I have a whippet who screams like he is being murdered when the vet looks in his ear.. don't know why!

Some puppies scream like a banshee when they get shots!
When Tyr was a puppy, he screamed like he was being killed and all the vet wanted was to look at his mouth.

Just to say I like tails and docked tails.. The whippets have lovely sweeping tails, Sport has a crazy weapon on the end of his butt, and the JRTs have 4 inch long expressive nubbies.... All are great! Just because I support the docking of working breeds does not mean I don't like the long flowy tails of other breeds.

I've never been fond of those who dock tails so short they almost aren't there. I like a few inches of tail on the butt. I understand that some breeds are born without tails, like aussies and pembroke corgis and such. But I don't understand why some need to dock a rottweiler so short they just have a little butt bump!

Not being funny, but I could also find 5 articles from approved peoples who disagree.....

Means nothing.

Did you read it? It means something, especially when you consider the source.

Okay....now that is really all I'll say on the subject. This time I mean it.:rofl1:

I have docked and done dews on quite a few litters in my time( I did it for fellow breeders as well, not just my own ), and found that while some pups *hollered* a great many did so because you had to hold them so still, they cried long before I put the hemostats on, so while I am sure it not pleasant I am not sure it is all that bad. They usually happily go back to nursing as soon as put back with Mom. I don't like it when people wait too long, I made that mistake once and those pups did seem to feel it!

I have seen that many times, breeders who went to ves for docking had more issues with infection, stress etc. So I prefer to dock/dew them at their home so they and Mom are not stressed by travel!

Having said that, I do have 2 JRTs with full tails, my first Mindy, and Max whose litter I was supposed to help the breeder dock, but he was a singleton and not well, so he did not get docked. I love them tail and all, but I always worried when Mindy was backing from the earth about her tail bending back and she was very hard to *tail* in the earth as her tail was long and awkward, tailing a docked JRT ( So long as they do it right and not too short, a JRTs tail is supposed to be a *Handle* of sorts ) is much easier.

So while I have no problem with full tailed dogs, I do prefer docked tails for docked breeds most of the time.

Exactly. That's what my Doberman's breeder said too basically. And that they hollered and carried on about a lot of things if she took them away from Mom at that age. No, medically, there is not likely pain associated with this when done very early.

I like docked tails, and I also like tails.

Certain breeds do look better with them docked, and others don't. <----------MY OPINION :D

Orson is just as expressive with his little nubbin as Phoebe is with her "thump the wall/floor/tables" tail, LOL

I couldn't agree more. I've seen some Rotts and Dobes in person and all they have is a tiny "bump" where their tail used to be :( I don't like that look at all...........I want to see a nub that can waggle with the best of them :D

OH! I also wanted to say that when I was a kid we had a dog about Phoebe's size......she was a mix. A little lab, coyote, shepherd mix. She started her life with us WITH a tail, and it as a nice tail.

She got out of our yard and went to the neighbor's trash barrel...........he assumed it was coyotes and shot at her  He nearly missed, but he did hit her tail and "docked" clean off! It was a horrible sight and very painful. After it all healed, she really looked better without it IMO :D

When properly done... I love 'em! I like nice clean docks, the kind done by experienced vets and breeders. Hack jobs and amateur docks.... I'd rather see the full tail.

Gotta love the nub!

Yes....gotta love the nub. Dobermans look ridiculous with long, thin, whip-like tails and not only look ridiculous, but because of their clutziness and sheer abandon, their craziness antics, they surely would be prone to injury. If nobody liked my little Doberbut puppy picture, heres another couple to add to Sizzledog's cute little Doberbutt picture.

And with all due respect, this indicates just how much knowledge you actually have about docking.

MILLIMETERS turn into inches when a dog grows up. To get a proper tail on a Rottie without it turning into a 4" handle later, the tail has to be docked VERY short.

I prefer a Milton tail, but be that as it may, you get some Mikey type tails too when you are doing puppies at 2 days of age. I want SHORT because I do NOT want re-done later when anesthesia is required.

I speak from experience on this issue. Not sure how many others do. My puppies start screaming the MOMENT they are held and restrained for docking. They scream for the shaving. They give a big OWWIE when the tail is snipped, and they cry during the stitching.

The MOMENT they are put back in their basket, they are quiet. I have observed or held EVERY puppy I have ever had docked. Docking is my personal choice for my breed, and it is to the breed standard. Dogs used for herding, carting, manwork, etc, have real reasons to be docked. My dogs will be docked as long as it remains legal in this country.

That is my own personal choice, and beyond that, not really anyone else's business.

Docking and cropping is where the ARs began to erode our rights. They continue, apparently unabated.

I don't think dobes look rediculous at all...... or rotties... and I PREFER boxers with full tails... I like all of em.

In 10 years kids won't even remember what docked dogs looked like here.

We don't have cropped dogs..... THEY look odd to me....!!

They probably won't know what freedom from governement oppression looks like either. It is happening here too as we're following in those same footsteps.
