my dogs have free reign of the furniture. they don't have to ask. but there is a no chewie law. i don't want to wake up with raw bones on my pillow.

i love having dogs in bed. luce chooses to sleep on the floor during the summer and i really miss her.
This :)

No chewies on furniture, otherwise no problem.

Sierra sleeps in a chair at the foot of the bed when Matt and I are both here. If one of us is away, she cuddles in bed.

Also, first thing in the morning we say "good morning Sierra" and that's her invite to jump up on the bed and smother us with kisses :) It's our nice little morning ritual.

Meg sleeps in bed with me every night, and has one ottoman that sits under a window for her. Other than that, she isn't allowed on the furniture. If I'm watching TV in the evening, I'll put a blanket down and let her jump up, but it's invitation only and only on the blanket. The hair is a bit too much for the other people who use the furniture.

If you let your dog sleep with you he'll likely form an unhealthy attachment, and may start experiencing intense anxiety when you're not around. As a result, he may start barking and howling when you're at work. It's really best for dogs to have their own space--a den, if you will--and to keep to it at night.
Thankfully I bring Meg to work, so no need for barking or howling then. Oddly, it is the human who seems to have formed the unhealthy attachment. Meg handles it just fine on the rare occaisions that I go somewhere she isn't allowed, but I tend to fret and worry the whole time.

Hi there,

I've been tempted to let my dog sleep in my bed with me because it's so hard to say no when he gives me those big puppy dog eyes! But I resist because I know the consequences aren't worth it. Best of luck!
Can you please back this up with some credible evidence. I will need to show it to my dog so that she can start barking and howling and develop temprement trouble.

We didn't really think this one out before we brought Lucy home from the shelter. They told us she'd likely be nervous and run and hide, so we brought her in the front door and let her off her leash. She ran and jumped up on the couch and curled into a ball. Guess the couch was hers! It's nice though, she thinks she's a lap dog so she's always cuddling with someone, and it's nice to pet her during tv shows.

We try to get her to sleep with us, but as soon as the lights go off, she dives UNDER our bed. Even when hubby or I are gone, she chooses to go under (which is no small feat, since the bed isn't far off the ground. She has to put her head down and army crawl!) She comes out around 5:30 to nudge me awake, and I push her away until 6:15 when we go out on our walk.

And microfiber is great for dogs! Or at least, my sofas are! She jumps up with dirty paws or drool all the time, and it wipes right off. You'd think our sofas were brand new, but we bought them off craigslist and they've survived a dog :)

The dogs are allowed on the furniture if they wish, however all of the dogs are crated at night except Thunder and Scooter. Scooter sleeps in bed with us and Thunder sleeps on the floor. When Juno and Emmy are older and more reliably house trained they can sleep on the bed with us if they want to. Sammy and Marley can't be out of their crates at night because I can't supervise them and don't want any fights.

Ours are allowed anywhere they want to be. They know that food, bones, and toys are to stay on the floor. The only time this rule was broken it was Orson (or course) who "buried" his slobbery bone under Kevin's pillow! ROFL

We have leather furniture so dog hair and drool are not an issue. They have never ripped, scratched, torn, or punctured it with their nails and if they do, it's covered by a warranty. I will never own anything but leather again.......at least as long as I have pets ;)

my dogs are allowed anywhere except the bird room. :)

however, at night while I am sleeping, Roofus is expressly forbidden from sleeping WITH me. He is my size when he's stretched out, and I have a twin sized bed!! :O

I don't agree ^^^. I ve had a quite a few dogs over the years, compete with them extensively and none of the above has ever happened.
They are all crate trained, they readily and willing burst into their crates when asked whether it be in the house or loading for a show/trial/hunting.
They don't bark in their crates or howl and if they do on occassion it doesn't get them what they want, attention or out.
And they can be crated as a group (of course each having their own crate) or just one dog etc at night while the rest of us are in beds again no fuss.

I believe that it is the people who develope SA in a dog, with exceptions of course. And SA has nothing to do with where a dog sleeps, but how we as people train and/or condition our dogs.
The one thing I have noted over the years, needy people are the worst for creating or obtaining a SA dog, boy oh boy does that feed them. And they just don't understand or usually don't want to understand that they are the problem.
Of course they often then seek help when the problem is completely out of control.

