Fire dept was just out...**dead critter pic**

My poor neighbors!!!
The fire dept just pulled up and checked out their entire house because they had a funny smell. So did mine. It was a skunky smell. Their house was fine, my house is fine...

But my dogs on the other hand...REEK of skunk. The culprit of the smell, the recently deceased and seriously demolished skunk.

Now for the fun part, I called animal control, they'll be here at 7 AM to remove stinky from the yard. They asked me if it needed to be contained I told them "No it's definitely dead"...

I have to provide my dogs shot records to prove they are vaccinated against rabies tomorrow morning as well.

So I feel bad, scared the hell out of my poor neighbor who thought they had a fire in their house, and all because a skunk wandered in the wrong **** yard.

Any suggestions on how to get this reeking f***ing smell out of the dogs?

Well . . . hmmm . . . . I think there's a formula posted on here, either in General Chat or Grooming.

I will confess to taking a shortcut one time. Shiva had gone out and gotten herself skunked late one night and there was nothing in the house to get the smell out, plus I wasn't up for tackling her in that little bitty shower at midnight when I had to be out of the house and on the way to work by 7 a.m. . . . .

So I Febreezed her.

It worked :D

I did wash her when I got home, though.

ha, mine did the same thing two nights ago. She's in the garage because we're selling our house, hard to do showings with that in here. But I washed her right away with peroxide, baking soda and dish soap. Got rid of most of it, but she had a lot around the eyes and muzzle and that was hard to clean.

It cut it down tremendously, but it's not gone yet. i'll try cleaning that part again today and see what it does.

Ewwwwww. That looks definitely stinky and rotting. How long has it been dead? I can't imagine the smell!

:rofl1::rofl1:
It's not "rotting" exactly, they killed it last night at around midnight to 1 AM...decomposing by now, true, but it's just that mangled from the dogs and muddy.

Animal control still isn't here to collect Stinky and get my info, I wish they'd hurry, I'd love to lock the dogs out in the yard so I can breathe in my house again. :rofl1:

I tried the peroxide/baking soda/soap thing last night around 1:30, while donning elbow length dish gloves and armed with a power sprayer hose. It kind of knocked the smell down a little but apparently he got a good dose right to the face.

Nature's Miracle makes a skunk shampoo that people say works really good.

I've heard of using tomato juice. That's suppose to work. You could use Johnson's no more tears baby shampoo on the face, I guess. What a disaster! I feel for you. I wonder what killed the skunk. I hope animal control hurries up. And do they do an autopsy to determine if it had rabies? You might want to spary Chlorox on the area where he is lying, once he's removed.

I don't think I need to wonder what killed the skunk, considering it's all chewed up and at least one dog was sprayed in the face...lol.

I called them back, they won't be here until between 9-10, and I got up early to make sure I'd be up when they showed up, dammit.

They will do a brain biopsy to test for rabies on Stinky out there and let me know.

Brutus got sprayed in mouth when he was young. I used a tomato juice, baking soda, dawn and I think possibly peroxide was in it, conglomerate the e vet gave me. Some was on his face and chest. The stuff helped his body, but it didn't help his breath tho, It was disgusting. He foamed and frothed for awhile. Poor guy.

Well, after they picked up the skunk, the AC officer informed me it would be tested for rabies. If it is positive, even though my dogs are vaccinated, we are looking at a potential 45 day quarantine.

I don't have time for this, so please, pray that Stinky wasn't rabid.

45 days?? Even with the vaccinations? That's crazy. There was apparently a bat turned into the human society the other day that tested positive for rabies. I really hope that stinky comes out negative!!

It's home quarantine because they've been previously vaccinated.

Word to the wise, GET YOUR RABIES SHOTS! Had he not been vaccinated, and stinky came up positive, he would be euthanized and tested.

I got a call from the Health Department to ask about it. Lacey won't need quarantine because she's had 3 vaccinations vs the 1 Lestat has had, only Lestat if stinky comes back positive.

AND the scare of the day. Lestat came in from the yard limping on a back foot and being rather assholish and irritable. I decided to investigate and made him lay down on the floor. I touched his foot, and he kind of snarled at me. So I flipped him on his back so I could look at the pad without touching and found a HUGE nail all the way to the head in his foot. Just like this:

So I yanked it out with a lot of doggy protest and hooked him up with some penicillan. This dog is having a real bad freaking week, let me tell you.

Truer words have never been spoken Renee. Oh and you're right, if this EVER happens again, I'm burying the **** thing rather than calling AC and doing things the legal and right way. I think it would have been worth me driving to Home Depot and buying a shovel.
