Imagine if you did that for a day shift job? Get off work at say, 5. Drive home........make it there by 5:30. Fix dinner right when you walk in the door, eat, then shower and bed. No relaxing time? No TV with hubby? No kind of "me" time? You might *think* you could do it, but most people can't. It's been ingrained in us to function a certain way, and it's a very hard habit to shake ;)

While it's true places are open in the day, and you can get your errands done with minimal crowds.........think how lonely it is? Most or all your friends are at work, nobody to call or associate with, sometimes it feels like you might as well be the only one on the planet, LOL Not much motivation to get to bed early and get up early now is it?

I've worked all three shifts in my life, and while 2nd shift is not a favorite, I would much rather have that than 3rd shift..........THAT one is even lonelier!
I get what you meant..

I know 2 couples, they voluntarily choose so that one person works 1st shift, and the other works 2nd shift. This way, they don't have to put their children at daycare, can run errands without taking extra time off & still can go to bed together ;). Seems very ideal to me..

Hubby and I are actually considering asking his boss to see if he can switch to 2nd shift, after the baby arrives.

Yep M&M, my cousin and his wife did similar. She is a registered nurse and took 3rd shift at the hospital........he worked day shift, that way someone would be with their son at all times. He was going out the door when she was coming in, LOL they had to make the most of their time in the evening and on days off. You make all sorts of sacrifices for your children, they were blessed to be able to do it.

Now he's grown and in college so they both work days..........happily ever after, LOL

Did you end up getting a citation from the cops? Is your laundry equipment in your apartment?

I lived in a condo (with a w/d) and it never occurred to me to schedule my laundry during daytime hours. I would have been shocked! And calling the cops rather than knocking on your door first and discussing the matter with you is ridiculous.

Great explanation, ACoop, 2nd shift is very lonely. I worked for three years noon to 9-10pm, and at the same time my roommate (and best friend) worked 4am-noon. I also worked weekends, and she had weekends off, so we basically saw each other for a few minutes on the weekends and that was it.

It was nice getting to sleep late, though, I usually slept till about 10:00am. But when you get home at 10 or 10:30, it's pretty difficult to go to bed. I'd usually be up until 1 or 2:00. At least when I got home, my ratties were just waking up for the night. :)

I'm still not a morning person, and now that I have my 8-5 job sometimes I miss sleeping late; but it sure is nice to feel like a "normal" person working this schedule!

calling the cops because someone is doing Laundry is a bit extreme.

Not directed at the OP, but subsequent posts: But I do think people who live in apartments need to be more considerate of their neighbors... I hear the people above me vacuum sometimes, no big deal but I have one neighbor who sings opera so loud it is like she is in my apartment at ALL hours, thats rude.

I am careful to make sure my dogs dont bark, my company is quiet, and that I dont play music loud, others should be just as considerate.

This. I mean really... I have school daily (usually starting around 8 or 9 and ending around 2 or 3) and then work I gotta leave for at 5:30. I do not do laundry at 4/5am. I make it work.
It's a whole different world when you're on your own. You have a thousand more things that have to be done during the day, bills paid, errands run, housework, grocery shopping . . . and most people need at least a couple of hours to unwind after work before they can even think about sleeping.

Doing laundry at 4 or 5 a.m. when you're on second shift is like doing it at 7 or 8 p.m. when you're living in the same time frame as most of the world.

It seems really rude to call the police without at least mentioning it to a neighbor. However, having lived in an apartment for years, I just accepted that some noise from neighboring apartments was the norm. I even ignored weekend parties from my neighbors..I think unless someone was being beaten I'd probably just hush:p. Unless you're drying shoes in there, I cannot see how a washer/dryer noise could be that objectionable.

I will say that when I first moved into my apartment, I hadn't even had any pets there yet and the guy downstairs complained. Apparently the person living in my apartment before me was a very elderly woman who barely walked around, so he was used to that. He ended up moving out right afterwards and I got quite normal neighbors:p

Calling the cops. Americas natl passtime. That guy would have dog poo on every door knob on his place and handle on his car. I respond to chickenshit acts in kind.

No cops at my door yet, but give it a couple more days we will see if the cops show up. All though Mr. Money bags was up due to a very vocal cat that was on our deck that wanted to come in our place when I got home at 1:45am not my cat.

Having a 2nd shift job does suck I don't really get to talk to anyone that much due to the weird hours I have. It's also the reason why I don't do my dog forums as much as I use to since when I get on there is no one to really to talk to. One of the perks of it is when I get off work that there is only like 20 people in walmart so no people in the way or large lines. I now can't really stand on the weekends to go shopping at normal hours due to the crowds it's much nicer at night.

Back to the laundry thing for me doing it at 3 to 5am is normal to me. I just would like to know why he decide after so long of me doing my laundry at that time is all a sudden a problem. I do try to keep my noise down in respect for others, but a washer come on.

If you're not allowed to do laundry at 5am, they ought not be able to make noise during oyur regular sleep hours. It's only fair.

At my apartment the laundry room is open 24/7 but there is a sign that says not to use it between 10pm and 6am. But if I need clean clothes NOW I'm not going to go halfway across town to do laundry when I have the laundry room literally next door to my room. The people below me don't tell their squealing kids to STFU when I want to sleep. (Both apartments below me are studios like mine. Each one has no less than 4 ro 5 people living in it...probably more)

I work 9pm to 6am. Know how many idiots are noisy during when I sleep? Thundering about with brick feet? Screaming children beside my house? Pft. I live a different life than you. I don't go out of my way to make a ton of noise but eh. I'm allowed to walk about and do simply things that everyone else does. Just because I do mine at different hours doesn't mean I'm not entitled to use the washing machine, dish washer etc. I'm not hosting a krumping party upstairs. Relax a little.

Oh, you should check in with us, BL . . . there's usually a core gang on at weird hours, and there's a ton to catch up on ;)

Oh, and we need some new pics, please? Got any of Cadie for the Pittie Grins thread?
