Hello everyone,

My house has been recently robbed and we are thinking of getting a guard dog. The problem is that, my parents (especially mu mum), are scared of guard dogs such as Pitbulls and Dobermans. She wants a golden retreiver or another silimilar breed. I was wondering if you guys had any suggestions to a good breed for a first time buyer, a guard dog, and a loyal family friend.

Thank you all so much!

Willow :)

A good alarm system would be MUCH MUCH better and cheaper, and would not pee in your house!!!!!!

We too have beeen robbed alot recently.Yes an alarm system is a great idea so is video surveillance. You can get very good cameras for about $150 they are small so no one notices they are there. You dont need a guard dog you just need a watchdog.Alot of breeds will bark when things are out of the ordinarry which is all you really need.If your mom is scared of dobes and such research breeds that are not so scary to her.Manchesters are great little watchdogs too.Manchesters I just love your dogs what can I say they are too cute for words.

I'm a first time dog owner. ^^ We're actually getting an alarm system to its just my dad is a bit paranoidish now and wants a dog to. I'm not complaing! Because I've been egging him to get a dog for a while now. I shall look into the alarm dogs. But, that just means we need a dog that barks a lot around starngers or suspicious type people, aye?

ANY breed of dog is protective of it's family. You will be doing a dog a big favour if you rescue one from a shelter. There are a lot of German Shepherd crosses (and purebreds) in shelters that would make a great family pet and be protective of your family. I adopted Nanook from our local shelter. She is a husky/gsd cross and she is much more protective of our house than my pitbull cross or my newfie  She really loves her home. If you get an older puppy or a younger adult dog you will not have to deal with housebreaking which can be stressful for a new family. www.petfinder.com is a good place to start looking for shelter dogs in your area. Remember that any dog that is included as part of the family will be very devoted to you and your home.

If you are a first time dog owner than do not go out and buy a attack dog just to feel safe.Yes most dogs can be watchdogs I have a min pin who is the greatest watchdog I have ever seen barks at even the smallest noise outside which is all you would need to feel safe and secure. He has great hearing will even hear when hes under covers in bed with me.Good luck in your search and remember most breeds can be great watchdog so pick one that suits your family and lifestyle. Thanks Lisa.

Sounds like you want a corgi.lol. They're VERY protective and yet they're little fur balls. My mom was scared of dogs too, until she saw Peanut at the shelter.

Besides getting a dog, there is an important thing you should do if you don't have them at your house, MOTION DETECTORS. Having these around your house so they light up if someone comes near is a good deterent. Also, make sure your shrubs, bushes aren't covering windows. These are 2 things that are important to help deter burglers.

Do you want a dog to actually train for protection? (You'd definitely need professional help with that, especially as a first time dog owner.)

Or just a dog to bark if someone comes around?

I would go golden... you have a family friend and yet a dog large enough to scare off with their bark. You wouldn't believe the number of strangers who come to my door, with me holding Chip's collar..... I know he's wagging his butt off to say " hi" but they've heard the bark and see the size. Most ask if he's friendly ( repair people ) , I just say if I tell him " It's O.K." ......I really wouldn't want the responsibility of a " Guard" dog.

Once Again

As I have mentioned before, no dog left outside will be any protection. If someone wants to burgle you all they have to do is give your dog some meat with a sedative in it (if you are lucky) or some poison in it (if you are unlucky).

Get a HUMONGOUS dog bowl, and print DUKE in black letters (Get a big yellow plastic bowl.) Put the bowl by the garage door with water in it. That is said to work. Also put one by a back sliding door.

lol... sorry, I missed that, Saje. I was talking to my boyfriend. That's what I get for trying to do two things at once.

Pretty much any dog will bark when someone comes around, will they not? I would just try to get a dog that fits your lifestyle.

Almost all dogs bark when a stranger invades their territory. My Border Collie loves everybody, but even he makes a huge racket if someone comes to the door. (And with all that snapping of teeth and growling, nobody would even think about coming in the house if we weren't home!)

Have you considered adopting a dog from a shelter? :)

Don't get a dog if it's purely for protection reasons-- it will let you down-- they need a lot of time and patience and in return they will protect you.

If you just set him at the house and expect him to guard perfectly, I mean, you're in for a surprise--especially if you're getting a puppy. They needs LOTS of time and patience.

Get a good alarm system. If you ARE serious about getting a dog that will protect if needed WITH LOTS OF WORK and PATIENCE, I'd recommend a German shepherd.
