Yes, all the time. Oddly, its only ever from serious dog people... who should know better than to blanket steriotype a breed of dog. The ignorant public think theyre either ugly (just cuz) or love them completely. No, the incredible levels of sheer nastiness come from dog people. go figure

All the time. I kinda get a triple whammy with a Dachshund, since they're small dogs, hounds AND terriers. Most frequently I hear:
"That's not a Dachshund. Dachshunds are fat."
"Keep her away. Dachshunds are so snappy."
"Oh, those are the dumbest/most stubborn/untrainable dogs!"
"They're so aggressive."
"Can't let em off leash."
"You're going to do Rally with her? Keep dreaming, honey. Dachshunds can't be taught, much less compete."
"Ankle biters!"

And of course all the rest of the small dog hate. Losers. It's always fun to see their faces when Nola trumps their stereo types.

I own a JACK RUSSELL TERRIER...'nuff said. I hear much more negative than I do positive. :)
To be honest, I have had more bad experiences with JRTs than good.

You often hear how "crazy" and "spazzy" Labradors are. Not that those are completely untrue, but it does get old that so many people make excuses for what is lack of training/exercise...
That. The other one I get a lot (and, apparently I'm the only one in the conversation who sees it as a bad thing) is how huge the other person's Lab is. That usually follows their comment about how tiny Caleb is. I usually respond to that with, "Well, he's right smack dab in the middle of the standard for a male" with "So stick that in your pipe and smoke it" going through my head.

Well sort of. About their probable mixes, anyway. Although I hear by far the most negative comments about hounds (Maisy).

Actually.... no. Maybe I don't get out enough :rofl1:
Really all I've ever heard is that boxers are "stubborn." Which isn't untrue at all, since typically people are referring to the fact that they aren't always the most biddable - something has to be in it for them.

The rest of my crew? I just don't ever hear people make comments about those breeds.

Honestly, I generalize and say negative comments about breeds all the time lol but of course don't say them to people that own that breed :p

I guess that was kind of a dumb question :p I can see discussing the negatives if you are discussing breeds with someone (online or in person), but I couldn't imagine walking up to someone and saying the things that I've heard people say.

I guess I was surprised at the conformation show by some of the 'dog people' though. I'm out and about at a lot of dog events and this one just brought out the comments.

I have toy dogs so.... yes. Constantly get peoples' opinions about how toy dogs can't do anything and are useless or rats or just like a cat, etc etc etc.
"You're going to do Rally with her? Keep dreaming, honey. Dachshunds can't be taught, much less compete."
I've known some kick ass small dogs. Not just agility either, but some really fantastic obedience/rally toy dogs. One of my instructors has minpins and she does a great job with them, her male is way cool doing obedience. They do dock dogs and barn hunt and everything else too.

If I had a nickel for every time someone said retrievers are stupid and/or unfocused...

Other things "negatives" are usually things like silly, physical, etc. which I wouldn't really argue with. Those are negatives for some and attributes for others.

But stupid and unfocused? Sure some are. Goes for all breed/types. But while their work ethic manifests differently than other types, it takes a fool who either can't recognize it or can't use it to call a good retriever either of those things.

But anyway how I react varies by situation. If I think there's a chance for reasonable discussion, I'll engage. If not, then it still varies.

Nah, not really. Most people just say 'oh they're so smart!'. I guess she's too cute and friendly to be accused of eating couches and destroying your house. :)
Today two ladies walked up stopped 8 ft away from me and Talon pointed and said "that's a dog you never want, they are neurotic and destroy everything." Than they just walked away. I was all  lol

Usually I hear more of "how do you handle a border collie? They are way too hyper for me!" which isn't really rude, so I don't really care. Other than that not much. People are a bit put off by Talon's intense "PET ME NAO!" stare though. I guess it also doesn't help that he wants to start by sniffing their eyeballs :rofl1:

Art most people want to pet, but no one's ever really said anything bad about him at least not to me.