The furniture is fair game for all. We have a microfiber couch cover and it washes up just great. (the child has done more to ruin the couch than the pets have) I love microfiber for the pets. My parents have a new microfiber couch, well not so new anymore. No matter how much the cats shed, or the one drools on it, it wipes right off and looks brand new again!!

Dekka sleeps every night with me, and Snip often does. Sometimes Bounce sleeps with us. Only 2 dogs at a time though, there is only so much room in the bed :D. Dekka is a bit attached, but its the same as when she was crated at night as a puppy. She is good in a crate, but will howl a bit when I leave, then settle. At trials she is fine except if she can see me walking the course (bark bark you forgot me bark bark) or heaven forbid if I am running another dog (bark bark hey hey my turn bark bark I am over here bark!)

All of my animals are allowed on my furniture. That would be my 2 puppies and 3 cats. My cats sleep with me (when they are not prowling) and my puppies are crated at night due to their age. However, when they get older and can be trusted at night, i am sure they will be sleeping with me and the crates will be used only for when I have to be gone for awhile.

Benji gets on the couches and my parents allow him on their bed, but I don't allow any dogs on my bed, even if they wanted to (which they don't). Daisy gets on the smaller couch in the tv room sometimes. She doesn't like to get on it if someone is watching her which I don't really understand. We never trained her to stay off the furniture, she just never got on it. Right now Daisy is laying on her blanket on the floor, and Benji is laying on his favorite spot - the couch in the living room in front of the window. He likes to look out the window, and he can feel the nice cool air conditioning coming up from a vent behind the couch.

The dogs get to sleep with me when Jeremy works overnights....which has been the last month and probably until March. It helps me sleep knowing that I'm not alone. I think we may try the blanket method for the new furniture, you should SEE Allie's face when I tell her no. It's horrible.

Hmmm...shouldn't let them sleep with me because it causes SA. NOT. The girls are crated during the day while we are at work, and also crated at night when myself and my husband are both at home with no issues. The only time Allie makes a fuss is when her stomach is upset and she has to go out NOW. The dogs are fine.

Milo's allowed on the furniture and beds.

When I get an apartment, it will depend on my roommates but they're all dog lovers and since Milo doesn't shed I doubt they'll mind the couches...but he will need to be invited onto the bed.

I don't agree with this at all. Quite a few people on this forum let their dogs sleep with them, yet have no anxiety problems. If you maintain a healthy relationship with your dog (and your dog is mentally healthy), there shouldn't be any issues.

I don't allow my dogs on the bed, just because I don't want to deal with the hair and dirt. But I don't mind if they get on the couches.

Everyone's allowed on the furniture here.
Lucy is either crated and night or sleeps in my bed with me. Mostly she sleeps with me. Millie rotates between my bed and her bed throughout the night.
My cats sometimes sleep on the bed with me. I often wake up with 2 dogs and 2 kitties sleeping on me in the morning. :)

Jet will only get on the couch when invited and if there is a blanket on the couch, she hates the feel of the leather for some reason. She doesn't get on the beds.

Bear gets on the couch when I put him up there, lol.
And if he had his way he would sleep on the be with me. But he is still in his puppy crate.

Sofie sleeps in bed with me, it would be too cruel to not allow it for her. For some reason, at night, she HAS to be touching me. She starts crying when I ban her to the end (then instead of her scooting closer keeping me up, the whining will annoy me and then I still get no sleep ). If it's cold and I wrap myself around the covers, she will lay on my head, scratch until I give in (or yell for her to go to the end, cue the whining :lol-sign:), or will push her way underneith. It's weird, but I can't find it in my heart to do anything about it :lol-sign: In her crate she's fine, won't make a peep, but I feel guilty. ;)

But she is not allowed on furniture unless invited or unless she knows that at someone's house she can, we go to a lot of different homes and some she can and some she can't. Where I live, she isn't allowed up at all (allergies).

Dogs are only allowed on the "owner's" bed :p

Major nevers gets on anything, though. Blaze sleeps in bed with me. Lizzie will sometimes get on the bed, and Jake always sleeps UNDER the covers ON my brother's pillow on his bed. :lol-sign:
