How much would you be willing to pay for a dog?

Not sure I'd ever want to purchase from a breeder in the future. I have breeder friends, one that wanted me to take one of her pups (for free) and title him in agility and obedience, as well as conformation, and maybe in that case I would consider it in the future.. but I at this point never plan to go searching to purchase a purebred dog. So, $0 from a breeder. But, in theory if I were to search for purebred dog from a breeder, I wouldn't pay over probably $800-900. Certainly nothing over $1,000. I could pay for the rescue/transport.. the life of at least 10 dogs fro that much, so I just know I could never ever pay $1,000 or more and be consciously okay with that.

I'd be willing to pay up to $200 or so for a dog from rescue, not more than $100 from a shelter.

honestly it depends what im looking for.
thus far most of my dogs have fallen in my lap, my first dog was a deaf dane rescue, my first family dog was from a breeder but they were family frineds...

vixie was "cheap" because she was already 6 months old and the breeder didnt want to keep her as she had kept another female from the litter.
Dodger was "cheap" from a divorse situation

ruby was another divorse situation she was cost of shipping lol
and jasper, well he was from "unfortunate circumstance" (a great breeder, another divorse and a jackass breeding dogs that were supposed to be retired...) and the breeder couldnt keep him due to apartment living, he was also cost of shipping.

that being said, if i was purposly looking for my next dog, id be looking to pay somewhere around the $1200 mark for a nice hairless female with potential.
you have to be carefull with this breed as theres alot of price gougers out there, but there also an "expensive" breed...middle ground tends to be $1000-$1500 oer that tend to be gougers and bybs looking to cash in on an "unusual breed"

it realy does depend though, for a pet only spay/neuter mabe up to $800 for the right breed, up to $300 from a shelter...

If shelters/rescues charge $500 to $600, no wonder people go to the classifieds for back yard bred dogs. I wouldn't pay more than the spay, shots and a little more to help support the shelter....a couple hundred dollars ought to cover it. Otherwise, forget it. LOL. From a breeder who health tests, I wouldn't pay more than $1000 -$1,200 tops, I don't think for a companion dog.

I can't imagine spending any less than $1200, unless the dog were a rescue. I don't like to spend that much or more on the initial price, but that's what the majority of reputable breeders ask for. Dance was $1250 and I do have a hard time justifying why a Toller should be that much, but she was worth it and I'll do it again. Keira was $1200 which makes sense for a Doberman between ear cropping (which is a huge expense) and whatnot. Ripley would have been $1200 as well, but he was my payment for helping out with the litter and everything else I've done for her. We would have paid for him, but his breeder insisted that we didn't. That said, I wouldn't pay more than $1500 for a well bred dog I don't think (Which might be hard -- Dobermans tend to sell for anywhere from $1500 to $2500). And I wouldn't pay more than $300 for an adoption fee from a rescue.

I also wanted to add that it really depends on the breed. Before getting a Border Collie, I had been debating between that and a Toller. I was expecting to pay around ~$1500 for a Toller, plus the cost of a plane ticket.

And when it comes to rescues, I wouldn't pay for than $400 at the very most.

I paid $1,000 for my Doberman. She wanted $1,200 but I negotiated. I assured her that I would make a stupendous home for her puppy and that ought to be worth something. And it was, to her. You don't always have to pay what they ask. The asking prices for dogs vary, depending on the geographical location, among other things.

I'm all for adoption and since we have multiple high kill shelters (not to mention gassing facilities) and rescues are working hard to pull each dog from there, I would rather foster/adopt $25 dog and spend money on vet bills and good quality food to rehabilitate them and get them adopted out into a loving and responsible home.

Uno didnt cost me a dime, but I've invested a lot of myself into his care and wellbeing.

Very true. Working Border Collies are pretty cheap compared to most other dogs.

Geography plays a huge part. I know people that have bought good papillons for closer to $700 but it's just because of the area. Around here they go for much more. I'd also be willing to spend a LOT for a nice imported phalene from either the UK, Sweden, or Finland. It's very hard to find nice ones over here.

