How do you know when they are crying/barking to go potty vs attention. I have a little guy 14 wks that doesn't like to be leased(around coffee table when in living room or in cage when not sleeping and he will cry/howl/bark/whine whichever you want to call it. I don't want to mistake his having to go to the bathroom for his wanting attention. Can you assume that he doesn't have to go if her has recently been out. I do not want to give him the attention when he is acting like this but with doing potty training (we have only had him going on 2 weeks from a puppy store) I can't have him run around when I am doing other things. He isn't asking to go out at all. I am so new at all of this and am trying to do my best just don't really totally know what to do. He is in his kennel all night 10-5:30 and then during the day from 8-330 he has done really well with toileting there a couple of accidents(pee) on his chuck(hospital bed type just to protect his bed) but has never pooped in there. Any and all advice people have is greatly apprecitated. I am unable to go home for lunch but leave as late as I can in the morning and my daughter is home no later than 330 to let him out. Like I said I am new and will take all advice given out from those that know. Also hates being outside alone not that I want to leave him out there alone but have had to a couple of times in fenced in kennel area.

Thanks

My puppy is about the same age (16 weeks). There is something different about his crying/barking when he has to go out to potty. More desperate. He gets a little frantic and paces a lot. He may nip if you walk by him. You will probably get to know the difference with more time - two weeks isn't very long - but like babies, I think puppies have different barks/cries/whines for different things. It takes time to get to know them. Also, if you are going to confine him and put him on a leash, I'm sure you take him out first. If so, then it is unlikely he has to go again right away. Good Luck and enjoy your puppy.....

Yup. I agree with bumhouse.

Initially, I had zero ability to predict when is she going to potty. I learnt the difference when I observed her for a few times when she "pottied" in the crate. She'd usually do the same thing - walk to a corner, stand up at one corner etc.

Observe your pup and I believe you'd find a pattern - her own ritual.

you will start to notice the difference my puppy is now 5 months old and she will go to my bedroom door and whine's when she needs to go out so i think as they get older it gets easier.

Chances are if he has JUST been out and went to the bathroom, he wants attention. But puppies NEED A LOT of attention. Interacting w/ him and playing w/ him, starting some training are all essential to having a happy healthy puppy.

I do not want to give him the attention when he is acting like this but with doing potty training (we have only had him going on 2 weeks from a puppy store) I can't have him run around when I am doing other things. He needs time...and even though you are busy, puppies especially are a huge responsibility. You shouldve thought about adopting an older dog that was already house trained...but since you do have your puppy at home, the only thing thats going to work is commitment.

He is in his kennel all night 10-5:30 and then during the day from 8-330 he has done really well with toileting there a couple of accidents(pee) on his chuck(hospital bed type just to protect his bed) but has never pooped in there. 10-5:30 is WAY TOO LONG for a puppy not to go out, especially when your potty training. My dog Katie is fully housetrained, she is about 8 months old, and I still have to take her out in the middle of the night sometimes. She wakes me up for it, and she is not small like a pug. Your pup should be taken out every few hours, given the command "go pee, go potty", then rewarded greatly for going. Also 8-330 is too long for him to be crated w/out a potty break. Have you looked into having a service come by for 10 min. just to let him out? Or a neighbor? Someone???

Like I said I am new and will take all advice given out from those that know. Also hates being outside alone not that I want to leave him out there alone but have had to a couple of times in fenced in kennel area.
Stick around here you will find a LOT of really helpful advice. You said you got your dog from a puppy store, if you stay here you will realize thats the last place you should get a dog. Also, with your current situation, it doesnt really sound like you have the time for a puppy...Its just like adding a kid to the family, they need time, attention, love, and training. Good luck!

Thanks

First of all I would like to thank everyone for their advice. Although I will state that my family has plenty of time to give to a puppy. I understand the responsibility and feel that the hours I have are fine as does my vet. Things are going good. I think I was worried about things to much it has only been 2 weeks. I am cathing on to him and for the most part the only accidents has has had have been when I either moved to slow or missed the sign but they are getting closer to the door so maybe he is starting to understand. He still doesn't like going out in the morning I think he doesn't like to the wet cold ground cause any other time he loves it. The crate is like his room now at least he doesn't complain about going in there anymore. Again thanks...Pugglelover
