so how exactly do you get a dog to put a hotdog in their mouth and not eat it? Mine always got them as treats... I'm sure if i ever tried it would be gone in .02589355 seconds.

Do we lose points if the hotdog has teeth marks in it:D???

Dodger chomped down a little too hard on the first hot dog and broke it in half...but he redeemed himself by bringing me both halves:rofl1:
that's kinda cute! I think he should get extra points... that's like bringing 2 hotdogs! lol.:rofl1::rofl1:

you don't have to use a clicker (I find it easier)

I started today. Kaiden did retrieve the hot dog. We practiced holding it first...then went to retrieving. He was so into it that he was VERY grabby about the treats when I was rewarding him. Of course I was using hot dog pieces for rewards.

I'll try it. :) When is the hot dog contest over? I wonder what dog I should train.. Georgia or Oliver would probably be the easiest... maybe Elly. No way in hell would Molly or Bales ever do it.

If I tried this with Reggin, he'd probably get sick and throw up from eating too many hotdogs, before the training session was even over.

Congrats Dan and Gunner:) The contest is still open until August 10th so plenty of time for everyone to still try. Duke and I havent had a chance to practice yet, we've got half an hour free later on that I'm gonna break out the camera and try and get a few short sessions in. I'll post updates, very nervous to see what he will initially do. I think I am going to try and approach it the same way a few people mention, first hone his formal retrieve skills and then try scenting his retireve item with the hot dog and then finally switch the ball or dumbbell with the hot dog.

So to recap 9 more days until the contest closes.

Okay so just to remind everyone this contest officially closes midnight tonight ( regardless of where you are) so just post it before the 11th and it's fair game. Once all of the videos are in I will post the entries in the Fire Hydrant area like we did with the close the door group so that voting can begin.

I unfortunantly did not get much of a chance to work on this one as Duke and I have been preparing 6 other shaping and captured behaviours before our first inclass workshop at the Karen Pryor Academy and I just couldnt find time to squeeze in one more.

Also suggestions for the third trick is now open, I was wondering what you guys though about having a puppy trick and advanced trick going on at the same time so that all skill levels could participate?

Hey Toller 08- um well techinically DanL was the only person to post by the deadline, but i still think you should post your vid so we can see all of the great work you guys did. It doesnt bother me that it was one day late so as long as Dan doesnt mind we can still have an open vote, I will pm him and see.

Either way post your vid as I really wanna see how it turned out- Congrats on completeing it:)

Awesome. I haven't had a chance to read this entire thread yet sorry... for those that were able to successfully teach their dogs to retrieve the hotdog... how did you teach it... what methods did you use? What were things you found frustrating during your earlier training sessions and how did you turn those frustrations around and achieve success? If these have already been answered earlier in the thread I'm sorry... like I said... I'm too darn lazy to skip back a few pages... at least today I am

I can't really give you any tips, Amber as Dance just did it. I didn't really teach her at all. I put her in heel position, threw the hotdog, and then sent her to retrieve it. She sniffed it at first like she was going to eat it, but then I just said "here", and she brought it. That one hotdog lasted our entire "training" session of about 15mins without damage. I rewarded her with pieces of another one at first, and then nothing, as she was just happy that I was happy with her.

I'm rather embaressed to say I have never made a poll before and I am not sure how. I went to the Fire Hydrant to post it, anyone want to enlighten me and then Ill have it up.

Thanks

Nice!

I just found this forum and the first thread I saw was this one! I know my dogs wouldn't be able to resist taking a bite out of the hot dog. Well, I guess I don't really know for sure until I try it, so maybe I'll buy some hot dogs tomorrow and give it a whirl.

Anyhow, loved the videos and am blown away that some of your dogs had such willpower. I'm going to have to be careful spending too much time here because if every thread is as interesting as this one, I can see minutes turning to hours. I'm looking forward to see what other gems you have in here.

Sincerely,

David Squires
