Usually OFF in the house, but I sometimes forget.

Usually ON walks, except when swimming and playing in woods.

She dives head first (and I mean LAUNCHES) into bushes and undergrowth (the kind that is spiky and dense and uninviting) and I worry she'll catch it. She also launches herself up trees and all sorts.... I'm suprised she hasn't blinded herself on twigs (oh and her tail has never broken or split... funny that ;) )

my young dogs wear their collars pretty much 24/7. occasionally i take them off overnight. i let harv be naked more because he scratches at his collar and the jingling makes me crazy.

collars on for several reasons:

id purposes- i figure the chances of my knuckleheads escaping is higher than the chances of them getting their mouths stuck (especially since they're never together unattended) and i do NOT want not-owned-looking pit bulls running free. they're all chipped, but not everybody knows about microchips and not everybody's going to be willing to catch a pit bull and take it somewhere to be scanned.

and collars are much easier to grab if they start to get into a scuffle or in trouble with the cats or something else.

For us it's not really a location thing but a time of day thing. They often but not always come off at night. During the day when we're home, when they're coming and going to and from the yard they stay on. Putting their collars on every time they went out and taking them off when they come back in is just a pain. They're never together unattended so the chances of anyone getting stuck are way way less than the chances of one of them escaping the yard.

But at night, to cut down on the jingling, we often remove collars. And sometimes we just take them off anyway, if we're all snuggling and don't want collars getting in the way, and just put them on again later.

I don't need anyone to be any more excited for their walks than they already are thanks! Besides, Conrad has a SENSE-ible harness that I have to put on before we go anyway, so he's got a clear cue that it's walkie time with that.

Collars can be deadly. My dogs wear collars when I am doing something with them, and at no other time.

^^ echoing Red here. My guys dont wear collars unless we are going somewhere. They are microchipped, so no worries there either.

She's always collarless at home! =) We have a fenced yard so if she ever was to get out the front door, it wouldn't be an issue. Besides that shes chipped. :)

Collars are off when they're in the house. They love the sound of them when we do get them out cause that means they get to go somewhere! Everyone is microchipped in the house so in the event that they do get out and someone finds them they can be tracked that way as well. However rule of thumb if we leave the house collars go on!

Which reminds me Tweeder needs new tags. He somehow lost his tags in the woods when we went on vacation over labor day weekend....=-S

I prefer collars on as much as possible as a just in case precaution. I used a safety release collar with Goober in case he manages to get caught on something. He always has a collar on. When I get my pup, it will wear a collar as well with ID information just in case... however, the dog will not be wearing a collar when it's in the crate... I hate referring to a dog as an it... but I don't know if I'm going to get a male or female...

LOL... I thought the same thing. :)

We have "indoor" and "outdoor" collars. Outdoor collars with all the tags, indoor collars with a small ID tag, so no jingles. Collars go off when crated. I don't let Casanova and T-Bone together when I leave, so there is no unsupervised play time anyway.

Actually I put more faith in my confinement and management of my dogs. Having known 4 people PERSONALLY who have lost dogs in collar related accidents, I will take that small risk of my dogs escaping. I have been very lucky in almost 20 years having never had any dog escape for more than a few minutes, and never while I have been on the road.

Bottom line is each person must weigh the risks and benefits of collars, microchips, and etc and make their own decisions.

For me the choking risk is greater than the escape risk, and I will not leave collars on my dogs unless I am working them or have a leash attached to it.

The only company I have heard anything bad about thus far is "Home Again". I have heard they charge annual fees, and that they are slow about getting your pet's info into the system.

My dogs always wear their collars in the house. The only time something happened was when Daisy got her collar caught on a kitchen chair and freaked out. But we don't have those chairs anymore, so that's not a problem.

collar is on 24/7. No particular reason really...Even if he got out, the chances of him going any farther than a block radius is incredibly slim since he is trained very well not to cross streets without permission (and has proved over and over that he won't step into the street even when he thinks no one is watching).

Its more of a convenience thing for us since he has a buckle collar that is annoying to take on and off. Its loose and doesnt bother him at all. Whenever I do take it off, he just keeps going back and sniffing at it...so I am under the impression he likes it better on, lol.

Also, I like the jingling. Lets me know if Oakley is up to no good...haha.

My boys have their collars on as much as possible. They are, basically, never alone... and I've never witnessed either of them grabbing each other's collars.

They have "around the house" collars, which are more comfy, and they usually wear either rolled leather collars (for walks/training) or a harness (dog park) when they go out.

my concern isn't even with the companies. the number of people who walk into the vet clinic where i work who have never heard of microchips is amazing. not to mention, if you find a dog on a sunday afternoon, there's nowhere to have the dog scanned until monday. and it takes a whole lot more effort to take the dog somewhere and have it checked for a chip than it does to just look on a tag and make a phone call.

Wally never wears a collar inside. Teeny does only because she's a pain in the butt and I like to have a "handle." But frankly I DESPISE the sound of dog tags (even with the tag bags on), so I keep them on as little as possible.
