Well Ive read it all and not seen where anyone has cropping isnt for cosmetic reasons, may I ask why you had your dogs ears cropped? I take it wasnt because you like the look then? Please humour me and tell me your reason again if necessary

Oh and I dont think there was any reason to be quite so patronising to Dizzy you have no idea whether she is young. Im not and no I dont live in an apartment and Ive yet to see anyone wrap a lurcher in bubble wrap!
Anyone who thinks that Ear cropping is done for purely aesthetical reasons is a moron...

Few of reasons for my dog:
1. Better Hearing
2. Better ear ventilation, thus less infections and less chance of water being stuck in the ear.
3. ALOT less chance of injury during a fight/work

Want more? Im seriously gonna start slapping people when they tell me how "poor my baby" is because his ears are cut off. Idiots.

I think this is getting out of hand now, I don't agree with it but here its illegal so I am not used to seeing dogs with cropped ears, Oriondw do you have any proof that it promotes all the things you said?

Lurchers are one of the most worked type of dogs Ive never seen one docked or cropped.

Im not sure I want to be on aboard with people who feel the need to threaten violence and need to resort to silly name calling but it appears its the norm on here for some people. Reasoned debate is all good and Im perfectly willing to listen to other peoples points what shame others arnt.

Byron was cropped because any responcible dobe breeder would want their pups ears cropped. That should end the story there but it doesn't. He developed an ear infection and didn't get cropped right away. We even considered not getting it done because one of our idiot vets told us it was cruel. Byron was in horrible pain nad didn't do anything but lay there. Finally took him to my horses vet who told me unless I cropped him or got the ear surgery where they pull out the drum or something,he would always be miserable. The vet who did the cropping kept him a couple days to try to get rid of the infection but he ended up just having to do the surgery because it was not helping. The day after we brought him home he was a new dog :) So what would have happened if cropping was illegal? I'd have a deaf or dead dog! So how can you sit there and tell me it should be illegal. Its pure stupidity when people sit here nad tell you why it is done.I don't care if it is common or not because it happened to my dog! He has not had a problem with his ears since the day he was cropped. Compared to the infection ear care for the crop was sooo easy. My dog was miserable and now is and has been,as happy as can be. Who are you to say its the wrong thing to do? If he could have gotten cropped just a week earlier(which he would have been but they were moving) he never would have had the infection.

And try to tell me I don't do whats best for my dogs. If you don't work with your dog or do anyhting active wiht your dog then how can you even act like you would know something about it. Go see someone with pups who have been cropped and if you think they look miserable then complain. I've never seen a dog from a good cropper have any bad side effects.Of course there are idiot croppers but thats why you research them.

And why would a lurcher need cropped or docked? Never seen one with a tail that even looked like it would get injured easilly! They were not bred getting croped and docked so how could you compare that?

What i would like to know is what would all the people who crop do in the uk, as your dogs would not be eligible for registration or showing?

And I think, especially with the dobe, the dock is what gives them the regal look. It was what the breed is supposed to have. Unless its a rescue I wouldn't own an uncropped dobe. I wouldn't buy from a breeder who didn't crop. They are supposed to have their dogs looking their best and the ears are part of that. If you don't agree thats your problem but don't say its cruel or unnecessary because that is far from the truth.

I like the look it gives but I would never put a dog of mine through it, if they were suposed to look like it they would be born like it, I think that docking and dew claw removel is where it should stop, as these are easy and quick and are done when a dog is very young

Do what I always do with regards to authority?... Ignore it.

there is a reason why its called a "WORKING dog"... emphasis on word working.

I dont see a point in getting a registration or showing at the cost of working ability.

I have to admitt that if they said it couldn't been done on a show dog I would quickly support any registery that allowed it. May sound bad but after my experience with byron I will never say it ok to take that right away from someone. I wouldn't say it is bettering the breed if you are breeding uncropped dogs since you never know how their ears are turning out. I think the DPCA wouldn't go for it anyway:) So I'm not that worried about it. so bettering the breed in a dobe may not mena akc shows anyomre. Its sad but what can you do with some of the people that go nutts over this and have never even had a cropped dog or seen one horrible crop.

sorry cant do the multi quote thing.

