Do people ever say negative things about your breed?

You know, I've gotten these comments before with Romeo, but being out and about so much with Fiona..I've been quite taken back by the things people have said to me. At the big show a few weeks ago I probably had no less than five people say to me "Well, it's nice to see a FRIENDLY cattle dog" with total disdain dripping from their voice.

SO MANY people too feel the need to lecture me about the breed. I'm 26, I don't think I look like I am in high school and have my first puppy. "Oh, you know, you have to make sure you REALLY get out there with this breed" "Oh, you better start training this breed NOW", "You better know what you're doing with this breed", "I hope you know how active those dogs are". :wall:

Nah, not really. Most people just say 'oh they're so smart!'. I guess she's too cute and friendly to be accused of eating couches and destroying your house. :)

Well I have Chows.....

In addition, I'm pretty certain about 90% of the people who meet Brooks think that I am extremely stupid and think he's a Poodle when clearly he's a doodle or afghan.

I have toy dogs so.... yes. Constantly get peoples' opinions about how toy dogs can't do anything and are useless or rats or just like a cat, etc etc etc.

You often hear how "crazy" and "spazzy" Labradors are. Not that those are completely untrue, but it does get old that so many people make excuses for what is lack of training/exercise.

I haven't heard anything bad about Chessie's from people who have owned Chessies, but quite a few people outside the breed have said they're nutso. My vet said she has a theory that the more their tail curls, the more insane they are. LOL

Astro is pretty demonstrably half Shar Pei. As in, people who don't know much about dogs overall will still guess that that's what he is, consistently. And people have some pretty negative things to say about Shar Peis on the whole. Namely that they're weird, untrustworthy, not like other dogs, vicious, etc. Kinda the same types of things that tend to be said about Chows, in my experience.

....And his other half is some kind of pitbull/Jack Russell mix. So yeah, I get concerned looks sometimes when I tell people what he is (even if they're in the middle of petting him and he's being friendly). I'm actually surprised I don't get more negative comments on him, but his particular combination came out so goofy-looking that people seem to set aside their preconceptions regularly (though I have had people literally take one look at him and RUN away, even though he was sitting there wagging his tail!).

And I did have someone once stop me to ask "are you going to fix his face? that's one of those dogs that you have to get their faces fixed, right?" Um, no, his face is fine!

Breed? No, but constant negative things about rescue dogs.

I'd like to say I let it roll off my back, but I'm not that zen. It gets to me. Screw them, my dogs rock.

Most people around here don't know what a Vizsla is so they think Penn is a lab.. if they DO know, it's OHHHH I read about them online. They are nuts and impossible to train and run away to chase things.

Yes, and especially from dog people, it would seem. The people I meet out and about are generally incredibly fond of GSDs, but talking to people in the "dog world" and reading discussions... most dislike the breed for one reason or another. It's usually due to bad personal experience so I understand where they're coming from, and it doesn't bother me.

Yep

Usually its size related - their poops much be huge, you let that live in the house with you, who's walking who, got a saddle for that, how much does that thing eat, etc

Or its age related...oh they die young right? while assuming that means like Ivy at almost 5 is ready to drop dead due to age:rolleyes:

Then there is a LOT of the opposite. False positives of the gentle giant and oh they are always friendly

Schnauzers are gross because they have beards. And eyebrows.

Poodles are yappy and beaky.

And all the general small dog negative stuff. Ankle biters, yappy little things that run around pissing everywhere.

My "breed" is the pit bull, so yeah... lots of negativity. "If I pet her, will she bite?" ... dude, she's on her back showing you her belly. "Oh she must not be pure bred, because she's nice." Well no she's not pure, but that has what to do with it? Generally the most negative comments are about pits in general when I dont' have her with me. The typical "they're all evil/unpredictable/will eat your children" stuff.

The good news is that Angel is a great ambassador to her breed, and I've had a lot of people come away from interactions with her saying "wow, I guess they're not all mean"... *sigh* ok I'll take it.

Yes.

Apparently, I own an unpredictable baby killing reactive nerve bag who couldn't think her way out of a paper sack if you hosed it down, lol.

Whatever. When I dropped my car key under my car, I said, "Elsie, go find it," and she crawled under and got it--and we've never worked on retrieving keys. They can suck it. Elsie's perfect.

Hardly anyone knows what they are, at least not well enough to have an opinion (that I've heard) LOL. Most people, even dog people, just assume she's a BC.
