dog friendly honeymoon detinations...

sorry if this kind of post bugs anyone, but im just after some suggestions.

My partner (lee) and I have just booked a venue for our wedding (25.05.07), I know it seems far away, but u have to book early. I cant quite belive we're doing it! Im so exited about planning it all! Any way, I want some suggestions for a honeymoon. We were thinking maybe NY or LA. We really dont fancy the whole sun type holiday. We're from the UK so any trips to USA are gona be really long haul, both of us have visited a fair few places in Europe, and its a bit too local, we'd prefer somewhere further out. Preferably a dog friendly destination for a staffie, as we really wouldn't like to leave shadow behind. Im gutted enough she wont be at our wedding.

Any suggestions?

Or any suggestions for thing we can do if we do go to NY or LA, I've been to NY when I was 17, god that seems ages ago, (im now 22), and i loved it, went to ellis ilsand (it was a college trip to NY, we were studying race and ethnicity, thus the trip to ellis island, although i really enjoyed it), I went up Emprie state buliding (night time) it was fab, and of course central park, I actually got lost in there, was wandering around for 2 hrs!

Any imput would be really appreciated!

I know you said yu don't really care for "sunny destinations" but there's this island off the coast of Brazil that is AMAZING!!! It's a nature preserve with TONS of animals (so Shadow sadly wouldn't be allowed) and there's no civilization on the island save the hotel.

As for what to do in NY, I was just there last year on a field trip with my Travel and Tourism class and it's an amazing city but I don't really know of stuff there is to DO with your dog though they are pretty dog friendly. Toronto, ON was rated one of the top Dog friendly cities but sadly Ontario has passed a Pit Bull Ban (grrrrrr) so Shadow wouldn;t be allowed. Chicago is another City that is very dog friendly and they have miles of trails that goes around this lake. For a more in depth search go to www.petfriendly.com (mainly for the US) or www.petfriendly.ca (for Canada)

I'd suggest San Francisco - especially over LA, and a trip through the Napa wine country.

How long will your trip be? Spending a few days in the Grand Canyon on the way would be unforgettable . . . or maybe visiting Alaska . . .

I'm like you, I don't get into the whole touristy-sun-and-fun deal. San Francisco is a very dog-friendly place as well - especially large dogs. And there is so much to see and do there, along with all the fine dining you could ever want. The people are friendly as well and it's a beautiful, romantic city.

And if you feel like it, you can always rent a car and drive down the coastal highway to Big Sur and Monterey. The Pacific coast is gorgeous and totally different from the Atlantic in every possible way.

New Hampshire and Vermont and heck even Massachusetts have very quaint Bed and Breakfasts (lol that looks weird typing the plural???) I'm not sure about any specific dog friendly Inns, but anyway, New England :) is very nice for scerenity. I would stay away from the city life also. I hate to be rushed and in the middle of crowds. I don't even like taking the kids to the amusement parks, lol. I would also suggest Boston, MA (its a little busy but better than New York City) or Plymouth, MA (lots of museums and history stuff), Cape Cod !! (lovely beaches and May wouldn't be too sunny and hot), Salem, MA (if your into the Salem witches history) ummmmm... guess that's all I can think of right now :)

I know this may sound funny but what about Tennesee to visit the smokey mountains or visiting Gatlinsburg Tennesee is alot of fun and it is really pretty there it is more of the "country" scene but there is alot of stuff to do or even the grand ol state of Michigan there is alot of touristy towns in Michigan ecspecially in the northern parts of the state on both sides of the state there is Mackinac Isaland, Seashell City, The Soux, Holland Michigan (like a little Holland), and the sand dunes by Holland that is what my husband and I did for our honey moon we traveled the state of Michigan and stayed at camp grounds rather than at motels we had alot of fun and we were gone for 10 days

Where ever you go just have alot of fun it is one vacation you will always remember

Gatlinburg, Tennessee is beautiful, especially if you go in the fall when the trees are changing colors. There are a lot of dog friendly cabins there too, and there is a lot to do and see.

Sorry, guys, I've gotta stick by my San Francisco suggestion - and I live less than an hour away from Gatlinburg :D

Just think: you can spend time in one of the most beautiful cities anywhere, full of interesting things to see, the weather isn't hot (another dog friendly point), lots of places to walk, infinitely safer than New York or LA. A few miles away is the Napa Wine Country with all sorts of beautiful Bed and Breakfasts if you want to spend some time in the country. You're only a few hours away from the mountains, an hour or two from beautiful beaches, half a day from some world famous beaches (Big Sur, Monterey, Pismo) . . . One thing I really miss about not living there is that in California you can find almost anything you want within a day's drive or less - most of the year you can be romping in snow one day and playing on the beach the next if you want!

I have been to Gatlinburg TN cool place, didnt see enough to make a judgement on it. If you want to see a big rock to base you marriage on I recomend Mt McKinnley (did I spell that right I allways call it Denali) then again Im partial to my state. There is another rock or stone in Ireland, Ild not recomend kissing it Ive heard the locals like to well... relieve themselves on it, true or not I dont know.

Somehow I missed the South Wales part, Ive never been to Europe and there is to much of the US I havent seen yet, a trip to Ireland and possibly Germany are on my list of places to go.

You have a while to plan the perfect Honeymoon, make it all its ment to be.

Shadow....remember that the US is not as dog friendly as Europe. That's why I would stay away from the big cities. If you do the New England bit, you're only a couple of hours from Montreal ...for a change of pace.

I heard Italy, Spain, and France is nice... Actually I think Italy is a party country (The biggest rave in history I believe was in Venice).

A few things.
1. has shadow even been on a plane ride? And can you bring her over from the UK? I know to travel from here oversea can be a bit difficult, some places even have you quarentine your dog.
2. There have been many good suggestion and really look at friendly places, but as someone mentioned the US is not the same w/ being pet friendly. Many hotels are not pet friendly and some that are aren't the greatest so do some research, check pics and even try to find someone here that know the hotel(s). I don't want you to think all places are bad but I'd hate for you to travel that far and be in a horrible place.
And think of it this way you have plenty of time to find the perfect place.
Good luck!
