I've had my fair share of wish-washy-ness with breeds, and I go back and forth a lot, but about a year ago I was sooo sure I'd have a German Shepherd someday. I was sure of it.

Now I'm almost 99% sure I won't. I still admire them from afar. I think they are a gorgeous dog, and just awesome, and I still drool whenever I see one, LOL... but after meeting lots and lots more, and spending a lot of time with my uncles girl, I'm just not sure they're the breed for me anymore. I definitely won't have one while owning a small dog.

But... you? Any breeds that at one point you were SURE you'd have but then maybe completely changed your mind?

Danes! They used to be my most favorite breed ever! Now I really have no interest. I still adore seeing them and interacting with them, but I have no interest in owning one.

Also Dalmations and Bull Terriers. Dals I still love but I'm not the right owner for one, and BTs after I saw a show where the skeleton morphed from a normal dog skull to a BT skull and it totally wigged me out.

I've gone through lots of breeds I thought I wanted.

Boxers, still like them but they just don't really fit me anymore. But for awhile there I was pretty sure that was going to be my next dog

Cane Corso, when I didn't know much but liked how they look. I found out I didn't like or want DA or possible HA so those got kicked off.

Corgis, never found a breeder I liked with dogs I liked and then later discovered that I'm not fond of the cattle dog temperament that much.

Australian Cattle Dog, same with the Corgi in addition to not being fond of their possibility of DA and HA. And as I've gotten older aesthetically I like less bone and longer legs in dogs. Before I decided on Koolies I was completely set on a ACD but at the same time not completely comfortable in my decision.

APBT, still love the breed but once again I just don't want to deal with DA.

When I was younger I really liked more bulldoggy breeds but as I've gotten older by tastes overall have swung to the herding dog side of things a lot more.

Malinois. lol jk

There are several if i go back to my childhood sitting in a loft with a dog breed encyclopedia but I can try to narrow it down to Staffordshire bull terriers, I love them from afar but I'll never own another.

I could make a much longer list about dogs I used to never like and now want.

After Mitsu passes away I don't think I will ever have another Bully breed. I love her to death, but our personalities really clash. But she is not my dog so I deal with her the best I can. She is a great dog for Tyler though.

A golden retriever. These dogs were MY dogs you know? Ever since I was a little kid.. I knew I would grow up and have a golden. but lately I guess I just...got over the childhood glow of airbud and REALLY looked at them as a breed and it wasn't the perfect fit.. I spent some extended time with one who was just a LOVE..but he also shed like crazy, had an oily coat (pretty common in retrievers from what I've heard..the whole water proof thing) and of course LOVED EVERYONE
I certainly still see myself perhaps adopting the right adult.. but the drive I always had to get a golden puppy..just isn't there.

German shepherds. I grew up and learned what it was like to do my own cleaning (and how much they shed) and I also grew up and realized how IMPOSSIBLE it is to rent with a GSD.

English bulldog. I just really wanted a skateboarding dog.. but now the vet bills/health issues just totally turn me off.

Canaan Dogs. Nearly had one. Backed out due to Webster falling into my life. One of my better decisions. The ones I've met since have been freakazoids (technical term).

Australian Shepherd. I was obsessed with them for a long time, dreamed about having one (it even had a name and everything, haha) and was absolutely sure I would have one someday. An Aussie was supposed to be my first dog that I could play with and do things with (because my dogs growing up were super boring for a kid). I wanted to get into Agility, I wanted a dog that liked frisbee and fetch, a dog that was fun to teach tricks and things to, etc. An Aussie just seemed perfect to me. And then Tango landed in our laps, and I never got my Aussie. I still really like them, but they lost that 'it' sort of factor I guess for me. I discovered Tollers to a more indepth level and fell in love and so the Aussie got kinda pushed away from my mind a bit. I won't say I won't have one, as I can still see myself with one, but my issue with an Aussie is that I feel they're a slightly hairier, tail less, barkier version of all the things I love about Tollers... so why would I get an Aussie when I already have found a breed that is what I want? Although I do think Aussies are maybe a little more quick to learn and are more talented at catching frisbees, but I just have a hard time steering away from my breed to get something else with a lot of similarities.

I used to really, really love German Shepherds as well and was certain I would have one. Then my taste in dogs changed, and I met more GSDs and they and I just do not click. I've only met two that I really like. All of the other ones have some behavioural issue or another that I do not like and the behaviours are all similar which leads me to believe it's a breed thing.

Other than that, I can't think of any breeds that I was dead set on having. There have been a couple that have come and gone in spurts, and changed as I get older and learn more, but nothing really that became a must have to an absolutely not other than a GSD.

All through college I was determined to have an Irish Wolfhound someday.

Over time my taste in dogs has gotten smaller and smaller, though, so I think I can say at this point that it will never happen. I don't dislike them or anything, just bigger than I want to live with at this point.

APBT - I still really love the breed and greatly enjoy them, but its just not what I want to live with as far as looks, breed traits, coat, etc.

BC - When I was a kid and we had Buddy I was so sure BC's would be all I ever had. Now... eh, I'm sure I'll one or two over the years, but they aren't my main breed anymore if that makes sense.

Honestly it was a big suprise to me how strongly I just click with German Shepherd dogs (and their crazy Belgian friends lol). There is just something really strong between me and those specific breeds that isn't matched by other breeds.

English Bulldog. Know way could I deal with the health issues. I'd still love to have an alternative bulldog-type, though.

Boxer. I wouldn't say no to one that was a rescue, but I don't think I'd actively search one out. There is just something about most of them that doesn't really click for me.

Ibizan and Pharoah Hounds. And Basenji's. I love the way they look, but they don't fit what I want at all.

Caucasain Ovacharka. Love these dogs, but realistically I will probably never be happy with a dog that was not naturally friendly.

Tollers. Perfect... except they seem to be a bit more unstable than I'd like. Screaming, they seem prone to shyness.

Laughing at how big Squash got.

But yeah, I agree with you. I was all BIG DOGS RULE and now here I was hoping my puppy wouldn't be much over 30 lb. I still love big old cuddly dogs but overall I've really come to appreciate the smaller to medium sized dogs

Danes, Papillons, PBGVs, Aussies, Great Pyrs, Dobes, Setters, Clumbers... I'm sure there are more but yeah I went through a phase in my life where I wanted giant, flashy dogs or tiny ones.

Berners were at one point really high on my wants as well as a Newfie. I can't see owning either due to health concerns and short lives. Later I gave serious thought to a doberman but again - health concerns.

I know, right? The PLAN was that since his MOM is about 50#, he was supposed to be around that size as well. :rofl1:

Me, too. I think my absolute perfect size is right around 40-50#. Although, I do enjoy my big galoot. :D
