Most have their collars on. The puppies don't. Collars are very handy when trying to break up a terrier fight. (if you twist a collar, you start to cut of the air, when the air starts to get cut off, the dog lets go, dog lets go..things are good) Have only needed that a few times, but man I don't know what I would have done if they were naked :yikes:

Sheesh, when will you learn. A few lashes from your stave will break up any dog fight, and you don't have to get your hands near the fracas.

Mine always wear their collars. We used to usually have them off, except on walks, etc, but one of the dogs got out of the yard through a loose board,,.and she ended up being killed by a car about a mile and a half from our house. (This was in '04). So we keep the dog collars on at all times.

You never know when your dog will get our and lost, and what circumstance will come up.

The only time I do take the collars off, is when we are sleeping at night with my door closed. My dogs don't mind their collars at all, they are very used to them. And I don't mind the sound of dog tags.

I have never had any concerns with their collars. They are very loose fitting, and the dogs could take them off themselves if they wanted to (The slip right off). The collars are only used for identification purposes..I use harnesses for walking, and those are only on during walks.

Only one of my cats has a collar on, and thats cause shes partly blind and deaf..and if she ever managed to get outside..she would NEED to be found by someone! My other cats can't keep those safety collars on..they ALWAYS manage to get them off by just scratching at them.

After Hurricane Katrina, I went out and bought collars and have never taken them off since. I live in earthquake country and there's no telling where I'd be if a quake hit. I want them to be able to return to me, even if I'm not at fault for them getting out.

That said, they walk on harnesses, not on collars. Their collars are either (a) way too loose and easily slipped out of, or (b) a cat collar with quick release. Neither chews or destroys collars.

I just can't risk it. Of course microchips only work if you scan for them. The ID tags say, "I'm microchipped!" which I hope will deter thieves.

This weekend, we brought in a stray dog who had a collar and ID tag. She had escaped from the house blocks away. I was able to call her owner and return her. What a relief -- such a beautiful, good dog.

Collars off when in the house or within the fence. Ronan's gotten his tags caught on a few things before (including on the carpet!) so I prefer to leave them off. If they get out both are tattooed and OC is chipped (Ronan will be soon too).

Always on!!!!
Patches is a door darter and needs a constant handle jsut in case someone comes to the door or you need to move her (doesnt understand the consept of the word move:rolleyes: )
Walker needs a handle for if someone comes to the door if i want to direct him somewhere fast.
Scirrocco have to in the adoption agreement but even if we didnt have that he is a greyhound if he gets out hes gone and he has escaped a few times (gates left open by brother or his friends or opened without our knowledge) and that tag came in handy when they had to call because we cant microchip him since he has almost no body fat ;)
Whisper doesnt but will once we get her rolled leather collar. We dont worry about her because she wont go beyond a few house IF she gets out. We are usually very good about keeping her in. The only time she got loose was because of my brother

and all the Chain collars we have for inside the house have been altered so that they cant choke the dogs they are just there to hold the tags. And none of them go in crates so thats not a issue either.

The family dog Bear wears his collar most all the time. My poodle does not, his hair gets tangled if you look at it wrong, if he wore a collar, even though I am a groomer, you could never get the tangles out.

Strider wears a flat buckle collar and ID all the time, except during baths, brushing, and neck massages (the massages happen throughout the day, every day). He gets walked with a martingale, and that is only on him while he's on leash.

I want to have a means of getting a hold of them no matter what but I don't want their coats worn away by regular collars. So I have several old show chokes (the thin nylon kind) that are too worn out for the ring so I use these around the house. I've never had a problem with them wearing them. Also my kids know the difference between house collars and show collars and get over the top excited at the thought of going to a show.