The highest I myself have payed is $80, while my parents payed $300 for a pet store dog:eek:, who lived a long healthy life.
Nala (RIP) $300(parents got from pet store)
Chevy $0 (Free from a lady who no longer wanted her)
Zane $50(shelter)
Abby $80(shelter)
Deputy $0(Lady had too many dogs)

I wouldn't buy a dog that cost more than a horse, if I just wanted a pet. I to would rather spend the money on health care/food/toys.

I also wanted to mention that, as you all probably know, free dogs are never *really* free. I hear people complain all the time at the clinic about spending so much money on a free dog or cat. I have spent a LOT of money on Gavroche despite him being free initially. Heck just in the last week I've spent $300 on him...crate upgrade, two bags of food, chewies, toys, etc. Worth every penny though.

Now, what I don't understand is why people pay $13,000 to $20,000 for a dog that is barely trained in basic obedience, just to tie their kid to it and call it a service dog. If I were to get a dog that was already fully trained, I'd be willing to pay $5,000 to $7,000, but it better be WELL trained...keep in mind that most programs do get a lot of donations to help cover the cost of the dogs. Otherwise the estimated cost of training/raising would be in excess of $30,000 in many cases (from birth to placement). With that in mind, getting a good dog for $2000 and training myself is more than reasonable.

$2000 is also just my upper limit. The breeder never told me exactly how much a typical puppy costs, though they did say they'd work with me on price. So I highly doubt I will be paying $2000 for one.

I will never buy a dog from a breeder, so that's a $0 ;)

From a shelter, I'd pay whatever they were asking, since it's a charity. I'm not paying for only my dog, I'm paying for them to rescue dozens of others. Up to $500 seems reasonable to me, if they fully vet/fix/temperament test/etc all their dogs.

If their costs average out to over $500/animal, I'd wonder why they hadn't negotiated deals with vets or figured out ways to lower their costs. That said, I'll donate far more to the rescue group than the adoption fee. Lucy only cost $50 from the city shelter, but we donated significantly more than that, since we believe in the cause.

From a private party...ZERO...I have never gone this route, but I figure Iam likely going to be taking on a problem dog, and Iam not paying them to relieve them of their problem. I can move on to the next dog as there are plenty of freebies out there

from a shelter I have paid $140. But several of my shelter dogs were free. I don't really see paying more than $200 unless things inflate and the price is valid for what you get.

I don't ever see myself purchasing a dog from a breeder, unless there are no more dogs to rescue :) :)

2000$ is my limit on a well bred dog. Well bred poodles tend to be 1200-2000$ (and anything above is in it for the color or money for a pet dog!). I will pay for quality, health and temperament.
Adoption, i dont know. I rescued my cats for free from different situations.

Depends upon the breed and my available finances. If I had the money, and the breed was rare or the dog was an import, I'd go up to $1000 - but no more than that.

I'm not sure what my cap is. For a rescue dog, probably $400-500, though I'd definitely want to check out the rescue first. :) I don't know whether I'll get a dog from a breeder, since my dogs will be primarily pets and I don't see myself competing in anything. But if I were to obtain a dog from a breeder, cost would likely be one of my last concerns.

My from-a-rescue dog has ended up costing $$$. The initial outlay was a drop in the bucket. ;)

It sounds like the Aussie pup I'm hopefully getting this summer is going to run about $1000, but this breeder does EVERYTHING, so to me, it's worth it.

I have a hard time paying more than $250 for a breed rescue dog and more than $150 for a shelter dog. I know that my money is going to help more dogs and such, but I'm also almost guaranteed to run into some sort of issue with that dog and I'd like a little extra money to take care of it.

I think my top would be $1500... I suppose prices vary depending on the breed but I don't think any of the breeds I want are THAT expensive. Juno was $1000. Pretty penny but to me it's worth it knowing her parents were health tested and that I have lifetime support from the breeder.

For a dog from a breeder, I'd be willing to consider up to $1500 for a show puppy, $1000 for a pet (depending on breed).

For a breed specific rescue, I'd consider up to $400.

From a shelter, up to $150.
