I am a vet and I do not like docking puppies tails - its just unpleasant for me. We are not taught ear cropping and I do not do it at all - where I live there are very few vets who will even do ear cropping. Then again, I'd rather dock the tails myself and do it properly then have the owners do it themselves as many puppies die that way. Royal Canin publishes a book with a Boxer with a long tail - of all the owners who have seen that book not ONE has commented on the long tail - they just don't notice it.

I was browsing around a kennel today and they have a Rott or two with a long tail...takes a moment to realize it but it doesn't look bad. And the tail really isn't all that long, somewhat like a lab's. If it was a pointer or whippet-type tail, then I could understand the necessity of cropping it in a working breed.

Oh, btw, welcome Tamrick. I think this is great that we have a vet here. You'll be loads of help, especially in the health forum. I look forward to your responses. There are so many in need in that area.

What kind of dog (s) do you have?

Anyhow....glad you're here!

My bf was circumsized three times! LOL Well, they kept botching the surgery and he went under three times - at different ages. He thinks it's funny to tell people that. He should tell my parents that when they visit! ha ha ha

if it hadnt worked the first time when I was too young to remember it, well I guess my parents could have done it several times before I was old enough to remember but it certainly would not happen now. your fiancee has *&^%'s of solid brass I think.

boxers don't have any more of a need to have their tail cropped than a great dane.

i know the image of undocked/uncropped dogs of certain breeds is still unusual for people in the US, but in many european countries docking and cropping has been banned (with the exception for true working dogs), and the results are really not what all the nay-sayers (who think cropping/docing is necessary) expected.

here are links to a few sites with photos:

I sooo don't believe in cropping! Ears most of all, that is for all the vain, inhumane humans out there. A gross practice and not needed. This is a nasty, vile, inhumane practice. Dogs look great the way they were born.

Now, there is an on going debate about certain breeds about the tails....I have no confirmation on this, vets debate all the time. But, come on.... what does a properly taken care of boxer(or other breeds) have to worry about his tail. If his does succum to injury, take hime to a vet. Tell me please how many of you know of dogs that "broke" their tail. Did it really put them in jeoparady? No, it's another fee to feed breeders. If you look in the wild, nature, the tail in most animals can be taken off, broke, ripped off.... etct..... to save the more vital organs.

I broke 2 of my toes, but I can still walk. If I knew that I was going to break 2 of my toes on the same foot, that does not mean I want to be cut off at the knee. I hate breeders.

To the above poster, I lived in Europe for 3 years (loved it)! They treat there dogs so well..... I am glad you posted, but I don't believe we will get a welcome response from the U.S. breeders. Good for you!!! I share your values.

It is not cruel!

I dont understand that people who have their baby boy circumcised think its cruel to have a puppies tail docked, because there is no difference! It is more painfull for a baby boy than it is for the puppy. The pup gets anesthesia and the baby does not. Tail docking is not cruel! The pup does not go through any pain. Plus it is hard to sell a pup who has a natural tail, most people just prefer a docked tail in certain breeds. People who are not educated about this assume that it is cruel just because there is cutting involved. Do your research and you will find out that docking benefits the dog in the long run. Docking has been going on for hundereds of years.

Do your research

You cant change my mind on this one! I have done my research and 90% of vets and breeders agree that it is not cruel in any way. Dont get me wrong, but im not trying to be rude. This is just my opinion.

I think ear cropping is cruel but if you think about it it's like us getting ear pierced. But tail docking it's okay. Some people won't even buy dogs that are not cropped.
