Feeling guilty drying my clothes at 4am.

Thanks to my stupid neighbor who called the cops on me for doing laundry at 5am two weeks ago.:yikes: Now I can't help to wonder what else am I'm doing to loud because a washer was keeping him up. My washer was not off center and is against my bathroom wall.

Mr.Money bags that don't work better not call the cops on me again for my dryer drying to loud cause I'm not paying a fee for cleaning or doing laundry. I work 2nd shift when else I'm going to get laundry done before I go to work because I sure don't the time when I get up.

Oh man! Did you get it done without incident? It's rough when you're working odd shifts, I did it for years :( Town noise ordinances are usually from like 10pm-6am and that totally leaves the odd shift people in the cold.

I think doing laundry violating noise ordinances is just a tad extreme, LOL

There are things I miss about apartment living......maintenance, yard work.........but close quarter neighbors are NOT one of them!!

From when to when do you work? Just some food for thought- if your neighbor actually calls the cops in the middle of the night, they probably got woken up from noises from your washer setup. I am not saying I don't understand where you are coming from- and it would have been certainly nicer of them to come and talk to you first before calling the cops.

LIving in an apartment is accepting the fact that there will be noise from the people beside below or above. I spent 4 years in one, never want to do it again, but when I was there I knew that people live and work at different schedules than me. Sorry your neighbor doesn't realize that.

You probably woke him up. Now yes, you say that you work 2nd shift (whatever that means) but have you thought about his schedule/job? I mean, he may have to be up early in the morning, and being woken up by somebody doing laundry would **** me off too. Now yes, taking it to the cops is a bit extreme, but it may not have been the first time it happened. If you do not have time to do laundry when you wake up before work, if you slept while you are doing laundry now, could you not wake up earlier and do it? I mean, you could do a load of wash, and then throw it in the dryer and have the dryer running as you are leaving. or come home, do the wash, and then do the dry while you are leaving?

oh wait, I just saw that you said that he does not work. He could have other things to do still... are you positive that he does not work?

A dryer is not loud enough to be considered in the noise ordinance. Sounds like you've got a real grump for a neighbor.

Would it/could it help to introduce yourself, explain your shift, and ask if there's anyway you could make it quieter for him? Might help for him to know WHY and that you are willing to try and keep the noise down.

Another thought, you may have to do all your laundry for the week on your day off. Sucky? Yes, but better than fines, LOL

I wouldve been pissed to if I would have been woken up...

If you work 2nd shift why not get up a little earlier to do laundry, or do it right when you get home? I dont personally see the need for doing laundry at 4/5AM in the morning..

Oh, good grief, a normal washer or dryer isn't loud and if dude is such a light sleeper maybe he needs to sleep with a white noise generator.

Even if the washing machine was off balance and jumps all over the place, calling the cops without first saying something to you (politely) was beyond the pale. Wonder who lit the fuse on his tampon?

I've worked 2nd shift (3-11, usually) and there is no good time to do anything. Your whole life is backwards. The only thing worse is swing shift.

This. I mean really... I have school daily (usually starting around 8 or 9 and ending around 2 or 3) and then work I gotta leave for at 5:30. I do not do laundry at 4/5am. I make it work.

YOu have the right to do your laundry when you want to do your laundry if it's in your space. The only time I have called the police on a neighbor, and I have done it twice, is when someone was either beating the crap out of a child, or two adults hitting each other so hard glass was breaking and furniture was falling over, and there was a child up there as well. THat's when i call. NOt if someone has an occasional party and never for running a dishwasher, or a washing machine. THat's nonsense. What did the police say?

I have called the police too smkie. Once when I saw (what I thought was a stranger) someone climbing through a window of my neighbor's house...........and another time when two drunk idiots were fist fighting in the street  Those kind of calls I don't even hesitate.

I HAVE had to call over noise before, but it wasn't something as crazy as a washing machine, LOL........it was yet ANOTHER all night stereo jam from the neighbors across the street and I wasn't the only one to call it in. Sometimes you have to make the call because you just can't take anymore!!!

I've lived here for a year and half I've always done my laundry that early in the morning without ever having a complaint or cops at my door till now. He was living here when we moved in to this place. I work from 4:30 pm to 1: 30 am sometime 2am I stay up for a few hours when I get home because I'm not the type that can come home then straight to bed.

Yeah he doesn't work my friend use to work with his sister who told her he doesn't work he has enough money to sit pretty. He also doesn't live that much at the apartment he lives most of his time at his girl friend's house the apartment is just where he crashes when they fight or needs to get away. We know he isn't there much last year during the winter we didn't see any foot prints to his door in the snow for like 3 weeks there is no way someone can stand to be in a studio apartment that long without leaving for something. He's lucky I don't start calling the cops on same song over and over at 7am in morning since we our bed is besides hisl living room/bedroom wall.

My boyfriend talke to the sheriff he didn't like my BF laughting at the fact we got called on disturbing the peace by doing laundry. He kept telling BF it was a serious matter if it was so serious why did it take the sheriff 3 days later from us doing laundry to come to our door. I tell you one thing if he calls the cops on me for taking a shower at 5am he can kiss it because I'm not going to bed feeling greasy from working with turkey bacon.

Why is it so?

I've never worked 2nd shift, but I'd always envy those who do! When you come home after 11, maybe you'll need an hour to shower then you'd go to bed at around the same times everybody else do (midnight - 8 a.m.) - then, when you wake up, you'll have a WHOLE DAY to do everything you need (when those who work 1st shift is stuck at work & by the time they come home for the day, everything is closed!)

I think 3rd shift is worst, because you'd have to stay awake when everybody else sleeps & sleep when everyone else is awake.. so your internal clock is messed up.

Often times, second shift is 3pm to 11am. My ex fiance worked second shift at a liquor distributor for a while and his hours were 4pm to 5am. Come home, shower, crash and there just wasn't enough time to do much of anything between getting up and having to go to work again. If he had laundry to do, it either waited until the weekend or he did it at 6am. He was lucky though, he could wear any old thing. For those who have to have a uniform, it's a bit more difficult.

There was a time in my life when I worked a regular 9 to 5 job and also a midnight to 5 am job. I often had no idea what time or day it was.

Shortly before we got married, my husband was told he'd be laid off from his 1st shift job, so he went out and found a 3rd shift job. The first job decided to keep him for 3 more months... so for that three months, he did exactly that. It was very tough, not only on him, but on his family as well. I hardly saw him during that time!

Imagine if you did that for a day shift job? Get off work at say, 5. Drive home........make it there by 5:30. Fix dinner right when you walk in the door, eat, then shower and bed. No relaxing time? No TV with hubby? No kind of "me" time? You might *think* you could do it, but most people can't. It's been ingrained in us to function a certain way, and it's a very hard habit to shake ;)

While it's true places are open in the day, and you can get your errands done with minimal crowds.........think how lonely it is? Most or all your friends are at work, nobody to call or associate with, sometimes it feels like you might as well be the only one on the planet, LOL Not much motivation to get to bed early and get up early now is it?

I've worked all three shifts in my life, and while 2nd shift is not a favorite, I would much rather have that than 3rd shift..........THAT one is even lonelier!
