I have a foster puppy who desperately needs to gain weight. She wasn't eating for a while, but thanks to a suggestion in the other forum I tried baby food and she's eating that. I was so happy!

Anyway, my question. I was considering giving her some heavy cream by the syringe I use for her medicine to help her gain weight since she's really underweight and not feeling good due to kennel cough.

I don't know if this might hurt her digestion, so I thought it would be a good idea to ask here before I do anything. I don't want to constipate her or give her diarrhea. Right now her stools are solid and she's peeing regularly, so she's good there.

Will cream help her or hurt her?

I personally wouldn't use heavy cream, too tough on the digestive system. Good balanced diet should show some results soon! Good luck getting the weight on the pup, and I hope she is over KC soon.

I'm not sure about cream... but, a very healthy and easy way to add weight is by feeding satin balls!

5 pounds ground meat
5 cups Total whole grain cereal
5 cups oats (slow cooking type)
2½ cups raw wheat germ
¾ cup oil
¾ cup molasses
6 eggs
5 packets gelatin
2 ½ tablespoons Solid Gold Seameal supplement (optional)

Mix all ingredients together thoroughly like you would a meatloaf.
Roll into balls no larger than 1 inch diameter.
Divide into at least 6 separate containers or bags. Freeze. Thaw as needed for feeding.

Easy? Yes. Healthy? No!

The healthiest way to help the dog gain weight is slowly and gradually. Just increase the amount of her normal food.

hrrm... well, I would consider them a healthy addition to regular kibble. I'm not saying feed the dog pounds of this a day to pack on weight all at once, but it can supplement the diet. I know several rescuers who use this recipe for building up the energy & health of underweight dogs.

I would add probiotics to your pup's diet. Probiotic are the healthy microorganisms found in the intestine that help the body absorb nutrients and prevent diarrhea and other stomach upsets.

I used to work at a Pet Supplies "Plus." I found that a lot of dogs that were having trouble gaining weight did great on Eagle Pack Chicken Holistic, which is a puppy formula. I don't know what breed of puppy you have, but if it is not a large breed I would try Eagle Pack Chicken Holistic. It contains probiotics and all the bells and whistles. The way I explain it is some dogs need more than the bare minimum nutrition for the average dog and Eagle Pack Holistic Chicken with the probiotics and fruits and veggies is far more than the bare minimum.
