Windows 7 will be released in the summer of 2009. Just wanted to see how many of you are planning on switching from XP/Vista to this new OS? I use Vista on my desktop computer and Windows XP on my laptop. So far, I only had problems with Vista. Service Pack 1 did fix some issues, but there are still a lot of programs that are not fully compatible with Vista. Also, it consumes a lot of resources and this is the main reason I still use XP on my laptop. To me, Vista looks like another Windows ME - buggy and incomplete. They claim Windows 7 will be more responsive and consume less resources even though it is based on Vista. Let's just hope that we do not have to upgrade our hardware again to take advantage of the new features that will be added. I guess we will just have to wait and see.

Nope... I'm a Mac girl, through and through! :D You'd have to pry my OS X out of my cold, dead fingers!

I'm willing to give it a good fair shot, Vista was just junk when I was on it, but I have heard good things about Windows 7.

I'll switch to it after it gets SP1. Just like any new operating system, one shouldn't switch until the kinks have been ironed out of it.

Are you talking about Windows 7 Beta 1 edition? I think that is only available to developers who test the system and report of any problems. The official release is in the summer.

Don't you think that Macs are overpriced? I know they look cool but c'mon, are they really worth that much? The only reason why there are not as many viruses for Macs as there are for the Windows machines is because around 80% of people use Windows and the audience to target is greater. Mac OS is just as vulnerable as Windows, but it looks prettier :).

Overpriced? For what I do, no way. I'm a graphic designer, and there isn't a PC out there that can match a Mac for design work. I don't really give a rat's behind if they look cooler than PCs, what I care about is that my professional design programs are created with Macs in mind.

Apple's service plan is top notch, better than anything PCs can offer IMO. My mac runs faster and better than any PC I've seen, and yes - it's lighter and prettier than PCs. But that's neither here nor there. ;)

So, before you paint me to be a Starbucks sipping, Birkinstocks wearing, Sweater vest wearing sheep that only uses a Mac because of the ads and the hype.. might be wise to think about what made Macs so great in the first place, and that there are some professions out there (namely the graphic design world) that runs almost exclusively on Macs. :)

No, Macs are not just as venerable as windows. Because they're based on OpenBSD (I think? Could be FreeBSD), they naturally have a better permissions system than Windows does. This is something that windows is trying to change... problem is, doing so breaks a lot of older programs that were made assuming they had higher system privileges than they should have had. Personally, I think this is a great thing.

Also, I believe they're trying to make Win7 modular, so you only need to install what you need.

My company is a Gold Microsoft Certified Partner. So, we have a rather vested intrest in moves "The Company" makes with its product release plans....

Lets just say I was none to pleased when we went to the last briefing in Malvern where they told us about the new advanced schedule for desktop OS releases. They are back to the "one every 30 months" plan. :( Vista is juts getting its kinks out and more importantly, my customers are getting comfortable with it. Don't go and force me to do something else new this fast. Not in this economic environment....

Now, Server 08'? Awesome stuff. Totally dig the ability to install a NO GUI version, just a command prompt. Our web server FLIES now. Built in VM capability is a plus. Sent a message to the server team, gave em an atta boy' and told them to leave it alone for a few years.

The number of viruses for Macs has risen drastically over the past few years. Mac OS is based on UNIX, and if you run Windows as a limited user, you'll be just as safe as with a Mac. Most viruses come through Internet Explorer anyways. Use Firefox instead. If you run as an Admin, that's where the trouble starts. Most people don't bother and run as an Admin all of the time. With UNIX, you can only do so much before switching to a root account.

I hear you, but it is better for people to switch to Windows 7 if it is more stable and faster than to stay with Vista, which has proven not to be a very good OS. Maybe they should let us upgrade from Vista to Windows 7 for free for all the hardships that they've caused us :)!

Just interested, what professional design programs do you use on a Mac that you can't run on Windows?

She never said they won't run on Windows. Sure they run on Windows, but they run better on a Mac. Using them on a Windows machine is just too clumsy for design work. The workflow on a Mac is very seamless.

I have an iMac and two Windows laptops - one with XP and one with Vista. They all work just fine, but the iMac is the one with all the design programs installed.

I have Vista on my laptop and find it really annoying. I might try 7 when it comes out but with upgrades this is finnally working properly. :)

You're as wrong about that as you are about Pit Bulls being good guard dogs ;)

The architecture makes for a much more difficult viral attack. Apple also opens it's pocketbook on a regular basis, offering prize money to anyone who can come up with ways to exploit weaknesses in the system. Then they fix it instead of just putting a huge kluge over it.

I've been running computers back to DOS, and, like Sizzle, Mac has totally convinced me. There's not that much of a price difference, either, if you compare Apples to *similiar* PCs. The price difference comes in the low end trash machines that are marketed, and they aren't remotely comparable in performance to a Mac. They're just disposables.

You can walk out of an Apple store with a machine that's ready to do what you want it to do, safely and reliably. For a Windows machine, you need to have someone like Puck or Scob nearby to have anything comparable.

RedHotDobe is right - the design programs run on Windows, but Windows does a **** poor job of running them. For someone who has to design on a deadline (which means ALL professionals), keyboard shortcuts are a must. Mac's shortcuts are clustered together, reduces finger strain. RHD is so right - designing on a Mac is... seamless, smooth and svelte.

At the print shop I used to work, the people who bought the design computers were idiots and got PCs - they weren't designers, they were management goofs. It was painful to work on them... the programs were clumsy and slow, my hand ached after a day's work from the finger strain.
