Does it bother anyone else when rap singers steal music?

Sampling I can live it, blatent copy/pasting I can't. Although the cover of NWA's song "Boys in the hood(?)" by...can't remember the name at the moment but they turned it into a folksy song, cracks me up, just because of the difference in style.

I don't care for much rap at all, hip hop either, though I have been subjected to some of the underground stuff that has more of a political bent to it (Sage Francis, i.e.)and I don't hate it. Daniel listens to some rap, DMX type stuff and I'll put up with it, but very grudgingly.

When a song comes out with more bleeps than words, then there's a problem. And sadly, that's what I see rap is. It's bleeps trimmed with words (the context of which usually offends me) layed over a beat.

What I don't like is some of the bleeps they use, like girls moaning and stuff, sometimes I rather here the word than someone moaning. And some of bleeps are annoying, every 5 seconds, gets tiresome.

I used to really hate rap music and then a funny thing happened. I turned on a rap/hip-hop radio station one day and at 47 yrs old, found myself liking it! :D Then I went out and bought Eminems "Curtain Call"...and I liked it!
I still can't believe it. I don't like ALL rap...and I sure can't say much for the lyrics (when you can understand them) but there is something about it...
I'll tell ya though, even when I turn that music down so as not to annoy other people, even though the rappers (or singers or whatever) go lower, the bass STILL thumps way too loud!
As far as talent goes....have you ever tried to rap along with a song? I sure as heck can't do it.

I am pretty "old school" too, though. Nothing on this earth can compare to Pink Floyd. Just trying a little versatility in my old age, I guess. :)

I Just Died in Your Arms Tonight must have been covered at least 30 times and each version is better than the original IMO. I really like Journey's version.

I think Foreigner did the original. Maybe Fleetwood.

I believe Air Supply did the original?? I may be totally wrong, but I know if they didn't do the original, they did a cover. Cutting Crew also did the song and I think its the more popular version.

An artist doing a cover version of a song, and doing it their own way (Hendrix's Watchtower, Cowboy Junkies Sweet Jane, lots of Alison Krauss stuff among thousands of others) is fine. They are legally getting permission to do it, and they are doing their own artistic interpretations of it.

I can't stand rap. My neighbors have subwoofers in every car that literally shake my house and blast it all the time and I often have the desire to throw a brick thru the window to shut them up.

I don't have a problem with people taking samples of other music. It does require talent to cut the loops up and all. Different talent than being a musician, but talent nonetheless. That talent is usually with the producer, not with the rapper. I am a musician and have a computer based studio. I don't take samples of songs, but I have loops of drum beats, etc, that I cut up and modify for the piece of music I'm working on. It's not easy to do to get it right.

If someone is not properly licensing their samples, or doing things to avoid copywrite infringement, that is where I draw the line.

Hmmm...I pretty much listen to a broad music span. For most parts I'll listen to alternative stuff first...but I don't turn the radio off when there's a rap/pop song coming on. I do listen to "Charts hip hop" (Oh God..I outed myself)...and I think it's fun to go out and dance to, if you really wanna shake it :)

The bad thing is so many of them are eating their government rationed cheese when they come in:rolleyes: Luckilly the people that compete are what most of the business comes from and they are not the scum. Although most of the competition cars are junk jsut because they need cut up. there was a hummer in there yesterday that sounded great but I wish I had that kind of money to blow! they'll buy moe in gas than the stereo cost in a month!

One of my favorite interpretations is a song called "Green Haze" by Elvis Hitler. They do a very credible job of performing "Purple Haze" while singing the lyrics to the theme song from "Green Acres." :D

Usually I like the original version of songs better, but not always. I like P. Diddy's version of "Every Breath You Take", originally by the Police, better. And I can't think of anymore off the top of my head right now.
