Ok, first of all, I am not a HUGE pet lover. They're ok. My husband and oldest son (of 5 children) have long wanted a dog. Now that my youngest are starting to toddle I concieded with some stipulations. They were: 1. NO puppies. I don't have the time or energy to go through the 2 years it takes to get through the hyper destructive phase. 2. Must already be house broken 3. Had to be small to medium size due to limited space. 4. Had to prove to be tolerant of small children. (though I will not allow the dog to be picked on by the little ones) Anyhow, my brother and his fiance came across a stray corgi that met all my requirements. We took her in. She's been great.

My question...What to do about disgusting doggie habits that I cannot abide. Tonight Corgi (also her name), was dragging her bottom across my livingroom rug. :yikes: I can't have this since my babies crawl, roll, and play on this same rug. Not to mention that it's new and I'm extreemly fond of it.

What can I do to keep her from doing this? Why is she doing this? Am I just going to have to ban her from the family room (I don't want to do that if I can avoid it.)?

Please, any advice is welcome.

I know some dogs do that when they need their anal glands released. I have only seen my dog do it when he is sick and has tummy trouble.

Maybe try a visit to the groomer to see if you can have the glands checked?

^^^^ agree , or it could be worms . Stool check to vet and check glands . If this is the worse your kids come in contact with , you're lucky !

Also, chck her bum and make sure it's not poopy or encrusted w/ something. That will also cause it, as no one likes stuff stuck to their butts.

For your rug, I'd suggest getting a green machine... awesome little rug-cleaners, truly amazing. Then cleaning your carpet with it.. Anal gland secretions, worm eggs, and poo are NOT things you want on your carpet. Two of them stink, all are gross.

I am willing to bet it is the anal glands need expressing--take your dog to the groomer and perhaps have them show you how it's done. I now do Wrigley's myself--every time he starts to boot' scoot' that's what the problem is.

I agree with the others. Anal glands can become impacted, and this could be the cause of her scooting. Worms is also a possiblity. Take her to the vet and get her dewormed and anal glands checked. Make sure you tell the vet about her bum scooting.
Also feeding a good diet can "help" prevent this. A dog with firm stools should normally "express" anal glands naturally while having a bowel movement. But some of the smaller breeds still seem to have problems.
I also would NOT ask the vet to reccommend a food as some of them think foods like science diet are the best. If You want a good food, just ask on this forum, and you will get great answers and an explanation of "why".
Just curious...is she spayed? If not, you are in for a real mess if she comes into season. Much worse than occasional bum scooting. :D

I'd definaetly take your little pup into the vet with a fresh stool sample. Get them th analyze the stool sample and check her anal glands.

Her glands could be impacted, full and just needing to be expressed or she could have a variety of worm types.. round, hook, whip, tape etc etc..

Intestinal parasites are zoonotic which means they can be transmitted to people as well, so practice good hygeine until you get your pup checked out.

Worms are fairly easy to fix with the proper medication. So no worries :)

I bet you just freaked out someone (OP) :D
But Summer is right, I would also like to add, that happens very rarely and is not common.. :)

LOL Only trying to inform..

it CAN happen, but as Julie said - its rare.

It happens more with kids because they roll around with the dogs, letting the dogs lick themselves and then their face..
Usually most people dont allow THAT to happen lol

Its just all the more reason to get your pup checked out for a clean bill of health :)

in case it's worms, make sure your children wash their hands often..and I do mean often. worm eggs may be on her, and it can then be transmitted to children when they touch the pup. not to sound gross, but then the eggs can be transmitted via hand to mouth. it's good practice to routinely have your dog checked for worms, and I agree with having the anal glands examined. just a sidenote...I bet the dog will end up being your best friend. LOL it's always the person that seems less interested that gets the dog's attention. :) soon you'll be wrapped around that little paw.

I would definitely have the dog checked out. If it's the anal glands, that can really cause problems. My Dacshund just had abcessed anal glands and has been on antibiotics for a month. I would take the dog to the vet asap.
