Renee, Cleila Kruel did more damage to the Fila breed than anyone else for the sake of the almighty $$$. There were never any "Black Filas" around until the 70s...why? All of the sudden the black gene in the fila popped up again after never before being seen? oh yea, they realized how much money there was to be had by breeding a big black dog with the legendary temperament of a fila...not to mention that a huge black dog running around in the brazilian sun for hours after cattle just sounds insane. The mix breeders have come up with an equally insane story for that too though..."there were 2 types, one used for farm work and the other that sat home protecting the farm while everyone else was working"...LMFAO, I guess no one has been to a real working farm in harsh climates...no work, no food, and def no procreation, those dogs would have put themselves right our of existence. Now, I gotta say they are nice looking dogs and they may make a nice pet but they are to the Fila what the American Bully is to the game bred American Pitbull terrier....one is bred as an athlete with a purpose and the other...well, looks kinda cool but looks NOTHING like the original.

My friend who spent a good bit of time in Minas Gerais (and some time with Clelia) did say that the dark dogs were a rarity, but they were there. One of the comments she made about Clelia's writing the blacks -- and the pies -- out of the standard was that Clelia hated black dogs and that she'd tried very hard to get a piebald from the fazendas, but they wouldn't part with them. My friend found the same thing. She got lucky, though, as one of her pups she brought back with her threw a litter with a piebald.

The dark dogs can be handy prowling through the jungle ;)

Clelia did do harm in some ways, but she also had a part in the preservation of the Fila outside Minas Gerais. Like anyone else who is passionate -- and has a large ego -- it's something that we have to expect and hope that as generations pass others down the line will continue separating the wheat from the chaff.

I feel very fortunate to have been able to spend some limited time with this woman because she's very private and prefers to stay in the background, and I don't blame her one bit for that, not as nasty as Fila politics can get! I got to meet one of her dogs -- a spectacular bitch.

Of course, if I had my way, I'd be down in Minas Gerais . . . and might never come back :)

Cleilia did not believe that the black dogs were filas???? she was a CBKC breeder, the dog could have been purple and had wings and they would call it a fila if they thought that would make money..the only standard that leaves out black is the CAFIB standard and trust me that woman hates CAFIB with a passion as does her son.
a brindle dog is by far better camouflaged in the jungle than a black dog would be.
I am sure the woman was a wealth of information, did she by chance tell you which breed she and other specific breeders used to get those "new" looks, sizes, type, variation in temp, colors etc.?
I'm sorry if I am out of line here but that lady truly was a piece of work and thank goodness that her son is taken as a joke within the breed.

if you have not seen her name pop up then you are looking in the right places. She is the one who introduced the mixed bred fila to the United States and the one responsible for the many puppy mills for fila in the U.S...she sold to anyone with a few dollars, anyone. you will hear the byb touting..."my dogs come from cleila kruel"...#1 sign to run, not walk the other way.

I have never heard of this breed before! I think River is just beautiful. She has a very fantasy female look to her, it's hard for me to explain. :p Something lovely!

Brutus is a camping Fila, I have never regretted getting him! I noticed you have not spoken well of any breeders here in the US, Fila Arena.

I never knew Clelia had any mixed breed dogs. I was told, by her, she was extremely against mix breeding of Filas and was very picky who she sold her dogs to. But, I never met her in person.

Oh dont get me wrong there are some very good breeders here in the U.S, some of the best as a matter of fact....there is forca kennels, personal body guard kennels, de la luna has some nice dogs, leoas de chacara has some nice dogs (and some very nice ones coming), poca de onca used to have some very nice dogs.....There are some nice breeders out there with some very good quality dogs out there...some very private breeders are also coming out with some excellent dogs as well...you have to look long and hard to find them as they dont advertise but their dogs are better than anything you will find from the ones spending lots of money on websites and such.
I doubt very much that cleilia would come right out and tell you that she sells to ANYONE with $$$$ or that her dogs are infact mixbred... I cant even imagine how that conversation would have went. Now...dont get me wrong, I think that some of those dogs are amazing, at the last CAFIB show there was an all breed tt test (and it was hard core) the most impressive dog was a neutered male from CBKC stock, nerves of steel and super hardcore...very impressive. I have also seen some very impressive black dogs that were very hardcore and unfortunately that is not the norm. Now remember I have also seen some impressive GSDs but that doesnt make them filas anymore than a shutzhund trained beagle makes it a GSD. Some great dogs but not nec. great filas. Please dont take it as I am being mean or rude, I am just stating a fact and there is just no way to make that sound sweet.
