I'm curious...

at what point did y'all chose to become vegetarian? Was there a certain event that suddenly changed your views? Did you grow up vegetarian? Is your family vegetarian?

my mum used to be vegetraian. i'd wanted to do it for a couple of years. but wasn't sure if i would be able to handle it. then i strated toyign with the idea even more about a year and a half ago. i'd always hated the ways some animals were treated. so i thought, this is it. it actually makes it personal. this is exactly what i want to do.

i told my mum and she's cooked vego for me ever since.

Eh I slide in and out of eating a vegetarian diet, but I stopped wanting to eat red meat in 7th grade. I learned more about stockyards and the cruelty that cows endured before being slaughtered, and it just horrified me. I had the odd notion in my head that all cattle were raised and slaughtered humanely, as we did on our ranch. When I got Ripley 2 years ago and fed him a raw diet, I stopped wanting pork. It smelled great when it was cooked, but raw it smells foul to me and it just spoiled my appetite for it.

My family is not vegetarian. My parents eat a fair amount of meat and my brother eats TONS. He will buy a box of steak and it'll be gone in a few days, he eats 2-3 of them in one sitting. His idea of a snack is some sausages and chips. Despite that, the man is super skinny and pretty healthy. I hate him :p

My family is actually pretty supportive of the way I eat. My mom will go out of her way to make meatless meals for me (tonight she made lasagna and put no meat in part of it, for me) and I, in turn, cook vegetarian/vegan meals for my parents when I find a good recipe.

I'm not a true vegetarian, though. I think cutting back on my meat consumption is healthy, but I still like chicken and turkey (I prefer free-range when I do eat it, though) and love seafood. I also will eat meat if I'm visiting someone's house and they serve meat as the main course. Most of my friends know I'm not a big meat-eater and will usually make something with no meat or very little meat for me. With strangers or acquaintances though i think it's courteous to eat what they cook. How are they supposed to know I'm a vegetarian?

I grew up non vegetarian, but when my dad died of cancer in '93 my sister became a vegan.. I still ate meat.. up until this year..

Jenna has a bad allergic reaction to beef. She'll get the squirts for days after she's eaten beef.. so instead of beef we use Boca Burger vergetarian meat instead.

I became vegetarian 20 years ago, after I read a sign/poster that said: "Why do you love animals called pets but eat animals called food?" I immediately read more about the so called 'food' animals and realized that it was not right to say that I care about all animals if I was directly contributing to the suffering and ultimate death of some of them. I also realized that just because they weren't considered to be 'pets' didn't mean that some animals could be exploited and made to suffer---especially when people can live much healthier lives without eating animals. I became vegan a few months later, and it's been the most rewarding choice (emotionally, spiritually, and healthfully) that I've ever made in my life. My family (father and siblings) are not vegetarian, but my mom became vegetarian a few months ago and says she feels healthier and more energenic than she has in years (she also told me that she wished that she did it a long time ago).

I became a vegetarian 5 years ago when I was 13. I don't really know what triggered it at that moment in my life, maybe I was a little older so understood more. No one else in my family is a vegetarian and I highly doubt anyone ever will be but I'm glad that they have accepted and respected my choice.

I became a vegetarian when I was 14. The day I learned about factory farming was the day I quit eating meat. My family is not vegetarian, but my mother was very respectful and understanding about my decision. She cooked special meals just for me and taught me how to cook for myself as well.

My sister became a vegetarian when she learned about the factory farming about 4 months ago. My dad will buy some things for her, but she has to provide for herself a lot. My mom is always calling her stupid for being a vegetarian. She has to make all her own meals.

I can't say i'm a vegetarian because I do eat meat, but not a lot because I can't stand the teast and I can't stand the feel of it in my month. I'm a very picky eater. Like I hate any kind of meat, eggs, any kind of seafood. SO I don't eat much.

I've been wanting to become vegetarian. I just hate knowing that what I'm eating has been inhumanely slaughtered. Its hard though, because like someone mentioned above, when your at someone else's house, you can't turn down the meal if it has meat in it, it would be too rude.

I haven't eaten veal in forever though, its just so disturbing what they do to the little calves :(

I became a vegetarian at the beginning of this year, I think February. I learned about factory farming and how animals were mistreated. When I ate meat I felt nauseated when I thought of where it came from. I thought of how what I was eating used to have a heartbeat. It used to be an individual living being and I couldn't handle the thought.
I do respect the natural food chain but I also have some for my own choices and I know I am living quite easily and happily without meat.
My mom is incredibly supportive. She makes me veggie meals and buys boca burgers, etc. She eats meat but never does it in front of me. I don't nag her about anything but she tries to do it out of respect.
No one else in my family is a vegetarian, except I think a cousin of mine who lives in England is. I haven't met her yet.

Nah, not rude so long as you just kindly explain to them why you will not eat the meat. And then offer it to their dad. I'm sure he'd like that! :D And heck, it would be a great oppurtunity to educate and enlighten others about your choice of becoming a vegetarian. :)

My fiancee and I are vegetarians. We became vegetarians for health reasons, and also because of factory farming.

Also, I really do not believe that humans are supposed to eat meat. We are the only species who cook our food before we eat it, and also our teeth are different than any other carnivore or omnivore.

I don't think that it is rude to turn down food at someone else's house... just tell them that you are a vegetarian. If we go over to someone else's house to have dinner, they make a dish without any meat... or we just sit and talk and get food afterwards ;)

I don't think it's rude at all, as long as you are polite about it. But if you get the chance, it's best to let them know you are a vegetarian beforehand so they can have something prepared. I would definitely skip any lecture about eating meat though, that would be very rude. If someone asks me why, I keep it short.
