At least once or twice a year...usually during high shedding season and then it's mostly to get the undercoat out.

I use a spray-on waterless shampoo thingy on him when I'm brushing him out, keeps the static down.

He gets a pants wash much more often when we're introducing a new protein source.

For those that never bath, are you serious when you say your dog doesn't stink? Or do YOU just not smell it?

Every time I come across a really smelly dog, you know, the stink on your hands type, the owner swears up and down they don't smell and never get bathed.
I also find that short hairs smell worse then long hairs.

Really?? Of all the stinky dogs I've met, I don't think any of them were short-haired. I've met a lot of stinky golden retrievers. And other dogs with that sort of hair.

I've never noticed an odor from Juno. And I have my nose in her fur all the time haha. She smells better after being bathed in berry shampoo :)p) but even when I don't bathe her, she doesn't smell BAD. But she's never gonna longer than a couple months without a bath.

Every couple months. I don't mind the bathing part at all, it's the drying/post bath shedding that I can't deal with!!

I wonder that too. I have met a couple never bathed dogs who really do not have an odor at all, but most of the people I meet with dogs who proudly state they've never bathed them have dogs who are just gross. They're like petting an oil slick and they smell so overwhelmingly doggy.

And I don't think it's that smooth coated dogs smell worse than long coated dogs. I think it's that a lot of smooth coated dog owners never bathe their dogs, whereas most long coated dog owners do.

I think the worst smelling dogs I come across are generally retrievers, Malamutes, Sibes, Rottweilers and mastiff type breeds. I've met my fair shair of stinky Dobes too. I bet it is difficult to fit a giant breed into a bath tub, so I guess I can sort of understand that (although there are do it yourself dog wash places), but it's like a lot of people who own these particular breeds just don't believe dogs need baths.

In any case, I too like to make sure my home and my dogs smell as least doggy as possible. I like petting clean, silky, smooth fur. I don't want a film on my hands after touching a dog, and if I feel that film, I know it must be all over the rest of the house too. Ripley gets really greasy quickly, and smells like old feet or something after a couple weeks. It's really gross, and I don't know why het gets like that. I've thought about diet, but he is fed a good food, and I can't really switch him since he's so sensitive. So instead, I just bathe him every couple of weeks, keep the dog bedding super clean, wipe out his crate constantly, etc. I can't stand doggy odour.

Stinkiest breed goes to English bulldogs. Ewwwww. I've only ever met ONE that didn't stink. Not surprisingly, he's also the only one that's not overweight, and is a full-time house dog.

I know technically both my dogs are smooth coated, but Gavroche's hair is still much shorter than Logan's. I'd give Gavroche a bath over Logan anyday, because it's so much simpler. Wash, shake, and dry in 10 minutes. Logan takes foreverrrrr to dry compared to Gavroche.

Well, I'm not able to judge that, am I? I guess conversely I wonder if those of you who bathe your dogs non-stop really aren't doing any sort of harm to them - or do you just not notice because you never see your dogs left more natural?

Like I said, I live with my parents. Neither are dog people, and my mother hates dog hair and smell. She doesn't ever comment on a smell from Meg. She never feels greasy to me, and she sleeps on my pillow much of the day without leaving an odor I notice. I also have minor dog allergies, and don't react much at all to her. She's short haired, not a water dog (I find those dogs to have the greasiest coat by nature), and she eats great food. I'm not about to bathe her just because.

As my dog is white - it is seasonal.
In winter we are lucky as we have 4 months of snow, not so dirty.
Spring and autumn is the worth time for us - legs almoust every third day and body once in a two weeks.
Summer is ok - once a month.

We don't have a bathing schedule, it's pretty much just whenever they need it. :) It usually ends up being every month or two.

You know, I think you probably have a solid point here! I never thought of it that way.

As for the smelly long haired breeds, I couldn't agree more!!

