Why does anyone, including "responsible purebred breeders" have a right to breed dogs, before every animal in the nation's animal shelters is adopted? It seems to me that with the philosophy presented on this thread, no one should deliberately try to create a litter of pups, as there are already more than enough unwanted dogs in the world waiting for homes. Think about it.
Because, sadly...being the "superior" race that we are, we have labeled dogs as property and not as living breathing things. Therefore, you're correct. Everyone has the right to breed dogs. It's not up to me to tell you, or the guy down the road with the horrible example of a lab, or the puppymills, NOT to breed. It is, however, up to me, and other pet lovers, to encourage people who SHOULDN'T breed, not to.
The right to breed and the ethics of making the right decisions are two VERY different things.
Responsible breeders breed to improve upon the integrity of their chosen breed. They breed by a code of ethics, and they follow a strict standard that is put in place for their breed.
Responsible breeders take full responsibility for the lives that they create, and any problems that may come from the breeding.
Responsible breeders place dogs on contracts stating that the pet quality dogs are not allowed to be bred. They keep in contact with puppy buyers through the lives of their puppies. They take back dogs from their breedings that for whatever reason must be given up. They simply are not the cause of the pet over population problem. Irresponsible breeders and owners are.
