually just rinse the dry food dishes, but i scrub the wet food dishes every day, cause they get really gross. sometimes i skip a day, but not very often. water dishes get rinsed once a day and scrubbed when yucky.
