I dunno if I have already ask this? BUT -- I'm so curious of how all of you came up with names for your dogs? What's background story about the names?

Lacey already came with Lacey, we really like that name it stick with her personality etc

I jungled with names when I got Misty, some ppl WAIT for their personality to unfold. It took a day to name Misty, I have always like the name Misty. I was choosing the name between Misty & Daisy.

I had a deaf interpreter name "Missy", I did like her she was very nice & a talent signer

So ... I ask everyone for their opinion, they were like "Name her whatever you want" that didn't help so I selected "Misty"

That's so weird, i was going to put this exact topic this morning.

Milo was going to be Apollo, but i want to name a future kid Apollo, so i chose Milo, as it was my second favorite boys name, and i figured if i still liked it enough for a kid Milo would be gone by the time i had my second son.

however, after saying "Milo!" 36 times an hour in a scolding tone, i don't think i'll put it on a kid.

(his middle name is Sebastian because someone on another forum suggested it, and i loved it)

Benji my mom named, because he "looks like the movie Benji."

I was still in Policing when I got Riot.. so I wanted a "police related" theme..

His name was going to be Sargeant, but I didn't like how it sounded on re-call.. soo.. "Riot" it was.

Sadie was a rescue and already named.
Dennis ??? I don't know , we had him a week and I couldn't decide, the common one that came up with the kids was Yoshi, off super mario brothers. Dennis just popped in my head and it stuck.
Emilio... I had nothing to do with it and I hate it. My stepson lived with his mom at the time he was named, then moved in with us and brought the dog. I call him Mili or Billy goat.

I ust looked at her coat!

Kona is a Hawaiian coffee, and I thought it sounded very fitting, since she is brown and all :)

Thunder was Corbin when I adopted him, then I changed his name to Caleb. I don't even remember how he earned the nickname "Thunder" but it stuck and now that's what we call him all the time.

Sammy was named after my niece's Chow Chow who had passed away not long before Sammy was born. Her name was Samantha, a.k.a Sam... so then Sam became Sammy.

Scooter was given his name because John had just started getting into buying mopeds and scooters.

We adopted Zoe from the SPCA, and they had named her "Zahara". We didn't like it, and thank God because she would have had the same name as the Pitt-Jolie baby!! My husband thought of "Zoe" while we were still filling out paper work. It just came to him, I guess!

I usually come up with a name that reflects the dogs personality.

Dasher was always running around the house. He is pretty intense and always seems to have a purpose. So he doesn't seem to just run aimlessly. He seems to dash around like he had a plan. :D

Zip was a rescue and the HS named him Trigger.... hated it, didn't fit him at all. Zip also runs around a lot but he started off in short spurts and hops. Zip seemed to fit. :D

Not sure if that makes sense now...but it seemed to make sense to me at the time. ;)

Ollie was named that in Petfinder when I saw him . His sparkling eyes and smile said " By Golly I'm jolly and full of folly " So Ollie stuck !

Ok, I'll give you the abridged version:

I needed a name that conveyed strength, royalty, power and that was unusual. I also look for regional names for my dogs...something from the general geographic area that they're from.

Also since this was my first PH, I wanted a way to constantly remind myself that I had to be vigilant and super careful in my training and approach. Thus the name Xerxes presented itself in an unique manner.

Mac is a Papillon so we named him McQueen (after Steve McQueen in the movie Papillon), but we call him Mac or Mackie most of the time. He has numerous nicknames.

I got the name Saffie from a dutch cartoon show on television. I loved that show as a kid and the dog in that show was called Saffie. It means 'cigarette' in some dutch dialects. It sounds funny and it suits her.
Boy was allready named Boy, I don't like it that much but I allready knew him before I got him so I was used to calling him Boy.

Uncle Fred was called "Fred" in rescue- then when my husband saw him he said he resembled his Uncle Fred, so that's what he is called. Lest you think it's disrespectful, my husband says every time he calls Uncle Fred he thinks of all the good times he had as a kid on his Uncle Fred's farm in western Kentucky, so it's worked out really well.

People always say "He really looks like an Uncle Fred" and they are more right than they know.

Mini was nemed by my seven year old son before she was even ours. Struck by the similarity in markings, he started calling her Minifred even though at the time her name was Snoopy (ugh!).

Meg came into rescue with the name "Spice", which she didn't seem to know. I wanted to stick to the theme and give her a spice-related name, so she was Nutmeg, which morphed into Meggie and finally Meg stuck.

My pomeranian's name is Theo. He already had an identity crisis before my sisters and i agreed with his name. :p I wanted to name him gingko, it sounds wacky and unique but my sisters didn't like it. I suggested Theo after some time and they agreed and i liked it, too.

Our female black Lab - Black Tear of Cheyene -- Well, she's black (duh) and I like Indian type names plus my husband wanted to name her Tira. You combine "tear" and "of" and say them both together and you get Tira.

Our male chocolate Lab - Top Notch Gunner -- My husband was a Gunners Mate in the US Navy and we thought our little man was "top notch". :D

Our youngest (Tira's 5 mo old pup), male black Lab - Black Hawk Rebel -- His mom was a southern dog and his grandma and grandpa (me and Tony) are from the South (hence the "rebel" part), he's black, and he's got a short strip that goes up his nose that looks like a mohawk. It's apparently from the way he laid in the womb.

When we got Bear his previous owner had named him Bear and he looks like one, so we kept it.
Dixie was actually named by my 4 year old daughter. She was playing with her just a few days after we got her and she called her Dixie and the puppy came running to her. So Dixie it was. She was names Chloe by her previous owner and it just didn't fit her.
