What do you guys think of rescues labeling dogs as "cocakpoos" and other designer dog names instead of "cocker spaniel/Poodle mix"??

I was just wondering because i know our shelter just names them as the actual mix they are; such as cocker/poodle mix not cockapoo. This man came in and asked if we had any "cockapoo's" I told him that we had a cocker/poodle mix. I didn't make a big deal out of it because I do want the dogs adopted, but it bugs me when people ask for "cockapoos" and "yorkiepoos" and the such.

I'm also really glad they don't name them as cockapoos. I think any rescue who does is just supporting designer breeds, which I don't like. But then again I can't help but think more people will adopt if their names are "cockapoo" and such rather then "Cocker/poodle mix".

What do you guys think?

I personally don't like it when they are called cockapoos, labradoodles, ect. I call them what they really are, but the shelters here do not. There's oodles of doodles in the pound and shelter. They do seem to get adopted out, much much faster than the pug mixes ect, but that's just my opinion.

Good question ;)

Personally Cockapoo sounds more like a bird name than anything. Like a Cockatoo that poops a lot... I used to work at Petland and I hated the goofy names they up with for the dogs. Especially things like shitzapoo (whatzapoo?--sounds more like a new slang profanity) and lots of other goofy names, mostly combined with poodle.

I don't really like it...the humane society here doesn't do that, they label them as the mixes they are.

True, they may get adopted quicker if they are a "cockapoo"...but if a person will adopt a dog labeled as cockapoo but won't adopt one labeled as a cocker/poodle mix, that would worry me a little bit.

Isn't it true if they aren't recognized by the AKC, then they are really just a mix breed?

That's true, and that worries me a bit too. That people will adopt any dog that has a designer label just because of the name and not know what they are getting into or not take care of it properly. Not that everyone who adopts designer dogs aren't going to take care of it, just it worries me when people go for a dog just for the label it has. Good point!

Well I don't know about just the AKC since there are other breeds recognized by things like the UKC and I believe some breeds aren't recognized by the AKC and are still a breed. But yeah, designer dogs are just mix breeds.

We have neighbors who bought a labradoodle and the way they talked about the dog you would have thought it came with papers. Believe me they spent alot of money on a dog they could have gone to either the pound or rescue and got. Don't get me wrong he is a really cute dog with a great personality.

I agree. I hate it when I'm looking at rescues and I see some ridiculous made-up word as their breed.

That's exactly how I feel. I think that just having those names are attracting people who might not be the most responsible dog owners and are just caught up in the designer dog craze. If they weren't, they'd have no problem adopting one listed as the actual mix without a fancy name.

For some reason, Petfinder has the option to list a dog as a "Cockapoo" but not any other mixes. I wonder why .

I despise "designer dogs" and anyone that breeds or promotes them. Mixes are mixes and they always will be. A good ol' fashioned mutt is just that, a mutt. Loveable just the same, but don't give it a designer goober fad name just becaue your poodle boinked your pug. :)
