Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions. My dog (who is seven years old) has decided to start getting on the furniture, when we're not at home. I am not sure how to train her not to do this, especially since she doesn't get caught in the act. Her evidence is left behind. LOL.

I just wasn't sure if anyone had any training as to how to handle it without putting the dog away. She's fine other than getting on our chaise lounge chair.

I had this problem with one of my dogs---she would climb on the sofa at night- and I did not want her up there since she would have occasional accidents (she was older). I finally ended up putting clothes baskets on the sofa, as a deterent--just made it so there was no space available. Eventually she stopped, and decided her doggy bed was ok.

Put something on the sofa so he can't get on it, and get him a cushy doggie bed so he can lie on that instead.

I was wondering if the spray sent thingy would work in this case? The spray is suppose to repel cats and dogs because of it's odor... Is this something you can safely use in a home?

Merci beaucoup,

You can but I wouldn't bother. The results are hit-and-miss - much more successful in cats than in dogs.

Essentially, there's nothing you can do. She's getting reinforced every time she gets up there because there's no one at home to tell her off.

Another thing I would suggest is a quick trip to the vet, to make sure there's nothing physical going on that would make her prefer to sleep there. Dogs like to `perch' and some dogs with aching hips, stifles (knees), backs etc prefer a higher place to sleep because it's not as hard for them to get up.

Other than that, you need to get her a nice bed to sleep on - preferably something a little off the ground - and put something like a large box or clothes basket on the lounge at night. Since you pretty much won't be able to train her out of it, your solution to this is to restrict access.

Got in before me lol. thats exactly what I do. Sugar will get on the couch as soon as we shut the door..she's a devil for that. Both mine have doggy beds, and thats where we prefer them. In my house the sofa is for the hoomans ;) If you don't have several laundry baskets. Try spraying (not directly) but around the furniture with a spray bottle, and some eucalyptus oil and water. Pets hate it, and It's been a long time deterrent of mine for years. My sis wipes it neat on the window ledges to stop her cat getting up and ummmmm fighting with the curtains.

either way good luck :)

I have a smaller dog that was constantly sneaking up on the couch. I'm come back downstairs to find the pillows smashed in and the spot warm from, hmmm, a dog being curled up taking a little nap? hahah. I ended up getting her a bed of her own and put it in the living room. Okay, the "bed" is actually my carryon luggage - one of those rolling suitcases. hahah. For some reason, I gave that a try. I stuffed it with a pillow and encouraged her on it and for a couple days I always sat down there by it to make it seem like the "best seat in town". Now, she wont leave it. Even when I go upstairs in my office for hours, I come back and there she is: snuggled up in my luggage. LOL. So, maybe if you set up a little nook where your dog can snuggle and make it seem like your jealous of their seat, then this might work for you.
