Working at a pet hotel for years, and now as a trainer, I've been turned off by a LOT of breeds that I used to love. I'm so glad I got the hands on experience with so many breeds, before I got one and it was too late!!!
When I was a teenager I loved Boxers, thought they were the cutest and really wanted one. At the hotel, I met a few Boxers that I adored! Just awesome dogs. All of which were show quality. The rest... omfg! No matter how cute a dog is, I could never tolerate such grating noises. A lot of the Boxers would make a screaming ape noise literally for 8 hours straight in day camp, while harassing and trying to pick fights with all of the other dogs. The worst dog in day camp, this Boxer who SCREAMED non-stop, just happen to move in next door to me. She would get out and jump my dogs, of course, while screaming! Ahhhhhhhhhhh! They were the #1 breed to fight in day camp. No one there liked Boxers, even if they used to love them like me, after dealing with so many outrageously difficult dogs. Few were human aggressive at all, except for food guarding, but they'd claw your face off jumping on you! Definitely an example of an energetic breed getting way too popular with the wrong owners.
When I was a kid I really wanted a Golden Retriever. In the 90s I had tons of friends with great Goldens, and I know a few people now with the coolest Goldens. But again the hotel completely tainted to breed for me, as did grooming!!! I like a secure, confident, friendly Golden. The majority of the dogs who came into the hotel were either super submissive to the point of being annoying, or super quiet and shut down - until the moment they attacked. I have never met a HA Golden, which is a great thing, but the trend towards DA dogs really turns me off in a breed that should never be DA. I also dreaded grooming Goldens more than any other breed. While I remember my childhood Goldens being relatively calm and well mannered, basically every Golden I have groomed is downright frantic, stubborn and just pushes against you with all of their weight no matter what you do. I thought I was going to have a miscarriage from grooming this obese massive Golden, who jumped off the grooming table, right on top of me, and dragged me across the room. I had to pick him up, he would not budge! And my insides felt broken all day.
That is not how I feel a Golden should be.
I love Border Collies. I really do. But after meeting so many who are crazy and annoying, I think I'll wait a while for THE perfect BC to ever get one again, if I do. It's been an amazing experience sharing my life with Gonzo and I wouldn't trade him for anything! However, I've also learned that a BCs personality doesn't mesh with me. It's not their energy, their drive, their loyalty or their intelligence. It's just their vibe. The slinkiness, the staring, the obsessions. I respect & appreciate the breed but I am just not a BC person I've found.
