We have a 14 wk old Victorian Bulldog who has a phobia about pooping. He doesn't mess in the house, but he won't go outside either. He last went about 1:30pm and it is now 10:30 pm and he still hasn't gone. He ate his dinner at 5:00 pm and has been outside at least 20 times since then. We take him to the same spot everytime but we can't get him to go for the life of us. When he does finally go we praise the heck out of him. Our trainer told us to do 10 minute intervals and if he doesn't go put him in his crate for 5 minutes and try again. Repeat until he goes. The problem is, he WANTS to be in his crate and when he is outside he just wimpers to get in, so I don't think this method is going to work for us (so far it hasn't). I was just outside with him for 45 minutes and I am very frustrated (which I am sure he can sense). Please can anyone help me through this??

He may be a just once a day dog ........... if he doesn't poop when he goes out to pee ( which I imagine is several times a day ) I wouldn't worry about it .... unless they look dry and he has a hard time eliminating.

Some dogs can actually be a little constipated. Reccommend following your trainers advice and if you're giving plenty of water he should be fine. You can help him out a little by feeding a bit of a Metamucil bar, apple flavored. I have adult dogs that come to me whose owners feed this to regularly. Ask your vet if this might be appropriate for your puppy first, just to "get things moving". Curious...whereare you from? Have never heard of a Victorian Bulldog. Have a nice evening.

I have the same problem today! My pup last went at about 3pm and it's now 12am. He usually goes poo around 3pm, then sometimes again around 6pm, then usually once more before bedtime. But this evening, nothing. Not really sure what's going on. I took him for a long walk and he didn't go once, very unusual for him!

He's been acting weird this last week or so, I'm pretty sure he's teething. It's also gotten cold and rainy here, so he doesn't want to be outside much. Puppies can be so confusing!

Thanks for your replies. He is definately frustrating in this department. He finally went this morning at 6:15 after breakfast. Some days he is great and we will get the 3 poops without any trouble and other days it seems impossible. Hopefully today will be better. Otch1 we are from Canada. The Victorian Bulldog is an offshoot of the English Bulldog, but they tend to have fewer health concerns than the English. Google it and you can get some more information.

Wrigley

Wrigley is now 8 months and generally goes twice a day but sometimes only once--I wouldn't worry as long as there doesn't seem to be any other problems!

May I ask what you are currently feeding him?

Also, he may be developing "stage fright" from being watched so often. With some dogs there is a fine line between praising enough to get the idea across and making too big of a deal about it and scaring them. Or he could just not need to go too much. I would suggest that if in the next week he hasn't started to develop more of a schedual to take him to your vet for a general check up, just to make sure he's not overly-constipated.

You can also try adding a spoonfull of plain canned pumpkin to his food, it helps to keep things even, so it will firm up loose stool and soften hard ones.

Thanks guys! We are feeding him Go Natural, about 1.5 cups a day (3/4 cup in the morning and 3/4 at night). I should say some days are great and he will go no problem, other days (like yesterday) it was a nightmare. The stool doesn't seem overly dry and he seems very healthy other than this. The vet told us that cutting him back from 3 meals a day to 2 meals a day (eating the same amount though), should regulate him. I guess we will have to just cross our fingers that this will sort itself out.
