Does anyone know how long I should have to freeze fresh deer meat?

Ben's co-worker gave us a whole heart and liver and they've been in the freezer for about 2 weeks now.

I have a related question. When my husband had his deer processed I asked him to ask for knuckle bones for the dogs and the processor said that the bones were too soft for dogs so they never gave them out. Is this true? I've never heard this before.

Hmmm I have never heard that...I actually have deer bones in my freezer right now and have had no problems giving them to my guys. I know lots of other dog owners that also give deer bones without a problem.

it's too bad they won't give them out or even sell them cheap - I'm sure much is thrown away that could be put to good use.

Here, if you can catch the hunter before they return the bones to their hunting spot, you can get the bones.

We've heard all kinds of crazy stuff about giving our dogs the bones - everything from the hazards of feeding raw to "your dogs are going to turn wild and kill every animal they see". We even had a friend of a hunter friend make it a point to let us know that we are risking turning our dogs into unpredictable wild beings that can't be trusted around other animals. :lol-sign:

We have had zero problems and we give venison bones of all kinds.

We freeze our venison for a couple of weeks to kill any parasites, but, it is said that 48 hours is sufficient. With the variety of parasites, I err on the side of caution and try for at least two weeks. Longer if I can keep the dogs at bay.

Thanks good to know about the freezing and such. I'm not a huge venison fan myself so I'm sure some of the meat in the freezer now will go to the kids.
