Well, recently I tried adopting a Papillon. I know they are a very people-oriented breed so the shelter said we can't adopt because we can't leave them alone for 10 hours unless they've been used to that since they were puppies. I usually come home finished with all my homework so that I have free time from the time I come home to the time I sleep, which is about 5-6 hours. I was thinking of devoting all that time to playing/spending time with my Papillon if I had one. Do you guys think that's enough time? Also, if I were to buy from a breeder, how much is a reasonable price for a Papillon?

I really want a Papillon because they seem like such nice dogs, and I am thinking of adopting one somewhere else but if it's really not going to be good for them then I'll just adopt another breed. I was thinking of a Pomeranian, or something similar in size. I'm not too fond of the dogs with short hair but if I have no other choice then I guess those dogs are also okay.

Hmm.. well, have you checked the pound or shelter in your area? There are SO many dogs in need of homes that can be just as good as purebreds, that are getting put down daily.
There are so many types of dogs at shelters, too, small & big, and longhaired or short haired, but if I were you I would go for more of personality than breed. Some breeds are known 'generally' for certian characteristics, but could be totally oppisite of what most other dogs of their breed seem to be.
But good luck with finding your dog :] Hope that was some help

If you are still going to be gone for 10 hours I dont recommend you buy a puppy. It will be very hard to housetrain and socialize a pup if you are gone that long. Most breeders wouldnt consider you as a good home for a pup because of how long you will be gone for.I for one wouldnt, its not fair to a pup to be alone that long.If I were you I would reconsider a dog right now and go with a cat.

You either rescue a dog from being put down... or he stays alone for 10 hours as of right now with the potential to be less...... Hmmmm let's re-think this one

I would sooner have someone with a little more time adopt the dog.The OP said buying a puppy or did you not read that part.I was stating my opinion which I am allowed to do,if you dont like it dont read it.The OP asked if that would be too long for a pup and yes it would espeacially for a small breed with a small bladder.

ha ha .... read what part? He didn't say he was buying a puppy.. .he only mentioned of getting a Papillon... then inquired about the cost if he went to a breeder.... OR DID YOU NOT READ THAT PART? READ, READ, READ....

At the risk of getting involved in this, I humbly submit that 10 hours alone is rather long for any dog and suggest that the OP reconsider getting a dog if their present lifestyle means they're out of the house for about 10 hours each day, on a consistent basis.

Sorry but every dog I have ever had has been brought up doing ten hour days alone and has been just fine. Not many people would be able to own dogs if they couldn't be alone of rmore than four hours a day.

Go to a shelter and look. Somehting older may work for you, especially if its already potty trained:)
