Dr2little, I didn't mean to come off as bashing anyone who buys a mixed breed dog, at all. I'm really happy to see that you went to great lengths to find a breeder who you are comfortable with! I work at a feed store, so I do see "designer" dogs occasionally (not as many as I would working at Petsmart) and I would never put a dog/person down for that. I know many more people who have rescued designer breeds than bought them from BYB's or otherwise. I just, feel that rescuing is #1, unless buying from some one who tests and actively shows/exhibits/works their dogs. Very strongly!

I wasn't trying to make a point about "designer" breeds being baaad. I know people rant about that tons and tons and tons. I just wanted to say that I, personally, won't be mad at anyone for buying one... I only suggest that rescue be a 1st priority, for adopting mixed breed dogs.

What sets 'designer dogs' and mixed breeds apart (in my opinion) is the intentions of the breeder.

It's the fact that 'designer dog breeders' are trying to pass off their specifically bred litters of puppies as purebred dogs, and charging hundreds of dollars for them. They solely breed their dogs for a healthy profit, and will continue to breed and breed their dogs purposely. These breeders have found a niche market, and will sell their dogs to unsuspecting people who don’t know any better.

A mongrel/mutt/mixed breed dog is usually due to people breeding their dogs to have a ‘once-off' litter, or could be due to an accidental litter (mixed breeds could be from stray dogs, too). Usually someone who is selling a mixed breed litter will not claim to be a breeder, and will not claim their dogs are purebred.

LabBreeder, I think you’re misinterpreting what I’m trying to say. I never said a ‘designer dog’ was any less special than a mutt or purebred dog. I think all dogs (whatever their breeds may be) are just as special as one another.

My feelings about breeders of "Designer Dogs" is the same as it is for the breeders of "Purebred Dogs," most breeders out out to make a buck from litters of puppies. I have seen just as many so called reputable breeders (not sure who gets to decide who is reputable) who show dogs to start a name for themselves then breed their show dogs or kennel dogs and sell them at very high prices with no consideration of health or temperment issues. Breeding a purebred dog does not make a breeder any more reputable than breeders of mutts/designer dogs. People will always use whatever means available to make a buck. I have shared my life with dogs and have yet to have a litter produced (getting dogs fixed helps eliminate unwanted litters).

I think there are almost as many BYB of purebreds as there are of mutts and all you have to do is get online and look for the rescue leagues for any purebred breed and you'll see that many people (who I am sure call themselves reputable) are raising litters of pups that create more dogs than there are homes for. A BYB is a BYB if they're raising more puppies than there are homes for.

Now, as for mutts, I love mine and I am not the least bit ashamed to share my home with them no matter what they're called or where they came from.

What matters more to me is that each person who takes on the responsibility of sharing their life with a dog give the dog a loving environment and a meaningful life. It doesn't matter if a person shares their life with a mutt or purebred, what matters is that the relationship between the dog and human is a great relationship.

My guess, and I have nothing to back it, is that there are MORE BYB of purebreds than mixed breeds/designer breeds/mutts. I think this because alot of people are out to make money, and purebreds are considered more desirable. The more popular the breed, the more unknowledgeable breeders are out there trying to make money off the dogs.

I agree that there are probably more BYB of purebreds than designer breeds. And frankly I despise both kinds.

I think you hit the nail right on the head:D 3 of my 5 dogs like I said before, are "breeder" neglect rescues. Every dog that I have ever been a guardian to has been alterted promptly..including my "labradoodle" from Australia Sophie. All of the pups from Sophies litter had homes prior to birth and were sold on a spay/neuter contract. While I adore Sophie, she is and will be my one and only dog from a breeder and although she is from long lines, she is my beautiful "mixed breed". A good majority of the 1000's of dogs that I train every year are of mixed/rescue origin and they are all as wonderful as any "pure bred" (which is also of mixed origin) and if anything they excel in training, often "top of the class".:)
While there are many terrific breeders out there who truly deserve to be deemed responsible, too many are no better that "designer" breeders who produce to meet demand.

Okay . . . Good discussion!

But how 'bout some more photos????? :D

I'm feeling left out . . . Bimmer qualifies - he's absolutely a one-off and was most assuredly designed just for me, but the Riot Grrrrrls certainly aren't "designer." They are, however, designING

Renee, I put up pictures of Aubrey, so you most certainly put up pictures of Bimmer. The thread got changed to "mixed breed owners" a few pages back anyway.

Well said, Swiftwind. It's not the dogs we're against, it's the breeders.

Cass.
Thanks Cass! :)

Anyway, since this has turned into a mixed breed thread.. here's Harley, my Jack Russell Terrier x Maltese (personally I don't see any Maltese in him besides his long-ish fur). He's 10 years old..

Everyone posting pictures here, is your dog actually a "designer dog"? Just because it's a mixed breed/mutt doesn't mean it's a designer dog.QUOTE]
a mixed breed is the same as a designer dog. the only difference is that some mixed breeds have more than 2 purebred parents like designer dogs do. just rescue a dog from a shelter/HS instead of buying one from a "breeder".
