My husband's cousin had a white boxer male. Nice sweet dog. He was a little older than Brutus. It seems his daughter takes the Boxer shopping with her, leaves it in the car...forgets about it, goes off with her friends, and the poor dog suffocates. I am so heartbroken about this, he was such a sweetie. I don't understand how someone can be so irresponsible, and such an idiot to forget about a dog and let it die in a car.

She is graduating and we are supposed to send her a graduation present, and I don't want to. I don't think she deserves anything. I want to send a donation to boxer rescue in memorial for the dog...in lieu of her present. Hubby doesn't see it my way.

Am I wrong?

I don't think you are wrong. I mean, I wouldn't be able to be friends with someone who did that. And I don't send presents to people who aren't friends.

Im with you on this one. I would send the donation to the boxer resuce and send her the thank you note for it, so she know what you did.

I leave Jazz and Emma in the car sometimes. BUT I leave the AC running full blast if it is hot out and only if I am going to be gone a few seconds.

I think the donation is a really good idea. Just send her a card that says sent in your dogs memory.

I would send the donation, it sounds like a great idea.

In a graduation card, include a note that says in Lieu of a gift a donation has been made in honor of (dogs name) to the Boxer Rescue of -----.

I do not think it would be rude, however it would get the point across well.

If you choose not to send a gift, I think that's fine. I certainly understand why you wouldn't.

But I wouldn't keep harping her about it or rubbing it in. I'm sure she probably feels horrible for what she did, and is kicking herself enough. I had a friend who did something similar (accidentally killed the beloved family dog through a moment of carelessness), and he actually required nearly two years of therapy to get over his guilt.

I think the donation is an inspired idea. I'd go with that ;) You're following your conscience, doing something constructive AND no one can carp about you being too cheap to send a graduation gift. It's a good object lesson.

Actually I haven't said anything to her. I don't really feel like talking to her.

She already has a new boxer. I know she felt bad, but seemed to get over it pretty quickly with the new dog.

I completely agree with you. I don't see how ANYBODY can just forget about a dog in the car. Are you kidding me? Imagine what that dog must have gone through!

Maybe someone should lock her in the car for a few hours so she wont forget with the new dog she now has.
Even better.

I say send the gift.

I'm gonna disagree with everyone here, and say send the gift. You're talking about family. This is your husband's cousin, and he didn't do anything wrong. AND he still loves his daughter I am sure. If you don't send the gift, you may end up insulting him and putting strain on his relationship with your husband.

Being as I am her same age, I would *much* sooner sit in a hot car for that long than leave my dogs in there. WTH!? That shows extreme irresponsibility, and disregard for living animals. You must be so disapointed in your husbands cousin for getting her a new dog. I hope to God that girl is not going off on her own, it sounds like she has the maturity/mentality of a 12 year-old (I would not have done that when I was 12... and I don't know anyone with any sense who would!)

That is a HORRIBLE thing to go through, I totally feel for you and I would do the same thing. If I were her parents, I would probably tell animal control (yes, that's considered animal cruelty and is punishable by a big fine. even accidental.) or at least make her pay with her own money the fine that AC would've charged her with. It's unfortunate that they didn't seem to care enough to teach her a lesson. I do know people with an "all that matters is me" mentality, and I don't feel that just losing her dog would really affect her enough.... in my experience. Teenagers need to know there is punishment, even for "accidents"! (I know this from experience!) >:[
