Well, for those sitting this out because your dog loves hot dogs too much -- that's kinda the point of training it in the first place.

I do have a question for anyone ~
Is this a trick that is better taught to a dog who already knows a retrieve?

Well, that wasn't anywhere near as impossible as I thought it'd be. One hotdog lasted our entire 10min training session, with just one dent! We still need to perfect her 'form', but I should be able to get a video by tomorrow. :)

Maybe when I get home I'll try it with Kiki too, though she doesn't really retrieve, so we'll see how it goes.

I'm trying this right now... does it count if we use a "Smart Dog"? LOL.

Fozzie, I'm very doubtful of. Very, very doubtful. Very. D= I'll try it just for the extra Corgi points!

Ok, well I learned one thing tonight, my agility dog who will not tug, will tug on a frozen hot dog!! Of course it also doesn't help when my kid and I are cracking up........its not a very effective way to get results for me.......although Petie's results were outstanding from his point of view, 2 hot dogs gone in moments, one fresh the other one frozen :rofl1:

For sure though rats are pretty clever I think theyd be at an advantage as they tend to stash food but sure!

Cool! That means I don't have to fight with my stepmom about it! LOL She hates it when I do anything with her dog.

I haven't started yet, I was thinking about it last night and I'd first have to train Phoebe to pick things up on command then to be sent to do it at a distance then to return, I'd have to teach an entire retrieve before even adding the hot dog. I'll have to see how quickly she learns to pick things up. I'm still teaching her to close the door! hahahahaha

I guess there's no way we could sub, like, a piece of bread if we can't afford to buy the hot dogs, eh? ;) That would probably be an unfair advantage, since most dogs don't like bread like they like hot dogs.

Here chicken, pork and "mystery meat" hotdogs are 79 cents. :p Thats what Oz gets and he loves them. I wouldn't even think about eating them, but he certainly gobbles them up.

Which is great unless you don't have the money to go to the grocery store in the first place. But I'll see if one of the guys can pick some up on their way home from work. I've got $2 to my name that's not already allocated for something else, so I guess I can spend it on hot dogs. :rofl1:

Do we lose points if the hotdog has teeth marks in it:D???

Dodger chomped down a little too hard on the first hot dog and broke it in half...but he redeemed himself by bringing me both halves:rofl1:

Hopefully the goal is not to create a retriever-soft mouth, because Loki is mauling them, too. After a few holds, they've got some nice punctures in them. We went through 3 hot dogs tonight, and only one because she ate it. The others just started falling apart. LOL

This is hilarious! I think I like the stories of progress more than I'll like the videos of the trick! LOL

Oh so not working but for a very different reason than I expected. Pit's initial reaction was to eat the hot dog with vigor, but after I told him to leave it, he will barely touch it anymore! I can't for the life of me get him to put a hot dog in his mouth now; he just pokes it around my room with his nose.

You guys are not going to believe me, but this is Gunnar's FIRST attempt at this trick.... I swear we didn't practice this. I broke out the camera and hot dog and went for it.

Here's the 2nd try. Handler error on this one, I confused him with bring, come, bring, then he seemd to get it better when I just tell him go get the hot dog and bring it here, lol.

Yes he got the hot dog as a reward!

I was thinking about this too! When I don't want Sierra to EAT something, I say leave it. She's REALLY good at leave it. But once told to leave it I don't think I could convince her to put the hot dog in her mouth at ALL!

I'm not even trying this one, but I can't wait to see the videos!