Well, I do tell Abrams he is dumb and has the attention span of a gnat, so....LOL (Seriously, he's a quick learner and has great focus when working.)

Although, a client at work and I did have an entire conversation about what all our Chessies had run in to while not paying attention. :rofl1: The chair is Abrams' culprit, hers was the wall by a door. Hahahahaha

LOL I think I may have gotten a retriever in a border collie body than! Talon runs into so many things, but I like to say he is so focused he can't see those things jump out in front of him ;)

Most of the time people say they are so hyperactive! I say that they do love exercise and interaction but two of mine are super easy in the house.

From "dog people"
- Aussies bark a lot
- Not as smart/fast as BCs
- Human aggressive/dog aggressive
- "beginner border collies"
- Lack of tail is "gross"/"weird"

From general public
- His butt is like a rabbit! Weird.
- Those dogs are too smart! They are hyper too!

Doesn't really bother me anymore. I really DO NOT understand why people think the lack of tail IS SUCH an issue, I hear about it at least 3 times a week. WHO CARES?!
I think it's cute.

I own a Pit Bull. Enough said.

But I've gotten comments about Ma'ii to. "I don't like Blue Heelers". Well good, because I don't like you. Now go away.

Snippy or downright aggressive (apparently aloof translates to aggressive in some peoples' minds), somewhat "wild," completely untrainable....... Things that they most certainly are not. I've heard it all and just try to educate as much as possible.

I think I get more positive comments than negative in regard to all of my dogs, but I definitely get more than my fair share of negatives too.

Dobermans: I am pretty sure the first thoughts from most people regarding Dobermans are negative thoughts. The worst is when people are petting my dogs and have no idea what a Doberman is, and they love my dogs, and then they ask the breed and the people leap back like I electrocuted them. Because apparently my friendly dogs might attack at any second as soon as their breed is known.

Tollers: I find that non-dog people love Dance and think Tollers are super cute. I've yet to have met a dog person who likes the breed though, except for Toller people. Most dog people list a thousand things they don't like about the breed and say they can't stand them and don't understand why I like them so much. To each their own! They can certainly be a quirky breed, and sometimes in a negative way, but I still think they're pretty awesome and a nice Toller is an incredibly fun dog.

Aussies: Yes. Yes, yes, yes. Most people seem to strongly dislike Aussies. They're pushy and in your face, and most people also have the impression that they're super hyper and need to be constantly busy, and many people seem to have been bitten by an Aussie (in fact, I was as well oddly enough). Thankfully though most non-dog people don't recognize Journ as an Aussie (cause she isn't blue merle), so until I tell them, people just think she's a very exuberant cute dog.

So, in short, I appear to have three breeds that are not very well liked generally haha. Oh well, I love them. Good thing there are plenty of breeds to choose from for everybody. There are breeds I don't like too/wouldn't want to live with... though I usually try not to tell their owners that.

Oh, he's so.....skinny. I have no idea why they always pause like that. Maybe to give their lip more time to curl.

Those dogs are stupid/neurotic

Oh, he must be a mix.

With Gambit I just get the "oh I could never live with a dog like that" comments

German Shepherds (especially showlines) have some downright awful things said about them ie they are all crippled abominations. Adele didn't get the memo. ;)

Yeah, I own an Amstaff, so...I get plenty of awful stuff.

When Rhys was a young puppy, we were out walking and an elderly couple were cooing over him. After a moment the woman asked me what kind of dog he is. She didn't understand Amstaff, so I said, "He's a pit bull."

She jerked back and said, "I hope you still like me when you're older and won't attack me." ****ing idiot.

The most annoying comments are the stories I hear from people who own or know pit bull mixes. "Oh, it's all how they're raised!" "Once he hits maturity, that's when he'll start hating people!" "Pits are great guard dogs!"

My biggest pet peeve is hearing people call their pit bull mixes pit bull. No other breed that is mixed (ie, German shepherd or lab mixes) gets called by that breed only. If you don't have papers, it's a mix. I don't call my beagle mix a beagle because he looks somewhat like one.
