I know where I live The Insurance company Gives a discount iF you have any kind of dog.I had 2 Dobermans when we first gor our policy now I have a German Sheperd and a Min pin.I think you should go with a min pin they are small but do not think that at all.Mine will try to take on a pitbull lol.He is almost as good a watchdog as my Sheperd is and is much more a breed that people that are scared of dogs can accept. Thanks Lisa

Well good choice williow.

Question about Goldens though: Will they protect their family if in danger? I thin I already asked this question but can't remember. I love Goldens so much, gorgeous dogs, nice , loyal, and very trainable. But I was just wondering about if they would protect me. I would never put a dog in harm but just asking. Sorry don't mean to take over the thread you made williow.

Willow there has been alot of good advice here on this forum. As dog owners we all know what our dogs will and will not do. I myself have a siberian husky who is still a baby and a 1 1/2 yr old pit bull. I know for a fact that if anyone were to break into my home I would be WELL protected as well as my family. Remember when looking for a dog find a breed that the family feels comfy with and not afraid. Dogs can sense this. Also dont ever train a dog to be aggresive because you will be inviting more problems that you want. Find a young adult as was suggested on this site. They are apt to be more trainable then say a 6 wk old pup. I did like the idea of a HUGE dog bowl in the front of the garage that was good.
To sum it all up find something that is compatable with your family and a dog that you can train the right way. Any dog that is shown loyalty and love will in return show the same. Good luck

hello what size of dog are you looking for? I have a mind a breed but am wondering how much exercise you plan on giving this dog, i assume it is an indoor dog, do you have children, how much are you willing to spend, how much are you willing to spend yearly for up keep, how much training do you plan on giving the dog, do you want it to protect the house when you are not home, there are alot of questions that i have not seen answers too.

good and bad breeds...

Since you are a first timer I would recomend a female. They are easyer to train and less dominant. For a breed I would recomend a doberman pinscher or a GSD because they are very obedient and will protect the family. Another breed is the standard schnauzer because they bark to warn you of intruders. The breeds to stay away from are blood hounds, basset hounds, new foundlands and bulldogs because they dont bark much. I do not recomend pit bulls because they can be unstable. mastiffs, rotties, malamutes, akitas, shar peis, and chows are for experienced owners.