BB, if you use the correct shampoo for their skin type then you have no problem. I am not doing my dogs a disservice by keeping them clean. I much prefer them to be grease free and sparkling white. They sleep on my bed, live on the couches and are show dogs, so therefore must be clean.\

I wonder if people who never bath their dogs have just become used to the smell?

I must say, I have become slightly immune to dog smell. Not because I have smelly dogs, but at the places I go to, not many people bath their dogs and when you're around that quite a bit you do become slightly immune.

I HATE wet dog smell. Leo has wet dog smell like crazy and he is the one I have to bath more often. I hate bathing him but I have to. He gets bathed so, so often(sometimes more than once a week). The reason is that he is a filthy dog. I mean filthy isn't a strong enough word, he is always doing disgusting things. He loves swimming, and I don't understand this because he HATES having a bath. Also did I mention I HATE wet dog smell?!?! Bathing Leo makes me sad D: I bath with baby shampoo (human baby shampoo, unscented etc.) because it is really gentle on his skin and I need something that gentle because he baths so often.

Bella is a lady and she keeps herself clean for the most part, but I bath her. As little as possible but she still baths(at least every 2 months sometimes more often but most times less often). She LOVES having a bath. She jumps in the bath herself and stands still for the entire bath, she only jumps out when I ask her to and she comes and sits on top of me to get wiped down (I hate this part but she does it, I don't know why, I have never asked her to do this) the irony is she HATES water any other time except for a bath. Also she doesn't really have wet dog smell. I don't understand this?

Tiffany gets a bath around every other week. She's a Maltese and they require more grooming than average. If I slack off with bathing her, her hair gets tangled really easily too. The conditioner I use makes her hair really soft and less prone to tangling.

Chloe gets a bath whenever she gets groomed, which is every 6-8 weeks, I think. Whenever her feet start getting fuzzy again or her coat starts getting oily, I take her in.

Rose gets a bath when Chloe gets a bath, although sometimes Rose will go longer. It just depends if she has a doggy odor or not and what kind of condition her coat is in. During the summer she gets bathed much more often as she is outside more and plays around in the field and rolls on dead thing.

I try to bath mine every 2-4 weeks. It's snowy in Ontario, you wouldn't think they would be dirty, but they get dirty.. I'm at work 22 hrs+ a week and school 28 ish+ hours a week. They aren't getting bathed and groomed as much as I'd like, but they are in my bed, and furniture so I prefer cleaner..

I know people whose houses you go into and it smells like dirty dog. I'm 99% sure they don't notice. Their dogs leave nasty smell on my hands if you touch them. Some get professionally groomed every so often, others not.. but you'd think that touching your dog = smells hands you'd notice.. Mine look for loving a lot. I'd know if they smelled that bad.. or I'd like to think so.

Those who don't bath or bathe every few months.....how the heck does you dog stay clean?! Aero has to get a bath nearly every week cos after a week of dog park and training classes and walks and social hour he is a mess!

lol I'm wondering what in the world your dogs are doing to get so dirty!

Meg goes to the barn with me, she plays agility in the indoor riding ring, but the dirt just falls off her. She doesn't play with other dogs really, so she isn't being chewed on and such, but she's certainly not a 'never goes out' dog either.

I admit, I gave Meg a bath today to see if anyone we interact with every day would notice. The only comment we got, while in a heated car with someone, was "that new perfume isn't working for you". I had to point out that it was Meg's shampoo. She must not have been too nasty if everyone who had their hands on her today didn't notice a change!

The benefit of short hair! :) In the summer Juno goes swimming, she digs in mud puddles, runs through the woods, etc... and she can look like an absolute mess, especially if she's wet, but if she's dry it all just brushes right off and she looks brand new again. I'll usually still bathe her afterward just because I know what she was playing in, but she certainly doesn't NEED one.

Lucy on the other hand, ugh I hate bringing her anywhere where there's dirt because she gets so disgusting, and there's no way to avoid bathing her.
