And dont forget thyroid problems that can cause a person to gain weight uncontrollably if not carefully monitored.

I was watching the Early Show this morning on CBS while getting dressed, they said that part of the reason that we have obese children is because their favorite cartoons are used as promotions for junk food. IVe noticed that Subway (which is my fave place) has never once in my memory attempted to market to kids.

But yet I drive by Wendys and there is a giant SpongeBob SquarePants sitting on the roof inviting kids to enjoy a greasy burger, fries, and chocolate malt.

Even Elmo is marketing junk food even after his friend the Cookie Monster has started to teach eating sweets on a rare occassion and learning to choose healthier foods when eating.

Kids are not obese because cartoons market them. They are obese because their parents buy them the crap that makes the obese. They are obese because their parents allow them to sit in front of the tv all day and do NOTHING. Blaming cartoons and marketing towards children is just silly. The parents are the fools that buy it when they could say no go home and make a nice healthy home cooked meal.

Bubbatd ~ Do you live in Indiana? I'm about 45 min from the Indiana border. I love the biggest loser show. It's amazing the results those people get from all that hard work!

As far as GB, I know two people who had it done and both of them were pretty sick for a while afterwards. They lost a lot of weight, I thought they looked great and healthy, and to my knowledge didn't have other health problems (other than getting sick alot in the beginning). They have both gained back a lot of weight though. Thing is unless you "diet" and continue to eat right and exercise after you lose all of the weight, you will gain it right back. Lot of money wasted for some complications (if there are some) and to turn around in less than a year and be climbing right back to where you started!

Bubbatd ~ That's cool! My great grandmother lived in Indianapolis. My brother in law and his family live in Crown Point. We were actually just in Indianapolis at the Zoo w/ a little girls and family that was visiting from Co. in July. I think it's a little over an hour from where we live. I live in a small town about 5 miles outside of Urbana, Il.

I think it's part of the problem. Kind of like advertising and smoking used to target people that weren't old enough to buy cigarettes. I'm glad it's not advertised on tv anymore. There is a gene for obesity. Somewhere in a family tree another member of the family is obese. Genetics loads the gun and environment pulls the trigger.

Kids will sneak around to eat food, they can't be monitored 24/7. It's hard when they turn to 'comfort foods' to ease their feelings. It's a single life choice they have to make on their own and stick to it for more than 4 weeks at a time. Yo-yo dieting is where a lot of the wieght gets put back on.

Yes that is amazing to see the transformations. But there were 2 contestants on this season that didn't continue to lose weight after they left the ranch. But everyone else looked great!

Dixie, I can't say if this is the same in all schools around the country (actually I know I can't) but both of the school districts I attended had mandatory PE classes, with mandatory dress-outs and activities. You could actually fail gym for not dressing out. I was one of those "butch wierdos" who actually liked going to gym class and tearing around. I was devestated when I got to junior high and didn't have recesses anymore.

I think that schools need to start making the same contracts with Welch's, Dole, JuicyJuice, Sunmaid and Nature's valley that they have right now with Pepsi, Coke, Hostess and Nestle. If you offer it, they will drink it, and school's are so cash-strapped most of the time that finances really do play a large part in what they can and will offer to the students.

Bubba ~ I LOVED the Zoo. I love dolphins so it was extra cool to be able to see them there.

We haven't gone to the museum yet, our girls are only 1 1/2 and 3 1/2 so I figured they would still be too little. We took them to the Discovery museum in Bloomington Il. They have lots of things to do for little ones.

I would love to move to Indianapolis. I know my Husband wouldn't mind as his favorite team is the Colts!! (which would be why he wanted to name our dog Manning!)

It is the parents responsibility to teach their children proper eating habits. No yo yo dieting. proper nutrition from the start. if you can't trust your kids with junk food in the house then stop buying it. They can only get so much of it outside the house. Don't allow them to sit in front of the tv from the time they get home to the time they go to bed 365 days a year. There is no need for "yo yo dieting". Don't let it get out of control in the first place. THAT is the parents job.

I know some people have genetic disorders and I said that in one of my earlier posts. I know thyroid is a big one and diabetes also. People with those problems aren't in the same catagory as people who just let themselves go.

I love the biggest loser. I think I know which two you are talking about. Nick and that girl with the short dark hair that was the second one to leave. Nick was a tool but that girl had a stress fracture and probably hasn't been able to work out as much as the others. However, I expected to see a bigger difference in her than that.
