I got the dreaded phrase thrown at me today!!!!!!!

"IT'S ONLY A DOG!!!" Well, my dogs aren't ONLY dogs, they are my children, my friends and my most beloved companions!!

Anyone else hate this phrase??????

I don't like that phrase either. I feel the same way. I never had children, but I do know my dogs/cats would still be important to me. Some people just don't understand until they have their own pets, and even then, sometimes they just don't get it.

Yeah I hate it to... I seem to get it a lot from people. Especially when I tell them that there are major differences between grocery store foods and premium foods, like Ole Roy and Canidae.

I don't have kids yet either, and I will never put my dogs in the same category as my children, but they are definitely a big part of the family..

I think this raises a good point. In fact, this was one of the problems in my relationship that is ending. I grew up with dogs, love them like members of my own family...my girlfriend had never had a pet before, and although she loves them very much, she thought I was "weird" with them....that I went overboard.

Kind of scares me a little bit because maybe I'm too crazy about them? I mean, my mom was exactly the same way with our dogs growing up. She loved them like her own kids. That is how I am with my beagles.

She thought it was very strange how much I missed them when we would go away for the weekend, etc.

I don't like it. I've had people look me straight in the eye, say, "It's just a dog" and start laughing. It takes a lot to get me to the point that I want to beat the crap out of someone, and when people do that I really could just slug 'em.

I hate people who say that to me. Chico is my child and he sure as hell will be treated like one. I spoil him and go out of my way for him and people think I'm crazy. I would choose my dog over many things.

My dogs are like children to me, the bond we have is incredible, might sound sad but I think I communicate with them better than I do with most people!

My mom says that to me...She doesnt dislike Katie, but she thinks I go overboard. She's constantly saying "I hope your not like one of those people who treats your dog like a kid, its disgusting." Then I tell her "If I love and care for my dog this much, imagine how I'll be with my kids, this should be encouraging not disgusting."
I miss Katie anytime we arent together, I take her with me everywhere, sometimes I eat at out-door restaurants so she can sit outside w/ me.
BTW- They just passed a ordinance in a neighboring city that dogs can be at any restaurant as long as they have outside seating. And you can take your dog into the shops and on the strip at Clematis. (which is downtown West Palm Beach). Yay! 1 point for the dog lovers.

I hate that saying so much, it makes me very angry. Next year I'm going to college but I'm staying at home as I don't want to leave Casey. As a result of this I have had so many people saying things like 'why don't you move away from home, you can still see Casey at weekends. She's just a dog, she doesn't need you'. I hate it when they say it, I can't even begin to describe how much she means to me and I will not ever leave her just so I can live on campus.

I too hate that saying, my dogs are a very important part of my life, they give me joy that is different from my own "children".....they don't ask for money.....they don't care what I"m wearing, ......in alot of ways, dogs are the best kinds of kids you can have.....I miss them when they're not around, I love the snuggle time I get with them, and they make me laugh.....I think those people who say that " it's just a dog", are really missing out of the special relationship you can have with a pet....too bad for them

Yes, I hate it.
I feel sorry for people who say that. They have no idea that I like my dogs better than I like them. :p

LOL. Amen to that RD. My ex thought my obsession with dogs was strange to say the least...imagine his surprise when he started realizing that I loved the dogs just a *bit* more than him!

The new boyfriend, thankfully respects my passion for showing dogs and canine-kind. Sure, he doesn't *understand* dog shows, but he has a passion himself (flying- he's a pilot), so he recognizes the emotion.

I've managed to shut most people up (and give them some real food for thought), when I say- "I found my passion when I was 8 years old. I know I will be happy for the rest of my life, showing dogs, and being surrounded by what I love. It's a shame you haven't found your passion yet, but when or if you do, I bet you'll learn to respect mine."

I really do feel sorry for people like that- since when did love ever need to be quantified or limited?

I don't like the phrase, but I can't say I hate it. I came to realize a long time ago that the true dog lovers are the lucky ones - those other people haven't and may never experience the closeness we can feel with our pets. They don't understand the bond, the trusting love we share - a love you just can't find with another human, because a dog is not capable of the lies and deceit that people are.

So those who say "it's just a dog" are more to be pitied than to be hated. They just don't know what they're missing.

On the other hand, I've seen a lot of people who swear they love their animals, talk about the bond they have, and yet dump them at some point because they found a person to be with or they're moving or the pet got sick and they don't want to spend money on it. A person has to prove they love their pets - the words aren't enough.

I hate it because it often followed with abuse of a dog or it is part of someones arguement to justify dog abuse.

I usually retort with "Yeah and your only a dumb A$$" that gets me some odd looks. The truth hurts sometimes.
