This is another one of those breed recommendations. I wrote awhile ago but this is for my stepfather. I want to gather some information to help him and my mother pick a dog best for their situation.

Here goes:

My stepfather has been wanting a dog for awhile. My mother wouldn't allow him to adopt a dog until my mother found homes for her cats or some of her elderly cats passed away. Now since that has happened, my mother is looking for a dog for my stepfather. Or rather, I am helping my mom in this search. (She just started in the real estate market and I am a recent college graduate trying to get a job in government) He loves all dogs and would be quick to adopt, instead of doing a little research. He has experience training a Rhodesian Ridgeback. My parents have a huge house on a lake and my stepfather works on boats quite a bit. He seems to be interested in golden retrievers since he bonded with the next door neighbor's golden, Jake. My mother would like for him to have a smaller dog and she saw some smaller goldens. I think my mother saw some female Goldens since they are a little bit smaller. He wants a dog that doesn't mind water and boat rides, going to the boat store with him and following him around. He likes playing fetch with dogs and wants more of a medium/large dog. (My mother hasn't been around large dogs since childhood and they were german shepherds. She has been around pekingese and poodles) The biggest thing is it needs to be a dependable breed and not like a husky where it will run away off leash. We want to rescue an adult. Right now, Golden retriever is at the top of the list. If not a golden, what else could they look into?

What is their living situation? Activity level?

Golden definitely does come to mind, but there are a TON of breeds out there that are loyal and friendly.

I was thinking of labs also, since they will be alot easier to find.

Their living situation is a 3/2 home, that is probably around 2000+ square feet with a huge backyard. They have a canal going to a huge lake in the backyard. It is just him and my mother living there and a 13 year old cat. The cat has been around dogs for awhile and doesn't seem to pay mind to them. My stepfather is pretty active and would take the dog on a walk 2-3 times a day. We are looking for a dog that will accompany him to work each day, since he works around a boat yard and can do as he pleases. They have an indoor office there as well. The dog would rarely have any time home alone. My parents have occasional grandchildren around, my stepbrothers 2 kids but that is rare.

I did the K9 breeds thing but wondering what dogs like boats, water, and following around their owners.(and not just when the owners have food)

Labrador Retriever. Sounds like a perfect match. I know from experience.

But I am also sure there are many dogs that would fit perfect in that environment!

I know a contractor that takes his lab to work with him everyday, and that is building houses. lol I am sure they would love to "accompany" while working around the water. :D

Best of Luck.
Julie.

Edit: If you are looking for an adult dog, I would look for a well socialized dog that is not afraid of new experiences or you might have a problem with boats. Look for a dog that is not shy and doesn't cower at sounds or movements. Unless of course you are looking to "rehabilitate" and work on problems.

If there's a vote for a slightly smaller dog than Goldens, maybe one of the larger spaniels or a spaniel mix? Spaniels are really obsessively affectionate too - the problem you usually have with them is escaping their clutches, not running them to ground a la huskies or hounds. The English Springers are beautiful dogs, more like miniature setters; the Brittanys are not so pretty (bit more workmanlike than the Springers) but also reasonably sized.

look into any of the water retreiving breeds, theyll love to swim, love to follow him round and love to play fetch, a lab is definatly the first to mind, i dont know how goldens are with water but there another absolutly wonderfull breed, most of the spaniels are great for this kind of lifestyle (and arnt as big as a lab or golden) id look into springer, english cocker or britneys...
even a standard poodle (there origional purpose is a water retreiving breed.)
there tends to be alot of poodle, retreiver and spaniel mixes in shelters also (and some pures, if your going through a purebred rescue youll be nble to find ANY breed...)

I'd definately say golden retreiver. They are absolutely perfect for the situation you're describing. You seem to want a dog that's more clingy or velcro-ish, so I'd go with a male.

I think a Golden Retriever would be an excellent companion and fits the guide lines that you are stating.

I would not get a Lab as they seem to be a bit more hyper and slightly harder to train.

I believe that the male/female Golden stuff is crap. I have seen females that are major velcro dogs and I have seen males that are very independent. It all depends on the dog. Since you are looking for a smaller Golden I'd say to go for a female and get an English Golden Retriever. English Goldens are smaller than the typical Golden. Although they are smart and attentive by nature training is still needed. You will need train your dog to be good while offleash etc. They typically love water and swimming, but again there are exceptions.

Good luck with your search! Let me know if I can help you further.
