My opinion is this - it's called collateral damage.
The kids might be delinquents, the dog might have really attacked...nobody knows for sure and between point A and B the truth lies somewhere in between.
However, no police officer should shoot into a group of unarmed civilians. The same goes for our military, if there's the possibility that a civilian would be shot they are not supposed to try for their target...we all know this doesn't always happen, but it's part of a "righteous shoot" - so if you don't want to get your butt in a sling, don't shoot in the vicinity of civilians unless they are armed.
I have nothing against police officers (my ex husband was one) but there were alternatives here other than using "deadly force"...
Notice the story changed from the dog being hit in the stomach to the dog being hit in the back at "point blank range" and the police said none of the teens were armed...
This story is fishy, we are talking Boston harbor at low-tide fishy. Also it doesn't say what happened after the shots fired, obviously the dog ran off because the police were able to subdue the teens afterwards without being torn apart by the dog...