Responsble breeders have been not docking for some time here and I dont believe we have a higher rate of deaf dogs than anywhere else. However no one was telling you it should be illegal it was just pointed out that it IS illegal in the UK and across most of Europe, just information and a reason I cant go and see a litter of cropped dogs.

Im very pleased that your dog is happy now, I have nothing personal against you or your dog/dogs not sure how many youve got.

However, I would like to know what makes you think I dont do anything active with my own dogs? Im not sure where Ive said that. OK I do have one rather inactive greyhound but hey she's retired so every right to be a be of a coach potatoe.

Also how many lurchers have you seen, no not being funny but I thought there were pretty rare over that side of the water. My lurchers nearly all have whippy supposedly easily damaged tails, no I dont actively work them.

I sooo don't believe in cropping! Ears most of all, that is for all the vain, inhumane humans out there. A gross practice and not needed. This is a nasty, vile, inhumane practice. Dogs look great the way they were born.

Now, there is an on going debate about certain breeds about the tails....I have no confirmation on this, vets debate all the time. But, come on.... what does a properly taken care of boxer(or other breeds) have to worry about his tail. If his does succum to injury, take hime to a vet. Tell me please how many of you know of dogs that "broke" their tail. Did it really put them in jeoparady? No, it's another fee to feed breeders. If you look in the wild, nature, the tail in most animals can be taken off, broke, ripped off.... etct..... to save the more vital organs.

I broke 2 of my toes, but I can still walk. If I knew that I was going to break 2 of my toes on the same foot, that does not mean I want to be cut off at the knee. I hate breeders.

You preach vets, big time; are you by any chance a vet? Oh my gawd, what kind of person are you. I have not read one post by you that is not rude, obniouxs and downright trollish. You would do way better to not be so defensive and nasty. State your opinion and move on. This really is a great place and we all could learn from each other.

Lurchres have a greyhoud set lower tail right? Not something as easilly hurt as some others. I didn't mean you specifically because you apparently don't have docked breeds. I mena someone with docked breeds that works them. your dogs have nothing to do with the discussion becaue they are not a breed that has been docked for a hundred plus years. Even if you did work them and nothing happened to them it wouldn't really count at all towards the discussion. I also cna't say my boys docked or cropped to get away in a fight. He runs through the fields and woods al day. I know if he hadn't been done he would have had to go through the surgery later in life :p He hurt his hip running into a tree once!

And about a dog breaking its tail. It is very painfull and rarely do they ever heal. they just break and break again. thats why you will see some labs with docked tails. Maybe its because I live out in farming country that I see all this stuff but I know people who have had their dogs in because they broke it in a door and then every time they had a wagging fit it would get injured again. Properly caring for my dog shouldn't mean that I can't let him outside to run

Id like to see your dog with ears kill a few cayotee's and come out without a scratch ;)

On vicious looking: I had a dobeX with natural ears and tail and I can't tell you how many times people would step back from the door when they saw her peeking out the window or crossed the street to avoid walking past her. One lady even took her dog inside. Most those people just saw the markings and associated the black/tan with vicious. For the record, this was one of the most submissive, least aggresive dogs ever...she had gotten the crap beat out of her in her previous home, but she never, ever exhibited aggression nor the tendancy to fear bite. Cropped ears can/do make a difference, but natural can look just as mean. People associate more with color markings than you might think.

On reasons: There are reason for and reasons against. I personally don't think a hard line should be drawn. Dogs such as Schnauzers & Dobes do have chronic ear problems that are easily avoided by cropping. On the other hand, Cockers are even worse with ear problems and they are left natural. I myself have seen many a dog break the tip of it's tail or even a few vertebrae down just by getting too excited and other than wrapping with padding and vet wrap every day of it's life, there really isn't a way to get the tail to heal. Also, some of the longerhaired working breeds, Old English Sheepdogs and Aussies for example, have very feathery, bushy tails that are nigh impossible to keep clean. Most Aussies are natural bob-tails though. I think OES's are docked a few days after birth.

So this essay is basically to say that I can see valid reasons for both sides of the argument. I also think that since most of the responsible breeders already have homes lined up for their pups, they should give the future owner the option of leaving the dog natural, while explaining all the potential risks involved in doing so.
