That doesn't even make sense....even if we went by popular vote...Alaskan's votes wouldn't count more because there's less of them. The acreage doesn't get to vote. Just each person.

Well, Alaska has one rep. Their population is roughly 750,000.
    New York has 29 reps.
    750,000 x 29 = 21,750,000

Population of New York State is roughly 20,000,000.

    So it's about right.

First, size has nothing to do with how many electoral ores or reps ones gets, it the amount of people that live there. Size is irrelevant.

Second, New York, while not massive like Alaska or Texas, is not a tiny state size wise.

This is the problem with entitlements. All they see is the word FREE. They have no idea what that actually entails. All these people say they are getting Obama money, well it isn't actually coming out of HIS pocket.

The people that want the free don't know what it is like to have 50% of their income that they busted their ass for taken away and handed out to people who aren't working.

And I **** sure guarantee I would be a hell of a lot more willing to donate money to causes when the government wasn't deciding for me what kind of corrupt individuals or programs it went to.

AND our gov't does not have a good track record for taking care of programs. America has nearly 9 times the population of Canada. There is a big difference in taking care of 35 million people and taking care of 300 million people.

Ok, so take free health care.

Make that instead that I pay into the largest insurance pool possible. One that can bargain for me to lower costs of drugs and treatments. One that can't dump me if I get sick. One that would actually take me with a pre-existing condition.

    Yep. I'm still taking that.

I think we (Americans) have an irrational fear of government. Somehow "no taxation without representation" became "no taxes." Those are VERY different statements to me.

One more. When discussing state size, don't. Just don't. Don't even look at those pretty red-blue maps.

This is better. It replaces area with population.

This is based on a polling projection, so Fl might flip, but it seems right otherwise. There are ones from 08 with county data and a red- purple- blue scale, but there does not seem to be a new one out yet. Also, reading the shades of purple is hard for me. :p

You might. Most people probably would not. So what's your solution, let people who can't find a job starve?

People think a lot of stupid things, so I'm sure plenty of people actually do think they're getting this stuff for "free", but I don't think that's the case with most voters.

Socialized medicine, education, etc. is working in MANY countries. That's undeniable. Their economies are strong, crime rates are low, unemployment is low, they're making strides in education, science, medicine. People there are happy with the way things are. That's just as much, if not more, incentive for people than $$$$$. People KNOW they pay much higher taxes in socialized countries. They just happen to think it's worth it. Not unemployed people, people on welfare, drug addicts, people abusing the system...successful doctors, lawyers, teachers, business owners in the community. They're willing to pay A LOT in taxes to further education, medicine, science, to give people who work hard and still can't afford privatized medicine, a chance.

I'm not saying it's better or worse than capitalism or fiscally conservative, republican American ideas. But it's what the majority of people want. And it's not because they're stupid or misinformed, it's because they value a lot of things over holding onto all their income, tooth and nail.

Let people who can't find a job starve. Let their kids drop out of school to work, because education is a privilege. Let the crime rates rise because of increase in poverty, but if we give everyone guns they can protect themselves. Let people die of diseases, people not be able to afford to vaccinate their children. No one can afford healthcare except the wealthy, so why allow anyone except the wealthy go to college, become doctors, search for cures for cancer and AIDS?

I have been working full time since I was 13 (full time meaning 40-80hrs/week when not school, multiple part time jobs totaling minimum 20 hours a week while in school) and paying my full share of taxes for the last decade as an adult who is out of shool and I support universal health care. Nothing free about it. Step down off the high horse.

Why is it suddenly scary or a new idea that some of us pay for other people's healthcare? I've been paying for other people's free healthcare my whole working life. Up until now it's just been called "my health insurance premium going up to cover all the people who went to the ER and got free health care despite not having insurance." At least now they can go to a regular doctor and earlier where it won't cost as much. :)

Oh man this is why I stay away from politics LOL. I totally get not wanting to help people who don't deserve it. I don't get willing to sacrifice the people who can use the help because of it. I understand not trusting the government to spend it the right away. What's the alternative though? Get another kind of privatized institution like insurance companies, that will care more about how much $$$ they make in the end rather than how to help people? No thanks.

People need to stop with the underhanded insinuations.

Last night I went to bed as "me", and yet today I'm stupid, I'm a racist, I'm backwards, I'm for letting poor people starve to death while I sit back and each popcorn and watch a movie..............I could go on.

In fact, I had a very nice facebook private message from someone telling me he/she is surprised at how I can be a college-educated woman and be an ignorant and racist upper-class bitch. All because I voted for Romeny. It seems a vote for Romney equals bringing back slavery, putting poor people to death in gas chambers, and wanting to brand homophobic epithets onto gay people. And if a college-educated woman could do such a thing, it was a complete waste of time and money to even bother with an education to squander it on someone so stupid.

As for college, I busted my ASS in the classroom and on the soccer field to get those scholorships that paid for my tuition and much of my rooming and food. I busted my ASS in college to keep those scholorships. When I lost my athletic scholorship due to a career-ending injury, I got two jobs, 1 at a local hospital and the other teaching drivers' education. I just wanted it to be known that I didn't have mommy and daddy hand me money every Sunday to go play.

This. I can pay in higher taxes or I can pay in higher premiums because people who don't have health insurance use public hospitals emergency rooms as their primary care facility.

And I've been working steadily since I was 13.

Me, too. It's not free. But with or without universal health care and with or without the government involved, those of us who work for a living pay for other people's health care. There's nothing new under the sun, I've just been subsidizing other people's care primarily through my insurance premiums instead of my taxes up until now.

I've never liked the use of the words capitalist, socialist, communist, etc. Economics and government is much more complicated then those simple terms.

I just love how people who think that wanting a safety net for society are all freeloaders. Or that people who lose their job and need to be on welfare for more than a week feel so entitled to it. People using the system are shamelessly are not that common. People who fall through the cracks and don't have a lot of options, are.

People who don't know any better. Who don't have the surrounding, support, will, or goal to do better. Who stopped going to school in 6th grade and nobody cared. What do we do with them? Let them starve? Build a low class ghetto we send them to? I'm sorry, I don't want to live in a society like that. I'm glad I don't. And my cut is not nearly 50%, maybe 30.
