dog licks me

YUCK i really do find dogs that lick icky! I have had my kelpie Harry since he was 10 weeks old, he is now 5 years old (is it all too late?) i have tried and tried to teach him not to lick but he just keeps on licking me. When we are playing, when he wants a pat, when i go to give him a cuddle, if anyone is anywhere near him (and he likes you) he licks - does anyone have any ideas how to convince him to stop????? Please!

Yeah is can bother some people (not me though ). what I would do it just get up and leave whenever he starts. After a minute go back and give him attention and as soon as he starts get up again. Repeat over and over and make sure to get up every time.

I had a similar problem with my German Shepherd a couple months or so (?) after I got her. She was almost obsessive about it - I had a spot or to on my arm that was almost raw from her licking. "No" and "stop" made her feel the need to be more submissive, and the licking increased. It was not about her "expressing her love" ... or whatever... Her licking (and I've noticed that a lot of dogs who have a "problem" tend to do this) was more like a puppy sucking up to its mom

I love Milo's puppy kisses, but not all my visitors do. I taught him "give kisses" on command, and then I can give "no more kisses" or "thank you for the kisses" when my visitors have had enough. He knows to stop it at that point.

I don't mind it UNLESS they lick my face. That is the only time I find dog licking disgusting and I don't like it. I turn away if they start to lick me in the face.

Busters a real licker, it doesn't bother me a hell of a lot though. If he' annoying I just let him lick my hands and all my friends hate it. i can't let another one of our dogs, Sophie, lick me because she makes me itchy.

You could try just saying "no" and walking off whenever he licks. He'll soon leanr licking gets him nowhere, it actually makes you leave and he'll stop it soon enough.

And I would love some piccies, Buster is mostly kelpie and they're my favourite breed.

I don't mind when my dogs lick me but Mollie gets to the point where she does it obsessively. She would sit and lick my hand or arm for hours if I'd let her, she also does this to bed pillows and sheets (nothing like laying down to go to bed ans sticking your head on a soaking wet pillow!). What I do when she starts to do it is to get her a kong stuffed with frozen goodies to keep her occupied or I take her for a walk to wear her out and then she just goes to sleep.

with yoshi she doesn't like constantly or everyone but once in a while she'll get in a lick mood. i've taught her 'giev me a kiss' and she'll smoosh her nose and front of her snout into you just like giving you a peck lol

Thanks so much for your replys! I do love my boy's affection and cuddles, licking just grosses me out, it just feels horrible to me, always has, my old golden learnt real quick to only "kiss" once then back off, but Harry just doesnt get it! Ive tried NO, ive tried moving away, i will definitely try some of the other sugestions here and see what happens. I have a one year old daughter Mia now too and Harry (and Mia too) think its a great hoot to lick her face, he just doesnt stop!!! And yes to both Chewbecca, Brattina and Xerxes, that is Harry in my avatar and he doest the raw meat lick too, ick! i'll try and post some more pics of him now, he is rather lovely i must say!!!

Licking is one thing I do not tolerate - Ilsa has never need a licker, Ada isn't a licker... Ronin used to be, but he learned very quickly that licking got him a whole lotta *nothing* - I would get up and walk away from him if he tried to lick. He hasn't licked since!

Now, nose pokes are a different story...

Don't get a papillon if you don't want kisses. Beau is an obsessive licker. He just gets to licking your arm and won't stop until you tell him 'no'. Luckily I find kisses pretty cute.... unless they're in the mouth. Dog tongue inside my mouth = eww. And they always seem to get me when I'm laughing.

When Buckshot kisses, you stay kissed. Kinda like getting a wet mop across the face. For some reason though it has never bothered me. A neighbors JRT that is lightning fast tries to lick the inside of your mouth and she is relentless. I must say that I dont like that even a little bit.
