So those who say "it's just a dog" are more to be pitied than to be hated. They just don't know what they're missing.
That's exactly it!

I also hate that phrase, however I know it's coming from someone who is really missing out on something!

I don't like that phrase much.

Before I brought Mojo home, my entire family was against my getting a pit bull mix. One of the things they tried to do was to offer to get me any kind of purebred puppy I wanted (i had been interested in Tibetian Terriers). I told them No. I had my heart set on Mojo, even though I had to wait 3 months before I could bring him home. One of the things my mom said to me was "It's just a dog! It shouldn't matter what kind of dog you get! They're all the same!"

I got SO mad at her. We were in a coffeehouse and I got up threw down my napkin, and spit out "It's not JUST a dog. It's MY dog. Not YOUR dog. Not the grandkids' dog. Not anyone else's dog but MINE... and this Pit Mix is the dog *I* want. He is NOT just a dog... and you will SEE THAT when I bring him home!" I then went and left her to go wait out at the car.

After I did bring Mojo home, and after a few months, my mom watched Mojo for a night while I went out with friends. When i got home, she asked me all sorts of questions about how Mojo had behaved ("What did it mean when he laid his head on the couch? Was he okay?" "He didn't bark or make a sound all night... is he feeling okay?" "He just followed me around, didn't get in the way, but he just watched me... why?") I answered all of her questions, and then asked teasingly "So... is Mojo just a dog? Any ol' dog?"

She frowned and said that wasn't fair. I pressed her for an answer. She finally reluctantly admitted that I had been right.. "Mojo isn't just a dog. He's obiviously something more to you... He's... a good dog for a pit bull."
