Verbena has now gotten demodectic mange for the third time. The first time the vet put her on amoxycillin, which she was allergic to so they switched her to ivermectin. She stayed clear for a couple of months. Then when she got it the second time, they put her back on the ivermectin, but she quit eating so they gave her an excessive dose of heartworm medications. She was clear for only a couple months more. Since this is the third time, they are suggesting a dip that costs us more than we can afford so we were looking for other alternatives. My mom said that her brother had used a mixture of bleach and water to kill some fungus off of his dog, do you think this will work for the mites as well? Or how effective will a lime sulfur dip be, since it is the cheaper alternative to the other dip? She is a little over a year old and we don't think we'll ever be over this problem so we need the cheapest thing that will work that will be the easiest on her health.

Did the vets do a full bloodwork and all that stuff? Mange sets in when the mites get to "rule" Everyone has mange mites. You do, the dog does (as you know) theyre everywhere! You get mange (or scabies in humans) when the immune system can not control them anymore. I'd make sure the vets are 100% positive there isnt an immunity problem. If they are, you can treat her at home: (Remember, I'm not a vet, and this treatment is not aproved by the who ever aproves those things? FDA?

Go to the feed store, buy a bottle of Ivomec for cattle. It is usually $30-$40. It is ivermectin. Then go to Walgreens and get 1 cc diabetic needles. Each "10" on the needle is 1/10 of a cc. For every 10 pounds, you need to fill it to the "10" line. Shoot the ivomec into a rolled up piece of bread. ( you can also give it SQ (like they do for a shot) but it kinda burns them, and they yelp and cry)(Hot dog works too, but it just "stays" there, doesnt absorb.) Repeat in 1 week, for a month. Depending on her weight, give a human zinc pill. (make sure its zinc gluconate...not sure on spelling. I use Nature Made, but thats just me) I use about 30 mg for 50 lbs. This is to help the hair grow back. When your done, quite buying heartworm meds, you can use the Ivomec too! (You only need a drop of that stuff!) This is what I do, but if your not comfortable doing this, I understand, not many people are.

They've not done any blood work but they know that her immune system is not controlling them because she has too many mites on her body. They do a skin scraping and determine when they are out of control by how many mites are in the skin. Thanks for your suggestions.

I'd have them check for anything that might be supressing her immune system. It might be some as simple as a bacteria, or all the way up to cancer. If this is the 3rd time they've come back, either something is wrong with her body, and/or the vets didnt treat her right. Did the vets give her weeky doses of ivermectin for 1 month? If she just got one dose, this could be the reason. Ivermectin is only good for about 1 month. I know you said that you're running tight on the money, I can understand! Maybe ask the vets if they can take some kind of payment plan?

Yeah she was on ivermectin twice a day for 3 months. We slowly upped the doses until she hit a certain amount and that was the amount she got continually after that until she stopped eating altogether. We tried it with bread and any other treat that we could inject the medicine into and she would usually deny the treat. She got to where she denied everything whether it had ivermectin in it or not.

when we can get Innova we do, but the closest store is 300 miles away. So she usually eats Iams because that's the best food that's in this area.

I have been giving her two treatments of bleach a day. Today is the second day, and she has stopped losing hair. When I gave her the first two treatments yesterday, I was still pulling out gobs of hair when I was running my fingers through it. Today barely any hair came out. Now if the hair grows back, I know that the treatment truly works.

Bleach?!?!? I sure hope you're using a really, really, diluted ratio- atleast 30:1. Perferably something even more diluted then that 40:1 or even 50:1. I think there are way better options out there!!!!! Heck, I wont even CLEAN with bleach, let alone put it on my dog!!!! (If I have to wear gloves while using it, I'm not using it!)
Since this has been such a problem, I'd take her back to the vet and make sure her immune system is up to par. It sounds like something serious is going on for her to be like this for so long!

My dog's fur is thinning on her chest and her belly got some slight rashes, but otherwise she seems fine. She scratches from time to time, but then, which dog doesn't? I am thinking of taking her to the vet on Monday morning, but then I've never had good experiences with vets. They tend to charge you a lot for things that don't really work. Should I wait and observe, or should I just see what big bill the vet is trying to hand me?
