I got home from work at around 1 pm and let Traveler out on the zipline in the back yard and then went back inside. A few minutes later I hear him barking and since he normally is dead quiet when he's outside I went outside and he was over by the side of the house but came running over ready to go inside like normal.

So I get back in and just sit down when Kaylee who is laying in the bay window explodes. Now, she's a barker and is always going off at something but this was different. I honestly thought someone must have been trying to get into the house the way she was acting, she was trying to go through the window. So I get a hold of her long enough to look out the window just in time to see a Coyote butt running away. At first I thought it was a neighbors dog since they are out all the time but nope, that was a Coyote in the middle of the day in the yard.

Once I got the dogs calmed down I had my break down. We get a lot of them at night during the summer so I know the drill and have dealt with them but I never see them in the middle of the day and in winter. Traveler was out, alone, in an unfenced area with a Coyote stalking around my yard and he is just perfect lunch size.

I am so happy I heard him barking. The what ifs were running around my head

I would still be shaking! Those buggers are everywhere now. They even come into my community (small city smack up against a large city) so I have yet to have a dog outside when I am not outside.

We had one brave the house a few weeks ago to try to make a snack of Junior and Mitzi, who were cowering in terror in their cat house. Thank God it is raised up off the ground and deep enough that a dog head can't penetrate the cat doors too quickly. Chloe and Rose both were going NUTS at the windows (and the cat house is a foot away from a window) and it didn't even phase the stupid thing. It didn't take off until my sister opened up the door and yelled at it (yes, not the smartest thing in the world to do, but she's not one for quick thinking on her feet...).

Haven't seen one since, thankfully. Rose has amped up coyote patrols and often wants to head out at dusk just to sit in the front yard and bark. It works - we'll hear them off in the neighboring feilds, but none in the yard. Hopefully they don't get braver. Rose and Blackie could handle them in their prime, but Blackie is gone now and Rose isn't as spry as she used to be. Chloe'd probably do a good job at keeping them way, too, but she's stupid and wouldn't know when to stop chasing and end up getting hurt.

Oh my gosh, that's so scary! I'm glad all ended okay.

I worry about this too. I never put Jackson outside alone anymore since seeing a fox in our yard! I have a 50ft line for him outside on our 3 acres that I used to leave him on for 5 minutes max, but I no longer even do that anymore. Things can just happen TOO quickly. :(

That's terrifying.

There are coyotes in my area too. Once, I was walking Tiffany and I turned the corner to go into my driveway...only to find a coyote standing in the middle of my driveway. :yikes: I couldn't see it until I turned because it was blocked by some bushes. I picked Tiffany up and made a lot of noise while I backed away. It ran off but geez it was scary.

It really did shake me up a lot. Just picturing if I hadn't heard Traveler. Coyotes are seriously afraid of nothing and these suburban ones practically knock on your door. So no more letting the dogs out alone now

You're in Wheaton? That's like 25 minutes from me. I'm in Bloomingdale :D

The coyotes in Wheaton are terrible. Didn't they organize a cull over the summer?

Oh but Linds don't you know! Coyotes are harmless and won't touch dogs  I can't tell you how many times I've seen that on other boards.

Very scary! I'm glad no one was hurt and the dogs didn't take off after it. My JRT was attacked by a coyote in the middle of the day, when my step dad was outside with her operating an electric saw. Unbelievable!

Unreal

One time at our dog park my friend and I were there later than normal so it was dusk and we were out waiting for our ride. She had her cocker/golden mix and I had Hannah and Kaylee. Hannah went nuts all of a sudden facing infront of us into this shadowed part. Well as time goes on she is slowly moving her direction of barking in a circle and low and beyhold a nice size Coyote walks into the parking lot and starts circling closer. Hannah and Kaylee are both 90ish pounds and my friend and I are no push overs. It kept coming closer till we were on the bench ready to throw a prong collar at it and then it left (and didn't leave in a hurry)

We contacted the park rangers about it because it was acting odd and a dog or person was going to get hurt. They told us they don't approach humans

it's a good thing we have all of them to tell us what they don't do isn't it?

I'm almost afraid to ask, did they kill your JRT? Or did she get away?

We just need you here with your guns to make it all better :rofl1:

Traveler might have been able to outrun and maneuver one if he hadn't been tied up. Though, the coyote might have been struck dumb by his sheer awesomeness :p

She got away but was very seriously injured - all I'll say is that stuff was out that wasn't supposed to be! She went through a very major surgery and a long recovery time, but recovered just fine. She could tender around where she was injured so you had to be gentle when picking her up or rough housing with her, but it never held her back any and she went right back to being a little terror!

That's scary. I'm glad Traveler was okay.

We have coyotes, but they're very very shy (maybe because I live in a rural area?). Either way I've only ever seen one and it was in the woods.

Glad you heard him too! They have been really bad this year, all year, but especially now with the bad winter everywhere it seems! I used to see one or two on my way home every few weeks before (unless I went out to the country or out looking for them) but now I see almost nightly and most of the time it's more than one a night. I don't know what is up this year but they have for sure had a bit of a population explosion and they are definitely getting more brave along with that. Not ok, but glad everyone is ok!

Yep! I'm close by. There are tons of coyotes in the Chicago area. There was a cull here in Wheaton for a while, after a coyote jumped over someone's fence and killed their dog. :(

Wow that sounds very scary! Glad he is OK :)

I'm so thankful we don't have coyotes here.
But you have the Loch Ness monster!

Actually, even in spite of the risks, I am thankful for the abundance of wild life in this country. It is enriching in many ways. We can live harmoniously along side wild animals if we use prudence.

I'm glad you saved Traveler. Very scary when they get so bold like that. The country coyotes seem to be more shy than the urban ones who get so habituated to people. Most all wild life gets more dangerous where there is a higher human population. At any rate, I too stay very close to my dogs when they're outside. That's a terrible story about the coyote jumping the fence.:yikes:

That's super scary!

Yesterday I had a similar incident when I was walking in our "city forest" called Fish Creek, which is a haven for coyotoes and deer. Bears and Cougars have been spotted before too, but very uncommon. I was with a dog named Boomer, he's a 9 month old, 85lb Lab. We were going along the trail and came upon a area where a duck had been recently killled, so we decided to turn around. Mostly because that was the same area McGruff had reacted to the weekend prior when I was walking him there. (Sniffing the air, hackles up.) As we were backtracking about 10 minutes in, Boomer stopped dead in his tracks, growling and barking. I couldn't see anything, but it was enough to make my blood run cold, especially since Boomer was clearly freaked out. He didn't want to go forward at all. Clearly something had been following us along the trail if we "met them" coming back. So I diverted to the closest bike path and took a shortcut.. lol.
