We just obtained two new dogs from two different shelters. We adopted the first one, a 7 month old terrier mix, from a shelter two weeks ago. He's a very active, feisty little guy about 19 lbs. He is always wanting to play and be wild. Well, today we adopted a second dog, a 2 year old pomeranian mix, about 8 lbs, who seems to be very quiet and content with laying around. The 7 month old has been neutered for awhile now. The 2 year old pom was neutered two days ago. Now to the problem:

The 7 month old just wants to play with the pom. He dances around him, follows him everywhere and just can't seem to get enough. He's about double the size of the pomeranian and sometimes he can play rather roughly. The pom, however, just wants to hump the puppy. I'm not sure if it's a dominance thing or if he's just confused(he has his.. "boy parts" sticking out during this). I'm worried he'll hurt himself since he was just neutered and the cuts are still fresh. The puppy just bounces around trying to get away from the pom while he's doing this. The pom just will not stop at it. I've started to just use the spray bottle on him to get him off, this works, but the puppy won't stay away from him and he starts it up again. Will this behavior subside a little more with time, I'm assuming his hormones are still a little off due to the neuter being so recent. I'm just afraid he'll open his stitches or become injured in all this.

You should keep the newly neutered pom away from the other dog until he is completely healed. With the combination of things including the pom not up to par, you are setting yourself up for the pom to start getting aggressive with the pup.....trying to defend himself because he is not ready to be bothered.

After the pom is healed would be a better time to start introductions, and even then you probably shouldn't leave them alone together for a long while until you and they figure out what the heck is going on. :)

..

I am using a gate to keep them seperate right now. The humping was just way too distracting. About how long until the pomeranian is healed enough to begin a real introduction?

They told me to keep my puppy who was just neutered away from my other pup for 10 days after the surgery and to only take him on leash to go to the bathroom. They need time to rest and let the wound heal.

Well, he's got "surgical glue" down there, no stitches. They did the neuter at the shelter 2 days before I went in and adopted him. He has no followup with them. I'm going to try to take both boys to the vet on Monday since the pom needs a booster. I wish they'd mentioned that he needed to be seperated from other dogs though. I haven't dealt with a recovering neutered dog in 10 years so I don't really remember much about that.

Keeping them seperate will be a nightmare as our place is sort of small and both dogs want to be right with us while we are home or they start crying. I have one of those big ferret gates seperating the bedroom into two parts right now.

Yeah my little guy Bentley cried a lot the first day, but I just made sure to give him lots of attention and gave him lots of belly rubs and treats and he was fine after that being seperated from his little sis :)

Sounds like you are doing well. Yeah, it will be a pain keeping them separate, but probably the safest thing for both of them. Good luck, and keep us posted!
