I'm not an expert on dog breeds, but I agree that there's got to be a limit to making a dog look more "fashionable" at the expense of its overall health.

My family's bulldog died very recently at the age of seven from a sudden heart attack. I loved him dearly - he was really the sweetest-tempered, most affectionate dog in the world, and by no means do I wish he never existed - but I did feel sorry for him for having so many physical limitations, and he should not have died so young.

The whole "Alapaha" thing I'm still leary of. May be just me though *shrugs*.
As well you should be. As an Alapaha owner I am nauseated by 90% of the Alapaha breeders out there. Recently the breeders that I am associated with (and myself) and been having discussions with "the other" breeders regarding why they are breeding dogs with shorter muzzles, poorly put together front ends, shorter and heavier aka: bullier dogs. They say "It's what the public demands."

And there is your answer.

Those people are breeding for money and money only. If the public doesn't want it why would they breed it?

The breeders that I work with are breeding for health and working ability. The head breeder, Mike Connors, moved to Georgia and actually worked with Lana Lou Lane, the woman who first developed the breed. He continues the breeding of dogs for health and working ability and it hurts ALL of us who own these fantastic dogs when we see CRK's ads in Dog Fancy magazine. We don't advertise, and frankly most puppies are given away to friends instead of sold. Teeny and Blue were both given to me. My friend is getting a puppy off of Teeny's mom for no cost. It's all about a good home for a fantastic breed . . . NOT about how much you can get for each puppy.

my opinion, any dog that can't reproduce without assistance shouldn't be bred. my definition of an evolutionary dead end is that.
I fully agree with this. We need to let nature do the talking at some point! If it isn't physically built to be able to reproduce, or if it is too DA to reproduce, then it should not reproduce. Period.
